With the close-season transfer market due to open shortly, Juande Ramos, the Tottenham Hotspur head coach, has done little to dampen speculation that Dimitar Berbatov, the Bulgaria striker, will be leaving the club during the summer. Asked if Berbatov had played his last game for Tottenham, Ramos said: “I don’t know, I hope not.”
Berbatov did not feature in Tottenham’s 1-0 win against Reading at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday. He suffered a groin injury in training on Friday and was left out of the squad. Ramos gave no indication whether Berbatov would play in Tottenham’s final match of the season, against Liverpool at White Hart Lane on Sunday.
Tottenham could decide to cash in on Berbatov, who has scored 23 goals this season and who could command a fee of up to £25 million. He has two years left on his contract but Manchester United as well as many of Europe’s leading clubs are believed to be interested in him.
The sale would help to swell the transfer kitty of Ramos, who has already spent £16.5 million on signing Luka Modric, the Croatia midfield player. As a replacement for Berbatov, Tottenham have been linked with David Villa, of Valencia, and Samuel Eto’o, of Barcelona. One player who Ramos will definitely lose is Radek Cerny, the goalkeeper, who announced last night that he will join Queens Park Rangers next season.

What's going on? Mido, Defoe, Berbatov - all top goal scorers leaving the club. How come they are all so unhappy? I agree with Mick, Peterborough, put in an offer for the Paraguayan, Roque Santa Cruz who must be the buy of the decade!!! I am also upset that Cerny is leaving - and for QPR!!!

What a pity there is not much loyalty in football these days, it has become an industry with little player identification with their club. There is a lot happening at Spurs and the buzz is right with Ramos at the helm to attract top class players, but they could attract more if Berbatov stayed!

Totally agree he should not be sold to any of the top four in england... Most of all man utd!!!!!! But then again i dont trust levy and co, All our best have mainly headed utd's way.
On the replacement side of things get santa cruz!!! Benty in the opposite direction.
mick, peterborough, england
It will be a tremendous pity if he goes but it is the way of football today. He is CL quality & will enhance even top teams like Barcelona or Madrid. As for Spurs, well at least we will make money on him & he has helped us to a trophy. I'm not sure you can ask for more really.
Mark Allen, London, UK
Tony's right, there is no current incentive for top strikers to come and join Tottenham. Maybe champions leaguer football in the future, and i'm not expecting it to be soon at all. Need more comitted players like Keano to build Tottenham up and really cement uefa cup places first.
Luke, Peterborough, England
have to sign another top striker, but someone that will grasp the premiership by the neck.
roger, london, uk
I hope he realises that he cannot sell to the top 4... How are you going to break it if all of your best players are always being signed by these clubs?
Don't be silly Mr. Ramos. Sell him to Real or Barca!
Pablo Leite, London, England
Let him go, Bent showed more than enough on Saturday against Reading, he deserves a run in the side. If he still is not doing the business in Jan '09 then sell him too!! Pekhart for the first team and one quaity signing up front and will he be missed, I don't think so!!!
Mark Murphy, Bristol,
Cannot see top players like Eto"o or Villa wanting to join a mediocre club in the middle of the premiership with no champions league football. Why on earth would they?
tony freeman, Tampa, USA
Yes, goodbye ........ he has lost all interest and it's best to take the money and run. I think that others will find that, aside of the wonderful skills, he will only perform if he feels like it. How do you think Alex Ferguson would react to THAT?
Tommy Harmer, East London, UK
