Dimitar Berbatov will complete an acrimonious move from Tottenham Hotspur to Manchester United within days after the Barclays Premier League champions finally reopened formal negotiations over the weekend. United made a second formal bid in the region of £25 million on Saturday and a deal appears imminent after Juande Ramos, the Tottenham head coach, declared that the saga must be resolved.
“It can’t last longer than a week because the transfer window closes next week [on September 1],” Ramos said. “I hope the situation is resolved before then, but there is a deadline.”
The talk of a deadline reflects Ramos’s determination to draw a line under an episode that brought further embarrassment on Saturday when he left Berbatov out of the squad for the 2-1 home defeat by Sunderland on the ground that the Bulgaria forward was psychologically unfit to play.
“After having a meeting he [Berbatov] did not find himself in the right frame of mind to play,” Gustavo Poyet, the Tottenham assistant first-team coach, said. “When the player says to the manager that he does not feel in the right condition to play a full game at this level, you don’t have any option.”
No direct discussions had taken place for several weeks, with the clubs in contact only through intermediaries since an opening £20.5 million bid was rejected by Tottenham last month. United made a second formal bid on Saturday and, although Daniel Levy, the North London club’s executive chairman, had been holding out for a £30 million fee, an agreement is thought to be imminent. Berbatov’s absence from the squad on Saturday may impact on the fee Tottenham receive, given that the club seem to have conceded publicly that he cannot stay at White Hart Lane.
Jonathan Woodgate, the central defender, refused to blame the transfer saga for Tottenham’s poor start to the season and insisted: “A football club is bigger than one player. It’s the manager’s decision and whatever he does, we’ll back him to the hilt. He makes the decision and we’re not going to ask questions. There’s been no disruption to me. He [Berbatov] comes in and does his work but if the manager says he’s not ready, he makes the decision. It goes on in football. Man United have come in with a bid but it’s up to the chairman to do the right thing for the football club.”
Roy Keane, whose Sunderland side inflicted a second successive defeat upon Tottenham, advised Spurs not to capitulate. “You still try to do the right bit of business for the football club,” Keane said. “I don’t mean you should lose money, but you lose the player and try to get the right deal for your club. Trust me, there are not many top strikers out there, so you hold out and, eventually, these big clubs have to pay the money.”
The club came under fire from some supporters on Saturday who question a transfer policy that has left Ramos with one striker, Darren Bent, after the sale of Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe and the sulks of Berbatov. “It’s not my decision,” Ramos said. “It’s the club’s decision.”
Berbatov’s arrival at Old Trafford will delight Sir Alex Ferguson, who has been desperate to sign a top-class forward to compete with Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tévez. Louis Saha will be allowed to leave the club, with AS Roma and AS Monaco having joined Sunderland in expressing an interest, while Ferguson is waiting to hear whether Manucho, the Angola forward, will receive the work permit that he needs to play or the club.

Seems like a short sighted policy with strikers has hit Spurs- there is a real possibility we wil only have one striker until January and thats Bent!!!- Pity all the games in the league arent against teams like we played in pre-season! Will Spurs get into the top 16 of the table now???

the sooner the better! dont get me wrong i have been a big fan of berbatov since he arived at the lane but the sooner he goes the better, we have lost big names before with likes of lineker, sheringham, gascoinge, the one that went to the team in red and white, keane and now what looks like berby!
mark woodhouse, radcliffe, manchester
The jury's still out on Anderson!!! I guess we all we it differently but I had him down as one of the success stories of last season.
David Lawson, Kendal, Great Britain
I'm afraid the Tottenham heirarchy have really shot themselves in the foot. By not addressing this situation sooner they've left themselves with very little room to manouvre. Sell Berbatov to someone else (not Utd) and be done with him.
Duncan, Wokingham,
Anderson will prove to be the one of the best midfielders in the world if he stays at United and stays hungry. An outstanding talent.
nicko, Leatherhead,
despite united winning the premeir league two consective times it has been lacking a natural number nine, and with the arrival of berba at ot i think saf might repeat the perfomance of 1999 now berba will belong to his right family.
beu, mbale, uganda
The jury may be out in New York, old son,but Nani outplayed Ronaldo in the big matches in the Euros and Anderson stepped into two of the biggest boots in football last season, those of Mr Scholes, and did not look out of place. In his first season.Have to agree about a couple others on the list, tho
Chris, Worthing, England
Shaybo, how can you list squad players as 'bad signings'? Not every 1.2m player turns out to a Cantona-esque purchase but they played their part and were worth the cash. You're also dredging up 10 years worth of transfers. Benitez signed that many duds last week!
Turbo, London,
Calling Veron, Forlan and Blomqvist bad signings is simply ridiculous. Veron was one of the world's outstanding midfielders at the time. Bellion on the other hand...
David, London,
I am fed up of these Prima Donas. Berbatov is contracted to Spurs. Last year, he was kissing the badge, now "his heart is not in it".
Players need to be fined for this sort of behaviour and clubs need to get sronger in their actions.
Hamad Lone, London, England
Shaybo- all mangers make bad signings but nearly all of the ones you mentioned didnt cost much apart from veron and we got 18 million back for him, more than the write down value on the company books.
Poborsky,Blomquist, forlan, howard are 4 players that were good players and proved it a other clubs.
david b, stockport, england
Fergy ony sold Forlan because we were playing with a one striker system{Van Nistoroy} Fergy has since said he really wanted to keep him but it was unfair as he wasnt getting the games he needed.
Got the golden boot in spain the year after so he was a very good player.
Howard is good for Everton.
david b, stockport, england
Blomqvist kept Giggs on the bench for much of the 98/99 treble winning season and started the 99 final. In the Euro games he was very good. Unfortuntly he got a bad injury or his time at Utd would have been more prominent.
Veron had been great but mentally lost it as he never wanted to leave Italy.
david b, stockport, england
Anderson is the real deal and will be (If fit) Uniteds main midfielder this year. I think SAF has signed players on the evidence of performances for other clubs, or tournaments... however, some simply cannot step up and play for United. Its too big a stage for some. Berbatov will find his true home.
Nick, Tokelau, South Pacific,
If you are going to pick on bad signings then surely you have to weight it up with the likes of Cantona for 1.2m, Solskjaer for one mill and Peter Schmeichel for 550k?? And anyone who thinks Anderson is not a quality player doesnt know what they are looking at!!
colin james, Dubai, UAE
What is it with Bulgarian players, Petrov at Man City is another sulky player who never seems to smile or looks like he's enjoying life. Are Berbatov or Petrov aware that the Iron curtain and the Berlin wall are gone? and Eastern Europeans are allowed to be happy. Check the bank balance that'll help
Chris, Weston super Mare, England
what do you mean "a bad signing"??? I don't recall any red calling Forlan a bad signing - especially after he stuffed Liverpool. Tim Howard - a bad signing?? His first season was out of this world - unfortunately his Terret's may have prevented him from going on the greater things; Smith? Bad injury
john, bahrain, bahrain
um dont know what you have been watching champ but kleberson, richardson, djemba djemba....just to name a few
tim, chch,
Its all very well after everything is over to stand up and say so and so had been a bad buy. I challenge anyone to to admit that when SAF signed Veron, he or she immediately voiced that JSV would be a failed signing. And did you jump for joy when Yorke was signed?... and how did it turn out?
adrian ng, petaling jaya, malaysia
Sir Alex hasn't made a bad signing!? I can name a dozen. Poborsky, Cruyff, Blomqvist, Taibi, Veron, Forlan, Howard, Bellion, Djemba Djemba, Kleberson, Smith, Miller. That's gotta be 70m quid there alone and the jury's still out on the two very expensive signings from last season, Nani and Anderson.
Shaybo, New York,
In all the years that sir Alex has been in charge of united he has not made a bad signing but i think 25 million is ten million too much but only time will see.I only hope that he can help in the scoring dept and lets get rooney into his proper position.
