Sacking Juande Ramos would be counter-productive, according to Ray Clemence, the former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper.
The under-fire Tottenham manager remains under increasing pressure after yesterday’s 1-0 home defeat by Hull City, a result that leaves the North London side bottom of the Barclays Premier League. But Clemence believes a change of manager would only delay a revival in the club’s fortunes, despite the side’s abysmal start to the season.
"If you look back, the sides that are the most successful are the ones that have continuity and consistency,” Clemence said. "Therefore to keep chopping and changing at the top end every year is counter-productive.
"A new manager with new ideas would want new players and that would take time again.”
The departures of Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane have left Tottenham struggling for goals, and points, but Clemence says the pre-season woes shouldn’t be a reason for the club’s current problems.
“They had the transfer turmoil before the start of the season and that was a slight excuse, but it is no longer an excuse,” he said. "The only way out is to work hard and trust in the players you are alongside because there are some quality players there. Quality will eventually come through. As long as you keep working hard it will turn for you.
Despite Tottenham’s worst start to a season since 1912, Clemence says the situation should be reassessed at the end of the season.
"It hasn't started well this year but Ramos has a tremendous CV and as far as I am concerned he needs time. Give him time.
“At the end of the season you assess again as that's he nature of the game, but at this moment chopping and changing won't do anybody any good."
