Tottenham Hotspur dismissed their Spanish head coach, Juande Ramos, last night, after making their worst start to a league season since before the First World War, and installed the Portsmouth manager, Harry Redknapp in his place.
Spurs will pay the FA Cup holders £5m compensation. There had been speculation that the club would make changes since the defeat by Stoke last Sunday, which kept Spurs adrift at the bottom of the Premier League with only two points from eight games. The club then lost 2-0 against Udinese in the Uefa Cup on Thursday. Spurs have also parted company with Ramos’s assistant Gus Poyet and the sporting director, Damien Comolli.
Redknapp confirmed last night that he had accepted the Spurs offer and would be meeting the players this morning, before the crucial game at home against Bolton.
While it had been expected that either Ramos or Comolli would resign or be forced out, the dismissal of all three men at the top of the coaching hierarchy is a shock. Redknapp confirmed that he was contacted by Spurs on Friday while in Portugal on business.
“It’s a great opportunity for me. I loved my time at Portsmouth. The fans were great and we had fantastic success,” said Redknapp, who brought the South Coast club their first honour in 58 years last season when Portsmouth won the FA Cup, beating Cardiff City 1-0 at Wembley. “I’ve never been happier than I was there but £5m is good compensation.”
"For me it’s a chance to manage a big, big club before I retire. Spurs have got a decent squad on paper but it’s not a well balanced squad. There are skilful players but maybe it’s got a soft centre. Maybe the team need more strength and aggression. You don’t pick up just two points if you’re that good.”
The fall from grace of Ramos was extraordinary. Having succeeded Martin Jol, the most successful Tottenham manager in a quarter of a century, Ramos piloted Tottenham to the Carling Cup, beating Chelsea in the final in February. Results declined abruptly after that and the last straw for Levy appears to have been the team's meek defeat on Thursday versus Udinese.
It is not yet clear whether Levy will replace Comolli, whose dismissal may spell the end of the controversial sporting director position. Redknapp confirmed that Joe Jordan and Tony Adams, his assistants, will remain at Fratton Park and take charge of his former team today. "Portsmouth couldn't do better than hold onto those two and make one of them manager," he said.
Redknapp admitted he would consider signing players from Portsmouth in the transfer window if they became available. “It depends whether the club want to sell them,” he said. “If they did it would be an open market and we would be in there like every other Premier League club would be for one or two of the players.”
His priority will be to avoid relegation. “Having only two points after eight games is really a disastrous start," he said. "I have to try to keep them up. That is the only priority for me. We can talk about trying to win cups and everything else, but we have got to stay in the Premier League. Anything else is a massive bonus.”

Sounds like Levy received a call from Joe Lewis in the Bahamas. Levy is about as misguided and greedy as Ashley at Newcastle.
Martin Jol made Spurs a real threat to the big four but he was "unfashionable" so Levy and his gang rushed around looking for a "Maurinho' Now it's "unfashionable" again

It's high time that David Beckham was put in charge of Pompey. I've just come back from LA and the speculation linking him Pompey is rife. David sees himself as a Roman legionnaire, and shouts "Up Pompei!" when he scores for LA Galaxy Bar. Posh would be happy to take over Harry's beachside house!

I guess Harry was attracted by the prospect of playing against old enemy Southampton next season in the Championship, assuming the Saints don't go down too.

Lunacy at the Lane! Did Ramos, who took half a season to win a trophy in his first season in England, ask to sell Keane and Berbatov?
Now in comes Redknapp, to take over a 'big' club whose ground capacity is of an entirely ordinary club - albeit with a bit of history.
Rather like Portsmouth!
Christopher Wright, Newcastle,
Ramos is no surprise but Redknapp is. Unless it's just about the money it seems smarter business to be manager at a smaller club punching well above its traditional weight than of a bigger club who are in real danger of playing in the Championship next season alongside Newcastle.
Chris Jackson, London,
So Ramos has gone. Poor bloke never had a chance. If you lose two important players just before the season starts then what do you expect. It is the board that should be sacked. Over and over it is proved that "sporting directors" don't work in the premiership. I expect 'Arry made it clear-no way.

Spurs don't tend to give their managers much time. Redknapp has previous for leaving jobs over the last few years. this partnership surely can't last longer than two years. With a view to the future surely Roy Keane, Tony Mowbray or even Martin Ling should have been considered.

So, what are the odds of Defoe & even Campbell returning to the Lane?
This looks like an about turn by the Spurs board, & a return to an "English" style of management. Maybe Spurs should have more UK players in the team - some foreign players don't have passion or appreciation for English clubs.

When you start to side line players it is time to go. However, the players themselves need to up the work rate.
Tim, London, England
I think they should have given him couple of more games. Thats what happened with Martin Jol and look how well he is doing with Hamburg. When going gets tough you are suppose to support your manager. Look at Arsenal or Liverpool.

The one name missing from the list of departures who is ultimately to blame for the current state of affairs at Tottenham is Daniel Levy. He has spent the last 6 years banging on about a director of football working with a coach and has finally abandoned his plan. 6 managers in 6 years. Get out Levy
Jane Sparrow, London,
I love all this talk of Spurs being a big club. What rubbish. Pompey won two league titles and two FA Cups. Play up Pompey.
Greg Davis, Newmarket, England UK
As I understood the position Harry Redknap's record improved immediately after being given sufficient money to buy in good class players. If the same doesn't apply at Tottenham then he's on to a hiding to nothing, apart of course from a good retirement pay-off!
Trevor Dee, Torbay, UK
It was expected. Harry Redknapp now has the tough objective to bring Spurs out of the hole. It is going to be very hard for him, mainly because he should score good results in no time at all.
