Alan Curbishley has resigned as manager of West Ham United. He had been under intense pressure since the summer, with the bookmakers making him favourite to be the first Premier League manager to get the sack. But Curbishley opted to jump rather than be pushed, despite guiding West Ham to fifth in the table after three games with two wins and a defeat.
Kevin Keen has been named as caretaker manager as the club look to appoint their fifth manager in seven years, with Slaven Bilic, the Croatia boss and Harry Redknapp, the former Hammers chief, leading the list of candidates.
A club statement said: “We can confirm that we have accepted Alan Curbishley’s resignation as we feel it is in the best interests of both parties. We wish Alan all the success in the future. A shortlist of candidates is being drawn up and an announcement will be made in due course about the new West Ham United manager.”
Curbishley blamed a "breach of trust and confidence" for his sudden departure from Upton Park.
"I felt I could just not stand by and let what happened [pass], especially at the weekend, so I made a decision," Curbishley told Sky Sports News. "Some managers may not have taken this action, but I could not sit around and be silent on it. I am absolutely gutted I have had to come to this decision."
He added: "The selection of players is critical to the job of the manager and I had an agreement with the club that I alone would determine the composition of the squad.
"However, the club continued to make significant player decisions without involving me. In the end such a breach of trust and confidence meant that I had no option, but to leave."
Curbishley's relationship with the board reached breaking point last night, after the manager stated his dissatisfaction with the club's summer transfer activity at a meeting. Curbishley was unhappy that George McCartney, the left back, was sold to Sunderland on Monday after being assured that no player would leave after Anton Ferdinand's departure.
The former Charlton Athletic manager was annoyed that the club brought in only one experienced outfield player this summer, despite confirmation yesterday of the signing of David Di Michele, a striker, and Herita Ilunga, a left back, on year-long loans. Both deals are subject to registration by the Premier League.
West Ham issued a statement earlier today defending their transfer policy: "The club is fully committed to a high-quality first-team squad based on solid financial foundations that will challenge at the top end of the Premier League and in the cup competitions," it said. "This is mirrored by the efforts being made off the field, with the club not only investing in playing personnel but dedicating significant resources to support staff around the squad and also the new training ground project. These investments will make major contributions to the long-term future of the club."
It continued: "As stated before and during the close-season, our intention was always to hone the size of the playing staff with several key performers returning to fitness and the emergence of homegrown talent. This has now been achieved with seven players sold or released and four recruited. Along with the importance of adding quality new signings with bright futures, a key aim has been to secure important players on long-term contracts.

To me Alan Curbishley was the best manager we have had in years. It seems crazy that he wasn't allowed to do his job as the manager but instead was being constantly undermined by the board. Sure West Ham will move on, I really hope Harry Rednapp gets the job. All the best Alan

Alan has gone and it is a fact of life. No one has died. Love the fans, love the goalie (that penalty save last Saturday was 'ab fab') love the team . Get behind the new manager and we will survive. It would be no surprise to hear Alan had another job lined up, seems to be the vogue.

The lunatics really have taken over the asylum. Let a manager manage, is'nt that what he is there for?I cant think of another business where managers have no or very little say in the type of staff they hire. Its was Alans neck on the block, go well Curbs and thank you for what you did.

West Ham have been a club based on Loyalty but that is a thing of the past.John Lyall a player & great manager,Ron Greenwood ,Alan Pardew was the first to be shown no loyalty.Trevor Brooking stayed with the club when it was relegated. Now its all money & no real home grown talent or ambition.Sad day

I am gutted, here is a Manager who helped us survive relegation, got us a top ten finish last season with a decimated squad and then the best start this season for WHU for a number of years.
What is a Manager to do, to be secure in this business?
Good Luck Mr Curbishley & thank you.
Mark Vick, West Malling , England
Well I suppose this means that they're playing muscial chairs again, when Keegan eventaully leaves Newcastle again he'll be heading straight for West Ham.
Georges Rouillon, Warrington, England
The ambition on the board and the ambition on alan never really matched, dont misunderstand me but curbs was extremely good to keep charlton up at limited resourches but he is not the right man for a club who wanna achieve better things. Good luck mr curbs but it sadness me that you quit.
thor, moss, Norway
followed Hammers for 43 years breaks my heart to see Curbs going. This club will never move forward. They will become a feeder club again
John J, Bracknell, UK
You're a top man Alan, too good for the board at West Ham.
If managers are denied the chance to manage team selection
and transfers what is the point of taking all that hassle from the boards. Amateurs, greedy egomaniacs who know nothing about building teams over time, but just have to meddle!
Barbara, Chelmsford, UK
Another manager succumbs to a meddling chariman and board. I thought he did a great job for us to keep us in the PL and we had a worry free season last year well away from the relegation zone. Great shame to lose you, Alan. All the best.
Andrew Graham, London, UK
I feel sorry for Curbs. I supported him because he is a West Ham man and I feel we should always support our own. Having said that he did always look like he was struggling with the pressure and I think the whole McCartney and Ferdinand Transfer saga was an excuse for him to go.
I wish him luck in the future but I have a feeling this will be the last we see of him in management.
Lewis, London,
Best out of it, mate. The EPL is no place for honest, straight-talking guys who take offence at double-dealing, ignorant bean counters running a club from a calculator and a filofax.
Chris Taylor, Worthing, England
can we have him back at Charlton please?
Philip, Surrey,
Get Sven in now!!!

Come back to Charlton!
