Wolverhampton Wanderers have continued to strengthen their squad in readiness for their return to the Premier League by completing the signing of Andrew Surman from Southampton for a fee believed to be £1.2 million, rising to a possible £2 million based on appearances.

Surman is Mick McCarthy's fourth signing of the summer, following Kevin Doyle, Marcus Hahnemann and Nenad Milijas to Molineux.

The 22-year-old made a total of 146 first team appearances for Southampton, scoring 18 goals, and has signed a three-year contract at Molineux with the option for a further year.

"This is a great move for me and I'm really excited," Surman said. "To come to a Premier League club, and one as big as Wolves, is fantastic. We'd had a disappointing season at Southampton. I think we had enough quality in the team to be able to do something but unfortunately it all went sour and we ended up getting relegated, which is never nice to have on your CV.

"I'm ready to go again with Wolves. Even though it looks a young side here it's also a very experienced side when you consider how many games they have played."

Southampton are in no position to refuse offers for its players. In administration and with players and staff unpaid in June, they have also sold David McGoldrick to Nottingham Forest and are expected to allow Kelvin Davis to join West Ham United on a free transfer.
