Arsenal have finally received some light relief at the end of a turbulent seven days with the news that Jens Lehmann is ready to commit himself to the club. The Germany goalkeeper will confirm his intention to stay in a meeting with Arsène Wenger, the manager, in the next few days and is expected to sign a one-year contract extension by next week.
Lehmann was due to see Wenger for contract talks last week, but the meeting was cancelled after the shock departure of David Dein. The delay gave Lehmann more time to consider his position and he is ready to spurn a late offer from Hertha Berlin to stay at a club that he has served with mixed results for the past four seasons.
Arsenal’s offer of a one-year extension has been on the table for some time, with Lehmann stalling after having his request for a two-year deal rejected. The 37-year-old attracted interest from Seville and Hertha, but has opted to stay at Arsenal because his family are settled in London and he relishes the challenge of playing in the Champions League. Lehmann’s decision represents an important boost for Arsenal at a time of great instability at the club because his departure would have left Wenger without a first-choice goalkeeper.
Manuel Almunia, despite impressing during his appearances in the Carling Cup and FA Cup this season, is seen as little more than a capable deputy, with Wenger hoping to groom Craig Gordon, of Heart of Midlothian, as Lehmann’s long-term replacement. Arsenal are expected to make a bid for the 24-year-old Scotland goalkeeper in the summer.
Lehmann’s retention will also prove popular with Arsenal fans, as he has overcome a difficult start at the club to establish himself as something of a folk hero.
After playing every match as the “Invincibles” went unbeaten in the Barclays Premiership in his first season at the club, Lehmann was dropped in favour of Almunia midway through the next season, but was back to his best last year. Lehmann played a crucial role as Arsenal reached the Champions League final, setting a record of ten successive clean sheets in the competition and establishing a benchmark of 853 minutes without conceding a goal.
Wenger must next appoint a director of football, who will take on the responsibility for transfers and contract negotiations previously handled by Dein. Damien Comolli, the Tottenham Hotspur sporting director, has ruled himself out, but Henri Biancheri, the former AS Monaco sporting director, confirmed yesterday that he wants the job. “It is a post that would please me,” Biancheri, who was at the French club during Wenger’s period there, said.

People are clearly insane... Lehman is brilliant! Technically he is one of the best keepers in the Premiership, despite losing his temper practically every match and winding the opposition up something chronic (which I think most Arsenal fans secretly love!). Apart from Petr Cech, whom we tried to buy first (and missed out upon due to an issue with his work permit in 2003), who's a better keeper in the Premier League?!
I think that we need to hold onto Germany's No.1 for another year to settle down this period of absolute chaos and groom a potential successor for next year.
I have not seen anything of Graig Gordon but any British addition to the first-team squad is a welcomed boost and gives me consolation that Wenger hasn't totally rejected talent from this Island.
Wish list:
1/ Buffon/ Green/ Carson/ Gordon
2/ Davies (to replace Senderos)/ Bale / Richards
3/ Ribery/ Barton/ Reyes (just make him play)/ Wright-Phillips
4/ Eto'o / Owen / Nugent

Potter, we obviously talk to different Arsenal fans. All the ones I know are delighted. He's a class goalkeeper, and while he's been in poor form lately, last season he's the reason we finished fourth instead of fifth and got to the CL final.
Anna, London,
Mad Jens was a hero before the world cup - he's now more erratic as he has nothing to play for and nothing to prove. Ship him out and get Carsson, Pele, Foster or Buffon(!) straight away.
Willinho, London,
Potter is 100% right. Lehmann can't deal with corners, he hits everyplayer on the pitch, gets stupid yellow cards, can't hold on to the ball and frankly I would prefer to have any other goalie at the moment!
Arsenal4life, London,
Don't suppose to speak for all of us, Potter. I for one am pleased that Lehmann is staying for another season, and I know a great number of other Arsenal fans who feel the same. Arsene still needs to bring in another goalkeeper to act as understudy and competition for Lehmann, as next season will certainly be his last and we need someone to be ready to step straight in.
Gauranteed two mistakes per game? What nonsense. Lehmann's form has varied this season and hasn't matched last season's, but he's still a top keeper and Arsenal aren't exactly in the position to be throwing out quality players.
MB, Dublin,
I'm not sure Potter has the authority to speak for all Gooners. As a season ticket holder for 20 years I am very glad "Mad Jens" is staying.
His experience is invaluable, you always know he cares (sometimes too much), and you know that he appreciates the history and the potential of the club.
Everyone that sits near me at the Emirates feels the same.
He is indeed a folk hero.
Unlike Gallas, Jens understands the potential of the youngsters is actually quite patient and encouraging with some of them - Hoyte earlier in the season especially. Hoyte has become a better player for it and hope he plays instead of the theatrical Eboue next season.
Matt, London, UK
Hold your tongue Potter-Jens Lehmann is a SAINT. The finest keeper ever to have graced our fine club. Parallelled only by Cech in the Prem at the minute. You DO NOT speak for all gooners. In fact, in light of your quite frankly outrageous comments, I question whether you are a gooner at all...
James, Dublin,
Absolutely right. Mad Jens must go.
Kevin, London,
Agree with potter's comments. Lehmann is increasingly seen as a liability. After his rash challenge in the CL final, he has been consistently poor. He's now guaranteed at least two mistakes per game, and has cost us dearly this season. If we had Petr Cech and Chelsea had Lehmann, I daresay our fortunes this season would be reversed.
TheDigger, harold wood, essex,
Just how out of touch are you in the assertion that Lehmanns retention will prove popular with the Arsenal fans?. Let me assure you most supporters see him as an accident waiting to happen. If you truly tested opinion before making your blinding statements you would see that most gooners feel the first move in the summer transfer market is a new goalkeeper.
Potter, norfolk, u.k.
