Arsène Wenger launched a spirited defence of his Arsenal players yesterday, after a determined late win over Fulham was blighted by an accusation of persistent diving. Lawrie Sanchez, the Fulham manager, claimed that a lively first half contained “three blatant acts of simulation by Arsenal” that should have resulted in bookings by Phil Dowd, the referee.
His mood was not improved by Arsenal’s equaliser coming from a penalty, after Carlos Bocanegra had bodychecked Kolo Touré.
The accusations were directed at Alexander Hleb and Robin van Persie, but were not helped by television replays that showed a penalty-area challenge on Hleb to be a clear foul by Chris Baird, the Fulham defender, missed by the referee, and the second-half penalty to be entirely justified.
“I was at a meeting with Arsène Wenger and the other Premier League managers on Tuesday, in which Keith Hackett told us that simulation was a nono and offenders would be booked,” Sanchez said. “Then they have three men go down and nothing gets done. It was no surprise to me when the fourth one was given.”
Wenger’s view was equally trenchant. “I disapprove of simulation and I always have,” he said. “Hleb is 100 per cent certain that he should have had a penalty anyway.”

Fulham were dog-tired by the 80th minute, and it showed. Sanchez is trying to defend his troops but he aught to bottle it and move on as he was lucky the foul on Hleb was not called, and the Bicanegra challenge to Toure was as obvious as day following night.
I had a great deal of respect for Sanchez before Sunday, but now he sounds like a whinging manager of a second rate team that can't keep up.
Rob, New York, NY
Arsenal clearly showed who the real winners were. They controlled the time of possession and had more shots on goal. A young group of kids who played with heart and determination.
As far as Sanchez is concerned, he proved that he was child in this case, whining about diving to compensate for his teams lackluster performance. Expect to be very surprised by the Gunners performance this year!

And look at his player falling in the box over his own feet, he wasn't touched by Fabregas but tried to claim a penalty. The one case of diving was by his own player. Hypocrite.
Bernadette, London,
More stupid excuses, don't know how he has the cheek to complain about diving after the Hleb incident.. Sanchez can count himself lucky Lehmann made that howler, that's the only reason Fulham were in the game in t he first place.
James, London,
Any chance of Mr Sanchez apologising, to Mr Dowd & Arsenal, for the fact that he simply got it wrong.
He spent virtually the whole match making diving motions at the 4th official. That in itself is a form of gamesmanship.
Graham, Hitchin,
Sanchez is playing the "underdog" card very badly. His comments around this match have been petulant, brash, ill informed and ill timed. He already looks and sounds like a manager under pressure and fighting for his job.
David M, London, UK
I quite agree that diving should be punished however in this case replays proved that there was no diving, in fact, the ref missed another penalty for the foul on Hleb.
Perhaps Laurie Sanchez should make an appointment for Specsavers as he didn't mention the shirt pulling or the blatant time wasting by his own players - or doesn't that count!
