The intense pressure that comes with being Liverpool’s record signing may have claimed plenty of victims, but Fernando Torres seemed only too happy to raise expectations yesterday, the Spain striker boldly announcing that he could be the man finally to end the club’s long wait for the league title.
Having signed a six-year contract worth £90,000 a week hours after flying in from Madrid, Torres was presented amid much fanfare at Anfield and spoke of his desire to follow in the footsteps of such legendary figures as Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler.
The Times can reveal the full story behind the £20.2 million transfer that eclipses Liverpool’s previous record outlay of £14.2 million for Djibril Cissé, whose No 9 shirt Torres inherits, although the deal is only likely to be the first of several eye-catching signings by Rafael Benítez as the manager seeks to end the club’s 17-year wait for the championship.
Benítez is also in the hunt for a new winger, possibly two, and the indications from Portugal last night were that Ricardo Quaresma, of FC Porto, could fit the bill. Liverpool are said to have had a £13.5 million bid for the 23-year-old Portugal winger turned playmaker rejected, although a slightly improved offer could be enough to persuade the Portuguese club to sell.
Alessandro Mancini, of AS Roma, and Yossi Benayoun, the West Ham United midfield player, are also thought to be targets, while the manager is also hoping to force through a deal for Gabriel Heinze, the Argentina defender, even though Manchester United appear reluctant to sell him to their fiercest rivals.
Yesterday was all about Torres, though, and the 23-year-old forward is adamant that he can succeed where others such as Cissé, Stan Collymore and Fernando Morientes have failed.
“I’m convinced it’s the right decision and hopefully this will be the year where things happen quickly and we win trophies and things turn out well personally for me,” Torres, whose sale sparked demonstrations by angry supporters in Madrid, said.
“I’m aware that the expectations are really high and that people are very keen to see me score lots of goals, but I’m just as keen to fulfil all their hopes and desires and I’m confident that I will have the necessary ammunition. I’m playing in a top side and that gives me the confidence to be positive about the challenge.
“I don’t have any fear of this responsibility and it’s not something that worries me unduly. I know that with hard work you can overcome the pressure and reach your targets reasonably well.
“The fact that they have given me the legendary No 9 shirt that has been worn by so many great players shows they have confidence in me and that brings great responsibility.”
Torres had been linked with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United and was the subject of a firm inquiry from Old Trafford last summer, but he insists that Liverpool was the only club for which he was prepared to leave Madrid.
“It was a great opportunity. It’s true I have had offers in the past, but this is the very first time I’ve asked Atlético to listen to any of those offers,” he said. “This is the first time I have been tempted to leave.
“Liverpool are a massive club and they could literally approach anyone in the world of football, so to approach me was very special.”

Quaresma would be a massive signing, possibly more effective than Torres. Both those in the red shirt would make me very happy. Babel is a great coup too so Rafa is definitely spending those American dollars wisely!
Rich, Chelmsford, England
Torres has not only youth and blistering pace on his side, he also has a maturity that saw him captain Athletico Madrid as a teenager. He is a big game player and will certainly trouble the top sides in the Premiership, where the Reds have struggled to take points last season.
Rafa's plans are to to create more fluid and attacking style of play where goals come from all quarters. Torres fits the bill and with Kuyt into his second year we should expect a greater goal return with the two of them up front.
Add the very exciting prospect of Ricardo Quaresmo joining by the end of this month and these signings really are things to make any Reds fan excited for the coming season.
The Rafalution enigmatically continues.
Riaz Rahman, London,
Sorry, Mark from Mozambique, but Man U tried to sign Torres but he wasn't interested. Liverpool was the only club he wished to exchange Atletico for. Somethings are hard to swallow.
Andrew, Cork,
v got torres.....liverpool r real title contenders nw.....torres s gonna pump in lots dis season...european hopes r also high......dont disappoint plz
titash, kolkata, india
indeed Torres will now make our weekends the best ever. At least one will now attend the weekend festivities in SOWETO with a smile after he scores every saturday with rooney missing sitters at man U. We need one winger now Benitez since we have enough players now.Viva Liverpool Viva.
clement, Johannesburg, South Africa
Atl. Madrid's been trying to sign quaresma since January and a few days ago made a 16£ bid that was rejected by FC Porto.
Besides Quaresma already said that he wants to join a club playng in UEFA and for Silverware... So most likely he will stay anither year and if he leaves it will be for liverpool
Paulo Martins, Braga,
Torres is a strong attacking player and will provide the right blend and balance up front for Liverpool.
Of course,he wont bridge the so-called gap on his own but LFC are slowly getting there for a serious challenge.
As he says,Liverpool are England MOST successful side and the only ones he would consider joining.
Hard to bear for Mark from Mozambique (!) but that's the fact of the matter.

Torres is a good signing, and shows Liverpool`s intent. If the Quaresma report is accurate it will be another significant catch if a fee is agreed. There are some reports that MUFC have captured Tevez, so Liverpool will need the wingers required plus a top class defender. If we can secure these signings then a league challenge will be realistic. The points gap last season paints a slightly false picture as we made sure of qualification for the champions league while trying to protect players for the Milan final. Its looking good
Scouse Paul, Liverpool, England
The Torres signing is a statement of intent. Man Utd & Chelsea fans just don't like the fact that we too can now mix it with them in the transfer market...diddums lads, grow up and worry about your own clubs!
Roy, Liverpool.
P.S. A Jeremy....from the South...surely not! I've lived in the North & the South mate and you're absolutely right...compared to up here the South is made up of boring landscapes and grey people.
Roy Brewer, Liverpool, UK
Liverpool Football Club has a proud history, no one can deny that, but as a Liverpool fan I am tired of harping on about the past. We as a city have alot to be proud of, we as a community have alot to be proud of and as a set of supporters, it is clear we are the best in the world. For years we have had a solid team, now we need an super-team. rafa had a lot to do when he arrived, he had to rebuild the team around the spine of Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerard. Unlike Chel$ki; Man Utd and Liverpool and even Arsenal have had to work for what they have and that makes success all the more enjoyable. Torres is a good signing, if only to keep Rafa happy, now we need wingers! Quaresma looks good, Simao looks Merseyside-bound and it even looks as if Liverpool has once again emerged as the club leading the chase for Daniel Alves. The future's birght, the future's red. YNWA
Thom, Liverpool, UK
I hope he is half as good as Rush or Fowler
N.Riley, Runcorn,
Quaresma is one of the best football players right now.I am from Barcelona and I´d love to see him in a big team,he deserves that and much more. He´s also a great person and I hope he can show how good he is.
MARGARITA, Barcelona, Spain
Mark, Torres chose Liverpool and said NO to Man U! Alex Ferguson has been keen on signing him for a long time but Torres only had one destination in mind - the club with the greatest history the most silverware and Rafa Benitez! Simple as that.
Jason, Dublin, Ireland
Every team that has won the Premier League since it began has always played football with an emphasis on counterattack. Chelsea changed this last season due to 'Drogba Vision' and it was not enough. If Liverpool are going to suceed any time soon then they must open the throttle and play football to the fashion that Manu Utd and Arsenal have done for the past decade.
Whether or not that happens remains to be seen.
Ed Atkinson, Worcester, Worcestershire
I think Torres is an excellent signing for us both on and off the pitch. He is a genuine class act who,at 23, can only improve. I think it may point to a slight change in how Liverpool are going to play next season.
Off the pitch it seems that our American friends are prepared to back Rafa. A few more additions are needed but I feel the work is being done behind the scenes towards this end.
I, for one, am excited about the future.
jason duffy, belfast, Ireland
I am a liverpool fan and would love to see Quaresma here. That's what we need to provide supply to Torres now. And we need a flair player like him.
Responding to people taking Man U names above - ManU definately not gonna get him now after Anderson and Nani. And what does Ronaldo and Quaresma's friendship have anything to do with a move to liverpool? All I've heard, is that the real options to Quaresma right now are Athletico Madrid and Liverpool. And I think all will agree that Liverpool is the better option out of the 2.
Prakash, Delhi, India
quaresma its an amazing player. he is better than cristiano ronaldo
andre, lisboa, portugal
Reap the whirlwind that is coming for you Man U. REAP IT!
Stu, Mighty Red, Glasgow, Scotland
I'm portuguese. I cant see Liverpool signing Quaresma. He's close friends with Ronaldo and if you've ever attended any training sessions with the portuguese team you'd have noticed they are always together. Liverpool, I suppose, has a real appeal to spanish players, but Man U has a real appeal to portuguese players. Besides, I dont want Quaresma to leave :(
Sara, London/Porto,
Quaresma is on e of the best wingers in the world that price tag is an insult...
Celio, lisbon, portugal
khoja, stanmore, middx - a duff statement you have made
morientes was 30 years old and slow.
this guy has bags of natural pace & is only 23 years old and finishes with class rather than out and out and out blasting the ball. he makes intelligent runs behind the defence. i think you liverpool fans have found a young version of mickey owen without the injuries
the total opposite of "the other fernando"
why not call nani the hugo viana of manchester united & anderson will be kleberson whilst we're at making some pointless points
ben, sydney,
Torres will succeed in Liverpool . He is a great player with great skils. Now about Quaresma I hope we see him at Anfied because that's a player - a future big star . The new Cristiano , maybe after some years he might be the best player
Svetoslav, Sofia, Bulgaria
'All the chest puffing, eckie thumping and flat caps". Give us a break, you southern clod, we don't 'eckie thump' or wear flat caps in Liverpool, that's purely for the Mancs, who will likely have 'trubble at mill' next year, despite Tevez. But regardless, at least in the north we will have a champion next year, if not Liverpool, it will be Man U, certainly not one of the southern clods.
Roy, Liverpool, England
Oh Dear A typical sad Manc crying over missing out on Torres!!! who clearly stated that he would only leave Athletic for Liverpool!!! If you read the interviews from the last 24 hours, you will know he is a LIVERPOOL SUPPORTER and has been for many years!!!!!
LFCMightyReds, Lancaster,
Torres did not score enough goals becurse A.Madrid play 4-5-1 and on counter attack .Not mutch time spend in the other teams penalty box. With Liverpool at Anfield that will be diffrent .

Darren I would suggest from your comments that you don't support Man U. You also make emotional comments that would not look out of place in the world of fiction. May I recommend looking at the playing stats from last season - Terry actually played more than Neville, Vidic was out for the same number of games as Cech, Saha ..... do you want me to continue? And the less said about the quoted £100m the better.
Anyway this article is about Liverpool and personally I think it is a strange signing. If he is asked to play the recent Liverpool way I can't see that working. The system will need to change to accomodate his talents and rather than spending energy sapping time defending he will need to do what he does best which is be free to run into the channels. Will he have the energy to do this if he is asked to play the position like Kuyt did last season? I hope Liverpool change their style to suit him because he could be a player even rivals would enjoy watching.
Whitey, Surrey,
Benitez European nouse and the addition of a player of Torres calibre can only serve to put the fear into the Manyou's of this world.
Whereas Liverpool fans crave the title after 17 years, United and Chelsea fans cringe at the ease with which Benitez has paddled his way into to European Cup finals with ease. The trophy they all really want, but only Liverpool seem to win. Let's face it, with a team of underperformers.
The press only had to mention Heinze coming to Anfield and Ferguson's off buyng Tevez. Do United really need Tevez with Rooney and Dive Boy? Odd one that. Did he think Liverpool wanted him? Chelsea?
Hollywood, Boris, Karloff
Torres went to Liverpool because Man Utd wasnt interested in a 17 goals a season striker. If Utd has wanted him, and he was forced to choose, no prizes for guessing his choice.
Mark, Mukamuakaka, Mozambique
It is an understatement to say that Liverpool is a great club .In comparison the likes of Chelsea are minnows .
Liverpool as a club is too great just to be a top four contender. Rafa Benitez is probably the best coach/manager in the world .It is a sacrilege that he has not had enough players of the calibre that will allow him to truly challenge for top trophies both at home and in Europe .
Liverpool fans deserve nothing less.
The new owners of Liverpool now understand what LiverpoolFC is all about . And they are producing the cheque book to achieve Rafa's ambitions for the club .They will not regret their investments .
The arrival of Torres is a landmark in the history of the club.
Jim Bodha, Liverpool, uk
I love this northern superioty thing that goes on, all the chest puffing, eckie thumping & flat caps. Absolutely brilliant!
Its great that you all feel so impassioned, with no class, style or verve about anything. Long may you reign my friends. Leave the wastelands of the south to us poor mortals.
Torres. Number 9. It's a good number for a bus.
Jeremy, Farnham Born, Hovis Bread ,
It's good to see a grate player comming to liverpool but we need 3 more to come soon. we need two very good wingers at list and we can be ready for the premier league. COME ON YOU REDS COSE WE LOVE YOU.
SOKOL, birmingham, england
Have you forgotten about the other fernando?
khoja, stanmore, middx
Some people in the media are already trying to put pressure on the player and manager by suggesting that Torres could be the final piece in the jigsaw.
I find it laughable, as it took Ferguson 4 years and over £100 million of adding top quality, first choice signings to what had been a title winning side to win the league title again. And if we're all honest although they without a doubt played the most entertainnig football last season they had more than their fair share of luck with refereeing decisions at times and even with that luck probably would have been no closer without Chelsea's unfortunate bout of crippling injuries.
The signing of Torres is one of the few times Benitez has been able to get his first choice target, the other two being Reina and Alonso. If he is allowed to bring in three or for more, possibly Quaresma, Tevez and Benayoun Liverpool will have a side that will undoubtedly challenge for the league title for 4 or 5 years to come.
Darren, Manchester,
I was initially very sceptical about this move, especially for the reported £27m, but everything about the deal seems to show real resolve by Rafa and LFC and a real desire by Torres to play for us. Watching him today he handled himself really well and seemed very bright and committed to improving both Liverpool's fortunes and his own skills, if that translates itself to the pitch then I'm sure he'll do really well. Let's just hope it does! Now let's get the wingers and offload the likes of the unfortunate Cisse and the unworthy Bellamy.
