Manchester United supporters were caught up in fierce violence last night inside and out of AS Roma's Olympic Stadium. Eighteen United followers were injured in clashes with Roma’s fanatical “Ultras” outside the ground, local agencies reported, and one was taken to hospital in a serious condition with a knife wound to the neck. However, some of the worst scenes took place inside as the security forces appeared to overreact to the rival groups throwing missiles.

But should the United fans have travelled in the first place, having been warned beforehand that trouble was likely? Was the mayor of Rome right to accuse Manchester United of creating a “negative climate”? Or is there absolutely no excuse for the way the police behaved in trying to restore order? Are United fans getting an unfair reputation following these clashes and the problems they faced in Lens for their Champions League match with Lille in the last round?
