The prospect of a first all English Champions League final moved a step closer last night when Manchester United came from behind to record a memorable victory over AC Milan at an enthralled Old Trafford.
United’s hopes of a meeting with Liverpool or Chelsea in Athens next month were receding before Wayne Rooney struck in the dying seconds — his second goal of the night — to secure a dramatic 3-2 win that ensured the momentum will be with Sir Alex Ferguson’s team when they travel to the San Siro for the second leg of their semi-final a week today.
“Of course you make mistakes in games like that, but we also created some great moments that I’m delighted with and it proves we have got the quality to win this tournament,” the United manager said. “It’s not going to be easy in Milan — and they know it’s not going to be easy for them, either. But I think we have an outstanding chance now.”
United’s makeshift defence imploded inside 15 first-half minutes when Kaká plundered two clinically taken goals as Milan came from behind to lead 2-1, but a Rooney-inspired comeback leaves United as the favourites to progress to the final on May 23. Chelsea take on Liverpool in the first leg of their semi-final at Stamford Bridge this evening.
However, United’s task will be tougher after Patrice Evra, the left back, picked up his second caution of the knockout stages. He will be suspended and with Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand struggling to overcome injuries and Nemanja Vidic definitely out, it means that Ferguson could be without his entire first-choice back four.
Last night’s match was billed as a battle between the world’s two best players, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaká, but while both produced superlative performances — the Portugal winger being credited with United’s first goal even though Dida, the Milan goalkeeper, pushed the ball into his own net — they were ultimately upstaged by Rooney, who restored parity on the hour with a deft finish before his dramatic late intervention.
“The winning goal was an incredible hit,” Ferguson said. “It was a brilliant goal from Wayne. I think on these occasions you need players to get to the heights and we got that.”
Rooney, who took his United tally for the season to 22, said: “We kept going and hopefully that goal will make it that little bit easier when we go to Italy for the away leg. It’s fantastic to come from behind to beat Milan. We knew it was going to be difficult but we kept pushing and it was nice to get the win.”
For the Italians in the crowd, the result evoked memories of Milan’s collapse against Liverpool in the final in Istanbul two years ago when, leading 3-0 at half-time, they conceded three goals in the second half before losing on penalties. “Maybe we were a bit fearful,” Carlo Ancelotti, the Milan coach, said. “We gifted United victory.”

the milan goalkeeper saved the italians , they would have lost 4 /5 2 so we can we carry on the way we play ,the italians we need oxegen masks , they were puffin aftfer 60 min---

ancelotti is a bit harsh on his team, saying they gifted united victory. it would be more accurate to say united gifted milan the lead (with heinze running in treacle for the first goal and running into evra on the second). rooney's winner was just a great early strike. milan did not collapse, even after losing maldini and gattuso. their problem is they don't really have anyone dangerous apart from kaka.
with a little bit of luck, united could have scored a few more. but they will surely score in milan, if fergie lets them. let's hope he doesn't try to be clever. with the defence we are likely to field (thanks to the ridiculous booking of evra), we certainly shouldn't be looking to keep a clean sheet.

The Briish teams have to learn how to go down under
the flimsiest tackles, to roll around as if struck by a
thunderbolt and to be carried of having been given
the last rites, the continental teams especially the
Italian ones have made it into an art and we will
not get the justice until we beat them at this part
of the game, think back to the World Cup who won
it and how,

The forced removal of Maldini and Gattuso allowed United back in to the game and more importantly gave Rooney his impetus to suddenly play to his potential. Should be a cracking return game.

I agree Rooney was fantastic. However in relation to Ronaldo v's Kaka, I believe there was no contest. The Brazilian proved he is the far superior player. When Kaka's team were a goal down he scored twice to give Milan two precious away goals. When United were down, it was Scholes, Giggs and Rooney who came to the rescue - Where was the so called "best player in the world"?

Rooney is a good player, c. ronaldo is a fantastic player, Kakà is from another planet. Milan-MU 2-1

Anyone wishing to know why United are the best team bar none to watch should have their curiosity confirmed by last nights encounter. Thrilling, pulsating and at times devastating football. It wouldn,t be a United game without some calamity in the defence. United are simply incapable of keeping clean sheets and it wouldn,t have made any difference if the first choice defence was there. But even if United don,t make the final or win the competition I can live with that. Theres only one team in the land that can produce football of such quality and passion and their name isn,t Chelsea.

Was there ever a night in the history of football? The two best teams in the World at their best.It was a celebration of all that is good in football. A feast of Soccer and I ate my fill.Well done United. Well done AC Milan. And to lovers of good football, see you next week in Milan. I can't wait.

I warn the United fans:dont be so sure...It is very difficoult to prevail in San Siro on AC Milan and Ancellotti has a very strong team.... Italian teams and Italian football are technically very challenging, some of the players, like Gattuso, Maldini, Pirlo, Gilardino are world champions, they deserve respect .
giorgio marini, rome , italy
3-2 is a bad result, going to milan. all the italians need to do is score just one goal and it is goodbye mu.
and with no first team back four with him, ferguson must surely not look too far ahead...

Maybe Sir Alex thinks its going to be a 100% final between two English teams. Milan are superior than Utd. Man Utd's defence is awful. There's only one Kaka on the planet. And he's a Milan player.

Ironically, the return to fitness by Dida actually costed Milan place in the final. True it was an exciting game to watch in terms of the attacking play and the number of goals scored but they do not conceal the fact that the defence of both sides were shaky. I think Man Utd should go through but if they are to win it, the likes of Rio, Vidic and G Neville must return to full fitness by May 23rd.

One of the best matches I have had the pleasure of watching for some while, the second half in particular was a real treat, also the respect that both sides showed the other and the good spirited nature of the game was an example to all.

I don't know if you can say Milan 'gifted' United victory, but after having the game by the scruff of the neck in the first 50 minutes, they did play deeper. The last 35-40 minutes were all United and they could have felt that they missed a golden opportunity to balance the tie (Milan have two away goals) had they not scored that third goal to win the game.
Aditya Banerjee, Boston, MA, USA
I think Sir Alex understandably gets a bit carried away. Let's face it, Milan's weakest link is their goaltender who indeed gifted United the victory by bungling the first and third goal. It's hard to fathom how Milan could have been so successful over the years with such a goalkeeper. Kaka outplayed Ronaldo, but there is always Rooney.

Rooney is the best, he's clinical and both goals shows he's on par or better than Kaka. MU have the strength to go thru in San Siro.
Tze, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
I think tonight proves that Kaka is a better player than Ronaldo.
