Real Madrid are expected to press ahead with plans to sign Gabriel Heinze, the Manchester United defender, after Fenerbahçe announced yesterday that Roberto Carlos will join them in the summer. The Spanish club are thought to have identified Heinze as a replacement for the 34-year-old former Brazil full back, who has agreed to move to Turkey once his contract at the Bernabéu expires at the end of the season.
Barcelona, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, from whom United bought Heinze for £6.9 million in June 2004, are also understood to be in the hunt for the Argentina defender, who could buy out the remaining two years of his contract at Old Trafford after coming to accept that he no longer figures prominently in Sir Alex Ferguson’s plans.
Heinze, 29, has fallen below Patrice Evra in the pecking order at left back and, after some poor displays for United last season, most notably in the Champions League semi-final, second leg away to AC Milan when his lack of pace was brutally exposed, Ferguson has resolved to sell him.
Real may decide to move quickly to beat off the competition, but Heinze appears to be in no rush to leave and has said that he will not make a decision on his future until after the Copa America finishes in Venezuela on July 15.
United will be entitled to about £6 million in compensation if Heinze chooses to invoke a clause in Fifa’s new transfer regulations allowing him to buy out his contract, although he would not be able to join another club in England if he did so. Under the Fifa law, a contract ceases to be “protected” after a period of three years if the player was under 28 when he signed.
A player could then “buy out” the contract, provided that 15 days’ notice is given and that a compensation fee – in effect the value of the remaining contract – is paid to the club owning his registration.
The only known precedent involves Andy Webster, the Scotland defender, who was given permission by Fifa to leave Heart of Midlothian for Wigan Athletic last September, although, given the ensuing difficulties of that transfer, other clubs and players may be put off going down the same route.
For Real, Heinze would constitute a significant change from the pace and dynamism of Roberto Carlos, who claimed that he rejected offers from England and Italy to join Fenerbahçe after more than a decade in Madrid, during which time he has won three Champions League titles, three Spanish championships and three Spanish Super Cups.
The fact that Fenerbahçe are managed by Zico, a fellow Brazilian, is understood to have swayed the decision of Roberto Carlos, who has been linked with a move away from the Bernabéu almost every summer for the past three years. The left back, who has played only fleetingly for Real this season because of injury, as they chase a 30th Spanish league title, hinted that he would like to return to the country to coach.

Its hard to tell . Heinze has had some legendry games for united and has shown great passion to the game. I agree he didnt have the greatest season though we all know this is down to fitness . i think it would be a regret to sir Alex if he were to let Heinze go as we need the depth in our squad especially as we seen last season the problems that occured laterly in devence. Plus as much as i rate Evra i dont find him a fitting replacement.
stephen lauchlan, Ayr,
Heinze is nowhere near the player he was,United will sell ,because it makes financial sense and I think the player wants to go.
steve berry, Manchester, Lancs
Unless we are signing a quality left-back, selling Heinze is simply stupid. Yes, he has been below-par this season but he was recovering from a serious injury and a full pre-season should see him back to his best. He deserves at least another season at OT. Its not all the club's fault, Heinze needs to show the same fight he did after coming back from the Olympics and sealing a place in the first-team.
Rezwan, Manchester,
Right from his arrival, he said that Argentina was his priority, and showed this with the risk he took to play in the world cup. This is unacceptable for a United player, and if his heart is not in it he should go.
lenny harper, Ayr, UK,
Class player - he's not fully fit yet and that's why he's not back to his best. Heinze is a gritty, steel defender - we need both he and Evra. They play different styles and can be rotated based on the formation going forward. There are times when I would NOT want Evra bombing down the wing and exposing us to the likes of Robben or Kaka. In those cases Heinze is a great option. He is as class as ever - just not fully recovered. The summer off will do him wonders - I really hope he stays!!!
John F. Lynch, New York and Dublin, USA
Hasn't been the same player since his injury. But we will miss him if he goes.
Anj Chelvaraj, Egham,
Nicolas I am Argentinian and I have to say you have no clue what are you talking about it. Heinze is coming fron an injure that he was rush to recover for the world cup, I firmly believe he will do much better this year when his confidence grow after the copa America. No football player that is proffesional and take care of himself will be finish that early, he still have three or four good years.
Marcelo, Stewarton, UK
Heinze was fully committed to the cause and a fan's favourite at OT but he was all aggression no finesse and has not been the same since hisknee injury. Going forward he is pretty limited, so this really will be a break from the past for Real, if indeed he does go there
George, lONDON,
Heinze understand the game very well, but he is just too slow recently
Andres, london, UK
Man United should keep him.
Osca, Florida, USA
Heinze has lost pace and no longer world class, but still much better than Patrice Evra.
He has no positional sence and very poor distribution.
Having missed out on Gareth Bale left back is now uniteds big problem position.
bernard kelly, manchester, england
Heinze is the best defender manchester have and also the best in the world. I think that ferguson has to think twice before saying taht he won`t have heinze in his plans, so pleas heinze don`t leave manchester the real fans love you!
John, London, England
Heinze had a serious injury that left him out of the field for a long time but he is still the great player he once was, he only needs more games to recover his high level.
Nano, Manchester,
It might not be as reliable as it used to, but he is still way better than Evra... waaay better.
Nicolas, Eugene,
Heinze is no longer the solid, reliable defender he once was. As an Argentinian, I think he should be dropped from the national squad. Gabriel Milito has been a lot more consistent over the last couple of years.
