Celtic have lost out to Blackburn Rovers in the race to sign Maceo Rigters, the NAC Breda striker. The Dutch Under21 forward had looked set for a move to the Scottish champions after they were given permission to open talks with the 23-year-old.
However, Rigters’ agent said that the player – who had also been linked with Rangers – had signed a four-year deal with the English Premiership club for an undisclosed fee. Rigters scored four goals during Holland’s winning run in last month's European Under21 Championship, including the spectacular overhead kick in the last minute against England that led to Holland securing an epic penalty shoot-out victory.
John Williams, the Blackburn chairman, said: “We have been following him for some time after Mark Hughes identified him as a player he would be interested in.”
Inverness Caledonian Thistle have agreed terms with Dean McDonald, the Gillingham striker. The 21-year-old is expected to sign today after undergoing a medical.
Graeme Bennett, the Inverness director of football, said: “Dean has accepted terms and we’ve sorted things out with Gillingham. We anticipate the paperwork being completed in time for Dean to be our player on Tuesday. If so, he’ll start training immediately with the squad.”
McDonald scored six goals in 30 appearances for Gillingham last season and had a year left on his contract. He joined the Coca-Cola League One side a year ago from Ipswich Town, where he made 14 appearances.
The former Arsenal trainee also had a loan spell at Hartlepool while at Portman Road.
Two Austrian league players will arrive at the Clydesdale Bank Premier League club today. Dominique Taboga, a 24-year-old centre half, and Benedict Bauer, a 20-year-old striker, will have a week’s trial with the Highland club.

stop banging on about your champions league exploits , you lost against Milan and never looked like winning , you beat United at home , so what? they got to the semi's and you failed yet again to even get to the QF's even though you have had plenty of years practice.
Face facts , you play in a 'diddy' country with a 'diddy' league to use your parlance and until you actually start producing quality young players you and the other lot are finished on the european stage.
Hope this helps.....
Chris , Manchester,
Blackburn a little club made big because of all the TV money in England when the bubble bursts watch you go like Leeds and dont forget was men against kids when we beat you 2-0 at Ewood Park. Would take us 2 years to get used to your League then with the money and class of players we would attract, teams like Blackburn will be in the Chamionship.
Stevie, Glasgow, Scotland
Not being funny but who are celtic?? the premier league is far better than the SPL. ur just sour coz he turned u down HAHA!
Natalie, Blackburn,
Not the player to get us to the last 8 of the Champions league...Might be the player to get Blackburn into the top half next season. haha Blackburn are terrible
Michael, London,
sour grapes .......look at your squad and our squad without your green and white glasses and there's no doubting the difference in quality. Yes you beat us in the uefa cup a few years back but i remamber you had henrik larsson then and some other decent players , apart from nakamura you are woefully lacking in attacking talent , you'd kill for the likes of Benni McCarthy and Gamst Pedersen. I see your 'legend' Lennon is turning out in league 1 next season.....
Chris, Manchester,
The lad never got the chance to make a choice because Celtic never made an offer. They registered their interest with Breda but that's as far as it went because ultimately Strachan wouldn't sanction it. For proof of this all the journalist had to do was pick up the 'phone to Breda.
As for who's the better club, not that again. Celtic are a far bigger and better club and Blackburn play in a far bigger and better league.
Michael, Glasgow, Scotland
the reason that Celtic are not welcome in England is due to the fact that we are a world class football club. With quite literally millions of supporters worldwide. A relatively low income in relation to the EPL. But still capable of beating you lot.... Man U, Liverpool and Blackburn in recent European excursions. Can you imagine what we would be like with big bucks. Eat your heart out 60,000 real fans most weeks. You lot can only dream about it.

There is no doubt Ritgers looks at this moment a good prospect for Blackburn as they try to climb up the English Premier league... They have done well under Mark Hughes... On the other hand, Celtic FC are a worldclass brand and command a massive following worldwide (approx 100,000 fans in Seville) and have in recent years look to be on the ascendancy in Europe again under the new management. Any unbiased football fan can see by Celtic FC display over the two legs against AC Milan in the Champions League they were unlucky not to pull off another great result against Italian opposition. It was only a few years ago that Celtic knocked out English Premiership opposition in Europe, that being Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers.
Dom , Cape Town, South Africa
mark, the EPL must be truly huge quality,if a team that would, according to you, only finish just above the relegation places at BEST can beat man u, benfica, copenhagen and push AC MILAN all the way in the last 16 of the champions league. how far would blackburn get to in the champions league? infact when was the last time they were in it?
Martin, Glasgow,
Mark in Blackburn shows the usual ignorance in talking about Scottish football. Celtic were knocked out of the Champions league in extra time by eventual winners Milan.
In Scotland there are only three teams with a real chance of winning the league, about the same as the Premier in England.
And as for pub leagues, it wasn't us who only yesterday had final confirmation of who was actually relegated, five weeks after the league finished.
mark, Edinburgh,

Mark from Blackburn Rigters Didn't knock back Celtic as Celtic had not placed a bid with NAC Brada for him. Secondly in the last few years we have beating Liverpool over two legs, would have beaten Man U over two legs in the Champions League group stage, oh and beat a wee team called Blackburn 3-0 on aggragate did some one say men against bhoys! Not to bad for a pub team. Oh I we also have 50000 season ticket holders & have not had to slash or prices to get 20000 gates one thinks you support the pub team.
Hail Hail
Martin Logan, PERTH,
we took blackburn apart 4 years ago. we would take them apart now. they are a nothing team. best players in the world 'week in week out'......utter nonsense. stop believing skys marketing machine, the EPL is not only incredibly overrated but extremely uncompetitive.
blackburn have never and will never come anywhere close to being in celtic's class
dave, melbourne, Oz
There is no doubt that the Premiership is a much more attractive league than the SPL and I agree that Rigters made the right choice. However, if Celtic were in the Premiership they would be a class above Blackburn with the freedom to spend higher wages and hence improve their squad. They are a huge club with a huge fan base and unlike Blackburn they would compete for trophies and give their loyal supporters something to sing about. Mark, do you remember the Uefa Cup a few years ago? That "Pub League" team sent you tumbling out of Europe... Hail Hail!!!!
Caolan, Belfast, Ireland
I do remember Celtic beating Blackburn 2:0 at Ewood Park in the UEFA Cup in 2003. Celtic also got to the last 16 of the CL last year losing out to the eventual winners, AC Milan, in extra time. What have Blackburn ever won. 1 League title? 10th last year in their league, no real prospect of European football never mind CL action.
Martin, London, UK
Celtic would at best finish just above the relegation places in the Premier League - to say they are a better team than Blackburn is nonsense. Rigters obviously chose to test himself against some of the best players in the world week in week out rather than take the easy option of playing in a pub league.
Mark, Blackburn, Lancashire
It's ranger & Celtic who are both after the confused Ritgers until He chooses some diddy team in the EPL for big wages & then the headline reads only "CELTIC miss out on WONDERKID" .... LMAO .... Sad, sad, sad ....
It was Drenthe who I was keen on who played out on the left wing & set Ritgers up for His Goals .... Without Drenthe Ritgers won't look half as good .... If We'd been in for Drenthe & lost Him then I Would be upset,
We were linked with Koyte 4/5 years ago & didn't go in for Him, I've only recovered from that when He went to Liverpool & looked past His best, just the way Rafa likes them up front .... DUH !!!!
HAIL !!!! HAIL !!!!
CHAMPIONEES !!!! CHAMPIONEES !!!!
Jim Kerr, Strathclyde, North Lanarkshire
he turned down a great oppurtunity to sign for a team like celtic they are a better team than blackburn rovers and are guarenteed european football each year he has made a bad choice that he may end up regretten.
