Artur Boruc, the Celtic goalkeeper, has stunned the Parkhead club by revealing he wants to leave in the summer.
“Celtic want more than £10 million for me but that is too much,” Boruc said. “There is much to look forward to with the Champions League and then the European Championships but things can change and I have to see what is best for me.”
Boruc is waiting to see the outcome of the Andy Webster case to see if he has precedent to leave Celtic a year before his contract expires in 2009. Webster, the on-loan Rangers defender, left Heart of Midlothian a year before his contract expired to join Wigan Athletic after becoming the first player to use Article 17 of Fifa’s transfer regulations, which enables players to cancel their contract after an established ‘protected period.’ For players under 28, such as Boruc, the period is three years of their contract.
When Webster invoked Article 17, in May 2006, Hearts appealed his move south, and Fifa ruled Webster had breached his contract without just cause and ordered him to pay £625,000 to Hearts, which Wigan had agreed to pay. This was the value of the final year of his contract. Hearts appealed, claiming they should receive more than £4 million, his perceived transfer value at the time the dispute arose. All parties are awaiting a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and if the ruling is in Webster’s favour, it could set a precedent for Boruc to escape his contract.
Boruc, the Poland international, is currently injured after undergoing minor knee surgery but he aims to return for the Old Firm derby on January 2. “The operation went very well and I should be back next month,” he added. “I cannot say for certain that I will be back for the game against Rangers but I will try really hard to be back because I really enjoy these games.”
Meanwhile, Gordon Strachan, the Celtic manager, believes a winter break could benefit the standard of Scottish football. The Glasgow side face their sixth game in 18 days against Falkirk tonight and with an increasing injury list including Boruc, Shunsuke Nakamura, the winger and Lee Naylor, the left back, Strachan thinks a short break would benefit both the fans and the players.
“Sometimes players can get jaded mentally as well as physically with the number of games played. It would give time for players to get over injuries and niggles, and it would be good for if you have new players coming to the club in January to give them time to bed in. And for that, I think people would see a better quality of football from February onwards.”

If this is based on Artur's recent interview in a Polish paper then it's an absolutely disgraceful corruption of what he did say. He was very clear that when he does leave he wants it to be on good terms with Celtic. He did not say that he was waiting for the Webster ruling. I notice that no-one is taking responsibility for this "stunning exclusive". Whatever happened to journalism?
C MacKenzie, Glasgow,
get a proper translation of this sory and you will find something completely different,Im sorry but this is a non story already been dealt with by peter lawell weeks ago when it first surfaced
stephen, johnstone, scotland
put this story to rest peter lawell has said on the bbc website this story is all mince and tatties, and has been dealt with before, more credence should be given to daniel cousins comments on rfc and there infamous dietary habits,ie i quote all we eat are pizzas and big macs, though imay add all in the best interests of scottish football ,and nothing to do with Aberdeens request to have there game against motherwell posponed, for there upcoming game against Copenhagen refused
Seems to me there are some teams in the spl who can have there coca colas and cakes to eat and others who cant
stephen, johnstone, scotland
read this article and went ,not again ,if you get a proper translation of this story you will find something totally different.it has already been dealt with by peter lawell and nothing has changed, since his remarks weeks ago on this subject.Though daniel cousins comments on rfc dietary regime are more truthful and more credence should be given to tha
t stor
y,than the Artur boruc wants away mince and tatties
Poor reporting by the times here,if the journalist had waited to get a proper translation of the interview ,he would have found a completely different story, but in his haste with his "scoop" he missed the true and real story of the day ,was the spl refusal to allow aberdeens match against motherwell to be postponed ,with ther upcoming match against fc copenhagen
Though is to be expected as along with rangers fc player daniel cousins comments on his teams dietary habits ie chips pizzas ,and coca cola, all for the benifeit of scottish football I hear
stephen, johnstone, scotland
This is a transcript of Artur Boruc's interview to a Polish newspaper this week:.Where does it say I want to leave ?
Journo: â Do you want to move to a great club?
Artur: âCeltic is a great club.â
Journo: âAn even greater one?â
Artur: âI know there are bigger teams in Europe, but we are in the top 16 again this season. I have said before I would like to move on from Scotland eventually, I want to continue to develop and meet new challenges.
Journo: âWill you move next season?â
Artur: âI have been speaking to Celtic about renewing my contract for eight weeks now. The current deal expires in 2009, but Celtic have an option to extend it to 2010. When we part I would like it to be on good terms.â
Journo: âIt has been reported that you could use the Webster law to leave early?â
Artur: âFifa ruled that after three years at a club, a player over 28 can leave, with the fee set by Fifa. The Webster law is possible, but that would be a last resort, I expect us to come to an agreement .
Mr Forrest, gLASGOW,
