Alan Hutton yesterday adamantly repeated that he would not be leaving Rangers, despite a renewed effort by both the Ibrox club and Tottenham Hotspur to conclude a deal for the player.
Tottenham have come back in with an increased offer for Hutton, with wages believed to be around £28,000 a week, but the London club were last night said to be losing their patience with the player and were ready to abandon the deal.
In an increasingly messy business, Hutton is understood to have changed his agent as the wrangling has gone on. But the full-back was believed to have reinforced to Rangers that, for personal and family reasons, he did not want to go to London. Hutton’s partner is due to give birth to their second child in three months’ time.
The saga has become highly complicated for Rangers, whose chairman, Sir David Murray, is known to want the transfer to be concluded. Hutton has been told by Rangers that a significant financial windfall will be his if he agrees to move to White Hart Lane.
Agents working on behalf of Tottenham confirmed last night that the London club had gone back to Hutton with an increased offer in personal terms, but that the club was now ready to finally abandon their attempts to lure the defender south.
