What a feat by Rangers. Just one season ago, the proud Scottish club were on their knees, lagging 15 points behind Celtic on the domestic front and in dire need of restoration under Walter Smith. Yet here they are in the Uefa Cup final, having reconstructed the Ibrox defence they used to call “the Iron Curtain” to hold off Fiorentina over 120 minutes and penalties in Florence last night.
This is no time for picking over the Rangers style of play — let the art critics do that later — as they continue their attempt to lift a remarkable four trophies this season. For Smith and his players it is an heroic effort, and maybe not before time. As a club, Rangers view themselves among the European elite and 36 years was too long to have waited before reaching another European final, after their Cup Winners’ Cup success of 1972.
Three nights ago, Smith watched his old friend, Sir Alex Ferguson, take Manchester United to the Champions League final in Moscow. On May 14, Smith will lead Rangers out at the City of Manchester Stadium into their own final against Zenit St Petersburg, coached by Dick Advocaat, the former Rangers manager. Today, those sons of Glasgow — Smith and Ferguson — will be clapping each other on the back.
The game went through a gruelling 120 goalless minutes before Rangers won 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out, in part thanks to a marvellous save by Neil Alexander from Fabio Liverani. Christian Vieri, who had spent half the night missing chances for Fiorentina, blasted one of his team’s spot-kicks over before Nacho Novo sealed victory.
“To be honest, I thought European finals were well in the past for me,” Smith, the Rangers manager, said. “But when you think of the short space of time we’ve had to lift the spirit and determination of this team, that’s what makes tonight so fantastic. We knew we would come under a lot of pressure here but we handled it extremely well.”
Rangers’ success was marred by Daniel Cousin’s sending-off after 109 minutes, when he was shown a second yellow card for going head to head with Liverani. It was not a head-butt as such, although Cousin was reckless and will miss the final as a result. “He has paid a price, though thankfully it didn’t cost the team,” Smith said.
David Weir and Carlos Cuéllar were heroic at the heart of the Rangers defence, while the range of passing and sheer energy of Barry Ferguson were something to behold. So what an irony that it was Ferguson, the captain, who allowed Sébastien Frey to save his opening penalty.
Rangers played much composed football. With Kevin Thomson back beside Ferguson, they stamped their authority in the middle of the pitch. The pair swept the ball about sweetly for Rangers, who enjoyed passages of possession without threatening to hurt their opponents. In the cat-and-mouse after a goalless first leg, this is how it was to be for Smith’s side.
But it became entirely predictable after the break — Rangers came under siege. Wave upon wave of Fiorentina attacks poured towards Alexander’s goal and the Scottish team began to rock on their heels. From Adrian Mutu’s lovely run and cross, Giampaolo Pazzini fired over from eight yards and then Mutu struck a free kick that fizzed feet wide of Alexander’s right post.
Rangers came under assault and when Weir fouled Pazzini and was booked for his efforts, Mutu’s subsequent free kick was blocked — just — by Alexander as Pazzini closed in on him.
Vieri, who replaced Pazzini and had already missed twice, charged through to shoot wide and then Novo came close for Rangers. It was a night of brinkmanship for Rangers that was to end in unlikely glory.

I agree with Pierre.
Rangers did not deserve to be there but Fiorentina.
I am amazed on how people only care about the results and don't think football should also be stylish and not scoring on penalties after defending 2 games..

Bonjour Pierre
Have your grapes gone sour, because another year passed that isn't a vintage one. What would make it better for you Pierre, French football to be adored and admired once more or maybe the second best option would be for a French team to win something (or at least get to a final).
Albert, Newcastle, England
There's a lot of sour grapes on here.
Anti-Football won for Man Utd when they had 38% possession and only got a goal from Zambrotta's mistake. Anti-Football won last night for Rangers. Clue: It means not losing.
Mike, Dubai,
why so much negativity about rangers tactics? we (rangers and scotland) have to play to our strengths - thats life. for too many years we have been totally naieve when it comes to playing the game and as a result have seen our european and international teams fail. walter smith has delivered
michael jackson, glasgow, uk
Let's be honest!
Fiorentina attacked for 120minutes last night without any luck. They were the better team by far!
Rangers played the worst football in this Uefa especially in the two Fiorentina games.
They should be embarassed of their non-style football and feel very lucky.

Spiers - a fan with a typewriter indeed!
Lou, Columbia , Missouri
Thomas Campbell, Leicester, UK: 1 goal in 300 minutes... but they scored twice (2nd half) in Lisbon... methinks you be wrong.
I say well done, they played defensively, yes, but Italy and Switzerland both play international football like that. Good for Scottish football as a whole.
Graeme, Edinburgh,
hi guys i m Fiorentina fan and i m so down after the match but i have respect 4 glasgow fans .have a good time in Manchester final.
alberto, florence, italy
Come on, Graeme, it was woeful. Barcelona, home and away, Lyon at home excepted, Rangers have yet to play opposition who show anything like a cutting edge and seem unable to adapt their tactics to overcome a pretty obvious strategy. Like Celtic in 03 a little goes a long way in the UEFA cup.
Gerry, West Kilbride, Scotland
Well done Rangers!
To the purists - Advocaats team of a few years ago was far more aesthetically pleasing and technically gifted yet they never came close to a European final.
So stop moaning and give three cheers for Whittaker, Cuellar and the class of 2008!
David, Glasgow,
Has anyone noted that we have two English clubs in Moscow, while a Russian side has to come over to Manchester to face a Scottish one?
Makes you kind of wish UEFA could have seen that one coming - and, with all due respect to Rangers fans, switched the venues for the finals.
Joon Kee Neoh, Georgetown, Malaysia

people spreading...
their smug and 'witty' comments

martin, london, uk
Brilliant result. A year ago would anyone have predicted that Rangers would beat Sporting and Fiorentina on their own grounds on the route to the UEFA Final? Reading the comments from the bitter and twisted just makes it better.
Craig , Liverpool, UK
The first two comments from the "New world" are amazing one group only understands the oval ball. The other well his national game takes 4 hours to complete & sometimes the adverts are a godsend! As a Rangers supporter I am proud of the achievements from Walter and his team. Roll on Manchester!
Graham Johnston, Glasgow,
We did ride our luck but the standard of defending from Weir and Cuellar was enough to see us through. Nearly fainted with disbelief when Novo put in the winning penalty.
And on a sadder note, how far has Christian Vieri fallen? What a player he used to be, he's lost it completely.
Elliot, Edinburgh,
Rangers: as advertised - 120 minutes of "anti-football" followed by penalties. This sort of totally negative football, with spades of luck thrown in, works in Cup football, but drives fans away. We'll see the same in the final unless the Russians score. Rangers have scored ONE GOAL in 300 minutes!
Thomas Campbell, Leicester, UK
Oooooh the pressure from Celtic means Rangers are cracking.
Yes cracking into a very large smile.
Cracking into laughter.
Cracking game by Rangers
Scott, London,
I'm a season ticket holder at Arsenal and have always seen Smith and McCoist as decent people, for different reasons. McCoist because of the whole chirpy thing and Smith because he appears fair and without deceipt, unlike a lot of managers.I might be wrong, but I think they deserve rewards like this.

Basically Rangers did not play for 2 whole games + 30 minutes of extra time and still went through. They did this in Scotland several times this year. It proves to be an effective strategy, but makes for horrible, boring, unimaginative football on their part. Watching them is like watching paint dry
Max, NY, USA
John, or Carol or Ann,
Rangers did show ambition; They set out to get to the FINAL!
Now that's ambition!
PS Refer to dictionary re: Ambition.
David Gillespie, Cambuslang, UK
graham speirs getting carried away!! rangers showed no ambition what so ever
john carolan, paisley,
Penalties are a lottery but still, any side that can beat the Italians on their soil has to be credited. To endure the inferno and come away with a victory took guts, resilience and plain old Scottish heart. Well done!
