Peter Fröjdfeldt will return to the North West for the Uefa Cup final only a month after the referee was involved in a controversial decision at Anfield.
The Swede, who will take charge of Rangers against Zenit St Petersburg, infuriated Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, with his decision to award Liverpool a penalty when Ryan Babel tumbled in the box after tangling with Kolo Touré. Arsenal had held the advantage with the score 2-2 in the Champions League quarter-final, second leg, but after Steven Gerrard converted the penalty, the home team secured a 4-2 victory to go through 5-3 on aggregate. “The game was over — it was down to a dodgy decision,” Wenger said.
Fröjdfeldt will be assisted by Stefan Wittberg and Henrik Andrén, his compatriots, in the final. The trio have also been selected as match officials for the European Championship next month in Austria and Switzerland. Martin Ingvarsson, also a Swede, will be the fourth official.
Fröjdfeldt, 44, made his debut in the Champions League in September 2003 and took charge of Arsenal’s first leg against Juventus in the Champions League quarter-final two years ago, when he sent off two players from the Serie A team.
He also officiated when England failed to qualify for Euro 2008 by losing 3-2 to Croatia at Wembley in November and will be at the tournament this summer. He was awarded a Fifa badge in 2001 to allow him to officiate in international matches and has since taken charge of six World Cup qualifying games.
Fröjdfeldt, a married father of two, is a keen golfer and works as an arena manager. After coming through the ranks in Sweden, he began to take charge of top-flight matches by the late 1990s and has since refereed in more than 200 matches in the Allsvenskan, the highest league in Sweden.
He officiated at the Scandinavian Royal League final in April 2006, in which FC Copenhagen defeated Lilleström SK 1-0.
