Neil Alexander
The continuing injuries to Allan McGregor ensured that it was the former Ipswich Town goalkeeper who started and he did not seem overwhelmed by the magnitude of the occasion in the early stages and did well to parry a blistering half-volley from Aleksandr Anyukov. One rush of blood to the head almost cost him when he charged out, but Papac cleared Andrei Arshavin’s shot. 6
Kirk Broadfoot
The right back has performed admirably since Alan Hutton departed for Tottenham Hotspur in January, but he was fortunate not to concede a penalty on the cusp of half-time when he appeared to handle Arshavin’s cross. He was a little reluctant to venture forward when Davis in front of him could have done with the help. That said, he took to his defensive tasks with rigour and relish. 6
David Weir
The defender may well have considered his decision to leave Everton in favour of Rangers a wise one. While the Barclays Premier League club crashed out of the Uefa Cup in the round of 16, Rangers have surpassed all expectations and Weir seemed determined to make the most of the occasion. Zenit’s forwards got little change out of a defender who belied his years. 7
Carlos Cuellar
The Spaniard was not prepared to let his excellent form this season count for nothing on the biggest stage and stood tall. Fatih Tekke, a previous target for several clubs in England, can be a handful, but Cuéllar looked composed. Suffered a clash of heads with Igor Denisov in the first half, but while the Zenit player rolled around in agony, Cuéllar walked away as if made of steel. 7
Sasa Papac
On the handful of occasions he did stray forward his delivery deserted him, notably when fluffing one cross high into the stands. He demonstrated a little more composure in the tackle, despite having his work cut out by Arshavin whenever the Zenit playmaker ventured across to the left. Grew in stature as the game went on. Great clearance off the line from Arshavin. 6
Brahim Hemdani
While the occasion may have been a new experience for his team-mates, the Frenchman was a losing finalist with Marseilles in the 2004 final, when they were comprehensively beaten by a Valencia team managed by Rafael Benítez. Zenit enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in midfield, but Hemdani broke up play where he could and was assured when on the ball. 6
