Heart of Midlothian are bracing themselves for the loss of yet another prized asset after Wolverhampton Wanderers made a £1.5 million bid for Christophe Berra. The club captain and new Scotland defender is poised to follow Craig Gordon, Roman Bednar and Paul Hartley out of the Tynecastle door and the only thing left to debate is the final price.
Vladimir Romanov, the majority shareholder, is reported to have put a value of £2 million on Berra’s head. The success in collecting £2.5 million from West Bromwich Albion for Bednar last week – after the former Hearts striker’s successful season-long loan at The Hawthorns - will only enhance the reputation and status of the calibre of players Hearts can offer.
Gary Mackay, Berra’s agent, is to seek immediate talks with Hearts on his client’s future after Wolves made their offer for a player who came through the club’s youth system before making his debut in 2003 at the age of 18. Berra, who is contracted at Tynecastle until 2011, assumed the centre-back role following the acrimonious departures of Steven Pressley and Andy Webster – to Celtic and Wigan Athletic - and then took over from Gordon as club captain when the Scotland goalkeeper was sold to Sunderland last August for £9 million.
Mackay, who is a former Hearts player, feels it is time for Berra to move to England. The 23-year-old made his Scotland debut last Friday in the friendly match with the Czech Republic in Prague, when he appeared briefly as a substitute at the end of the 3-1 defeat. Wolves’ £1.5 million offer was rejected at the weekend. “Christophe, like every other player, wants to further his career,” Mackay said. “Wolves are a very big club who missed out on the Championship play-offs in England narrowly. Their interest in Christophe shows their intentions to mount a serious challenge for promotion next season.
“Christophe has progressed this year in difficult circumstances. He’s just made an international debut, so people like George Burley and Mick McCarthy [the Wolves manager] are aware of his development. I will speak to Hearts over the next 24 to 48 hours about the situation but I already know Christophe’s thoughts on the matter.”
The Hearts supporters are unlikely to view Berra’s potential sale in a positive light. The Edinburgh club’s debts have soared to over £36 million under Romanov’s tenure and selling players has now become the norm. Even Andruis Velicka, the top scorer, was sold to Viking Stavanger of Norway in March for just over £700,000.
Berra would not be the only player leaving Edinburgh for the Coca-Cola Championship. Coventry City have signed Guillaume Beuzelin, the French midfield player, on a free transfer from Hibernian. The 29-year-old, who was out of contract this summer, has penned a two-year deal at the Ricoh Arena.
