The man who gave Gordon Strachan his worst moment in football is eager to become the new manager of Heart of Midlothian. Vladimir Weiss, the coach of Artmedia Bratislava, revealed yesterday that he is to hold further talks at the weekend with the Edinburgh club about their vacancy.
The 43-year-old Slovakian shot to fame in 2005 when he inflicted a 5-0 rout of Celtic in a Champions League qualifying tie in Strachan's first game in charge of the Glasgow club. Now Weiss is keen to renew hostilities with the Celtic manager in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.
Weiss guided Artmedia to a league and cup double last season and is high on Hearts' list of candidates, along with Gudjorn Thordarson, the former Iceland and Stoke City manager. “It would be an honour to manage Hearts,” Weiss said. “I'm very interested as the Scottish league would be a step up from the Slovakian league.”
The former Czechoslovakia international is in his second spell as manager of Artmedia. He cashed in on his rising stock in 2005-06 after leading Artmedia into the Champions League, where they also faced Rangers, and moved to Russia, where he spent a year with FC Saturn.
Artmedia have admitted that they are aware of Hearts' interest. “We've already had some talks with them, but nothing is finalised yet,” Petr Kaspar, the general manager, said.
However, despite reports claiming that Thordarson would be unveiled as Hearts manager today, IA Akranes of Iceland, the club that employs the 52-year-old, insist there has been no approach. Toddy Gudjonsson, the chief executive, who is also Thordarson's son, said: “We heard about this in the winter, but we have not heard anything since and there hasn't been an approach at all. He [Thordarson] was not in Edinburgh yesterday, he was playing golf, and this morning he's also at the golf course.”
Hearts have said they are looking for a British manager, and while Weiss clearly has no such experience, it is thought that Terry Butcher, the Scotland assistant manager and former Motherwell manager, could be employed as his assistant.
Thordarson does have experience of British football, after spells in charge of Stoke, Barnsley and Notts County, who he left in 2006. He was Iceland manager from 1997 to 1999 and was set to become caretaker manager of Hibernian in 2004 but changed his mind and the job later went to Tony Mowbray.
Livingston have confirmed the appointment of Roberto Landi as their new manager after the Italian signed a two-year contract with the club, who were taken over by an Italian consortium led by Angelo Massone earlier this month. The former goalkeeper has managed clubs in Hungary and Romania and will be assisted by David Hay, the former Celtic and Livingston manager.
