Rangers are likely to face FBK Kaunas, the Lithuanian club closely associated with Hearts, in the second round of qualifying for the Champions League.
Kaunas were handed a favourable draw in the first qualifying round, after being paired with Santa Coloma, the Andorran side. The winners will play Walter Smith's side in a two-legged second-round tie, with the matches to be played on July 29-30 and August 5-6.
Kaunas are sponsored by Ukio Bankas, the bank owned by Hearts majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov, and players from the Lithuanian side have been regularly sent to play in Scotland. Andrius Velicka, who will join Rangers from Norwegian side Viking later this month, moved from Kaunas to Hearts in 2006.
Rangers need to win two qualifying rounds to reach the group stages, which will include Celtic, the Scottish champions. Rangers lost to Zenit St Petersburg in the final of last season's Uefa Cup.
Fenerbahce, who reached the quarter-finals last year, were drawn against the Hungarian champions, MTK. The Turkish club should have Spain's Euro 2008-winning coach Luis Aragones in charge when the teams meet in the second qualifying round in four weeks.
A total of 42 clubs from across Europe were included in the draw for the first two qualifying rounds.
The first round includes a meeting between Dinamo Tbilisi of Georgia and NSI Runavik of the Faroe Islands, with the winner facing Panathinaikos.
The final will be staged at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on May 27, 2009.
Meanwhile, Manchester City have a trip to the Faroe Islands in the first qualifying round of the Uefa Cup.
Six potential British and Irish opponents were bypassed in the draw this afternoon, with City paired against EB/Streymur. While the tie itself should prove no problem for Mark Hughes, City's new manager, with the first leg away he has little time to prepare for the trip on July 17.
