Rangers have proved that they can cope with the pressure of playing catch-up to Celtic in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League, according to Kenny Miller. The Scotland striker scored twice on Sunday as the Ibrox club ran out comfortable 3-0 winners away to Hibernian a day after their Old Firm rivals beat Aberdeen to edge above them in the table.
Rangers face the same scenario this weekend, with Celtic playing Hamilton Academical on Saturday before Miller and company travel to play St Mirren on Sunday. “I suppose there's always a wee bit of pressure on you when teams go above you the day before and you're playing on the Sunday,” Miller told Rangers World. “To go right back to the top after being knocked off shows the character of this team.”
Miller is still looking for his first goal at Ibrox since his return to Scotland from Derby County but he is not bothered where he scores as long as he nets enough to keep him in the first team. “I don't care where they come. I'd take 50 goals away from home!” he said. “Obviously, the manager has had a few different partnerships over the first seven games of the season. I just want to stay in the team and hopefully the goals come.”
Miller has been delighted with Rangers' near-perfect start to the domestic season, a draw at Aberdeen being their only blip so far. Even that would have been a victory but for an errant offside flag. “The domestic season, we've had a really good start to it,” Miller said. “Barring an offside goal and a controversial decision, we'd be sitting on maximum points.”
Despite challenging on four fronts last season, Rangers did not exactly win rave reviews for the brand of football on show at Ibrox. The summer acquisitions of Pedro Mendes and Steven Davis have witnessed a switch to a more attractive style of play and Miller was full of praise for the midfield duo.
“Having lads like Pedro and Davey in the middle of the park, who can and settle a game down pick a pass and control a game, it always helps,” said Miller, who also urged fans not to ignore the contribution of Kevin Thomson to Rangers' recent run of form, said. “You keep forgetting about Thom when you talk about Pedro and boys like Davey, but we've got a fantastic midfield who can basically control the game for us.”
Meanwhile, Rangers have joined the likes of Arsenal, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in signing a long-term sponsorship agreement with Ebel, the Swiss watch brand. As part of the deal, the firm will produce a limited edition watch featuring a Rangers insignia. (PA)
