Andy Driver, the Heart of Midlothian winger, said on Tuesday that he had still not made up his mind about whether to commit his international future to Scotland or England.
Driver, who was born in England and spent his childhood in Oldham, has already played for England at Under-21 level, but has become the subject of much debate since the SFA recently adopted a new rule about non-Scots being eligible to play for Scotland if they have lived and been educated in the country for at least five years.
Driver was 10 when he left Oldham and moved to North Berwick, where he went to secondary school and was snapped up by Hearts after showing promise as a 14-year-old.
George Burley, the Scotland manager, has been keen to call up the winger, but Driver insisted yesterday that he has other priorities to get right first.
“You don’t want to drag it on — if you drag it on, it makes it look as if I’m stalling, which shows disrespect to both nations,” Driver said. “But I feel it would have been a lot easier if I hadn’t my form to concentrate on. Over the next few weeks I’ll be concentrating on that and then, hopefully, the decision will be made.
“It’s a massive decision to make. But the way everyone’s been coming across and talking to me, it’s as if I would automatically get into the squad. I feel that if I come out and say I want to get in the squad, it makes me look arrogant and come across as arrogant, so I don’t want to rush into it.”
Driver said that his recent dip in form had put all thoughts of international football out of his head for the meantime.
“I’m not delaying the decision because I’m not sure about it,” the Hearts winger said. “It’s just the fact that I want to get feeling good about myself playing football and then I’ll settle down. It is something I eventually will have to address. But at the moment, for me, I’m not going to get into the squad anyway, so there’s no point in coming out and making the decision.
“I want to think long and hard about it and if I do make the decision to play for Scotland, I will do it 100 per cent; I won’t go into it half way.”
Asked if he felt Scottish, Driver said: “I’ve been here since I was 10 years old. All my friends are Scottish, my girlfriend’s Scottish, I was educated here, I’ve worked all my life here. I’ve been here more than half my life, so, yes, it’s a major part of my life.”
