Lewis Hamilton dedicated his first Formula One victory to his father, Anthony, last night as the young Briton celebrated an immaculate performance in a dramatic Canadian Grand Prix, which included an horrific crash for the Polish driver, Robert Kubica.
Starting from pole position for the first time, Hamilton drove what Ron Dennis, his team principal at McLaren Mer-cedes, described as an “impeccable” race on a day when the safety car was deployed four times and Kubica was among ten drivers out of 22 starters who did not finish.
As crowds have become accustomed to seeing in these early races of Hamilton’s record-breaking career, the 22-year-old – who leads the drivers’ championship by eight points from Fernando Alonso, his teammate – drove with speed and precision, barely putting a wheel out of place in 70 wreckage-strewn laps.
Speaking after stepping on to the top step of the podium for the first of what is likely to be many times, an emotional Hamilton said: “I have to dedicate this one to my dad because without him this all wouldn’t be possible.” The rising star also made a point of expressing his concern for Kubica, but could not hide his elation at a victory he had been expecting for some time.
“It’s a fantastic day,” he said. “This is history – to come here for my first time in Canada and win. It’s been a fantastic season already. I’ve had six podiums and I’ve been waiting for quite some time for this win. It was just a matter of when and where. The team gave me the best car. I had no problems during the race at all. The safety cars made it a bit boring at some points, but as soon as we got going it was exciting again.”
By the final laps, with Alonso a distant seventh after a calamitous afternoon for the world champion, who went off four times, Hamilton was able to turn the revs down on his McLaren MP4-22 and savour the moment before a full house in the sunshine.
“During the last laps I was just counting them down,” he said. “I am the type of guy who usually pushes right to the end, but it’s a tricky circuit and you can go on the marbles [broken rubber] and you are in the wall, so I quietened down towards the end and just enjoyed it.”
The sages in the paddock are finding it difficult to find new ways of describing Hamilton’s extraordinary debut season. “This was the best result ever, for him and for Formula One,” Niki Lauda, the former world champion, told The Times.“I’ve never seen a guy driving such a perfect way. If he continues like this he will be champion. We all expected him, with no experience, to make mistakes under pressure, but he doesn’t do any mistakes.”
Sir Frank Williams, who saw his own driver, Alex Wurz, finish a distant third, said: “He is absolutely a brilliant driver. You could almost describe him as a phenomenon given that he is achieving so much with no Formula One experience. He is very, very remarkable.”

Lewis Hamilton is doing pretty much everything right behind the wheel of one of the two best cars in F1, he is very lucky to be in that position but has certainly grasped the opportunity with both hands. Even the great Ayrton Senna had to do an apprenticeship via a season with a smaller constructor i.e.Toleman. Out of the car it is hard to determine whether Hamilton is displaying arrogance or confidence; only time, increased competition and his results under pressure will tell the true story of his ability.
Alan, Oswestry, UK/Shropshire
Actually, Jim Clark from the Scottish Borders, I would rate Jim Clark as a marvellously humble champion - one of nature's gentlemen.
We should also appreciate that humble does not require an absence of pride, rather, absence of pridefulness.
Richard Adams, Canberra, Australia
I agree with you Tony from London if Alonso could have kept his car on the track (which just happens to be the same car Hamilton was driving) he might have stood a chance.
And as for Alsono winning his first race in a Renault I know a German driver who recently retired who won 2 Championsships in a Renault.
Gordon, Caerphilly, Wales, UK
Marina from Spain - when was "humble" ever a requirement for a F1 champion?
Can you name a humble champion from the last 50 years...............didn't think so..
Jim Clark, Scottish Borders,
You can say what you want, but nowadays Alonso is the best driver in F1. And it is important to say that he did not started with such a good car like McLaren Mercedes is, he started with a Minardi . And remember that when he won his first race he was driving a Renault, and there were better cars that year, such as Ferrari, Mercedes or BMW. I completely trust in Fernando, he will show what he can do
Sergio Edesa, Valladolid, Spain
Funny how the only negative comments about Hamilton are coming from Spain !!! Remind me, what nationality is Alonso !!
Tony, London,
There is no doubt that Hamilton is a phenomenon. However I worry that the last thing the sport needs after 15 years of one man dominating the sport is the prospect of another man dominating the sport for an equally long period. As the ruling body fumbles around for ways to make the sport more interesting i.e. night races and new street races, the prospect of on man being head and shoulders better than the rest is not good. Hamiltons novelty will soon pass and I fear that what he might achieve in the sport will do more damage than good.
giuseppe, london,
Alonso is the best and he will demonstrating it. Alonso forever!!!!!
ALONSO DE BEST
hamilton is a BOY WITH LUCK but he is not the best
bea, madrid, spain
Spanish press and fans should give up. Now they trying to say that Hamilton is cocky, the same guys who say Alonso is humble...
The fact is that Alonso is getting schoolled by a rookie. Go get your title King Hamilton!
Jose Costa, Lisboa, Portugal
ALONSO CHAMPION 2007 F1, Hamilton didn't drive under pressure yet, I want to see when he'll has a car with same conditions behind him. Alonso prepares the cars and Ham take advantage of this. Without Alonso in mcLaren Hamiltos would be another Button...
John Brown, London, UK
Anyone who can put a smile on Ron Dennis's face on a regular basis has something special about them and it seems Ron Dennis can pick a winner from an early age.. There is no doubt Alonso is a great driver but the rest of the season and the next couple of seasons will confirm if Hamilton is also a really great driver but based on the season so far if he can keep it up he has the makings of another Michael Schumacher or Juan Manual Fango..
Ronnie Ince, Stone, Staffordshire
Alonso fans - get a life. We've got two of the best drivers around competing in the most entertaining championship for ages. If a driver can't be upset when he is ordered not to compete, what can he be upset at? He is human. The shoe will be on the other foot soon enough when Alonso will be asked not to fight against Hamilton for exactly the same reason, and I guarantee he will be no happier about it. As for "looking forward" to when he fails... you've got a long wait, sunshine.
Chris Taylor, worthing, england
Hamilton has a lot lucky because he has arrived at the formula one in the best team. If he drives a car of HONDA or Red Bull, he would never win.
Joss, London, England
There is no doubt that Alonso is a great driver and that he will get better in the new car. Lets also acknowledge that Nando's presence at McClaren is helping the team develop the car. Now lets acknowledge that LH has done something extraordinary. It does not diminish Alonso to acknowledge LH, who it must also be said, will learn volumes from being Alonso's team mate. Just look at Massa after learning from Micheal! We are in for a great season with 4 great drivers on two great teams!
Go LH! Well Done!
dave, Portland, USA/Oregon
I think lewis is a greate driver may be the best.
If at the end of the season alonso is the champ.
this make alonso much better
loro, Caracas, Venezuela
Congratulations to Lewis! Fantastic! All the real F1 fans must be happy. We need this kind of competition between Alonso and Hamilton from now 'til the end.
A message to the Spanish: recognize the new talent, he's a great driver, do you remember his GP2 season?
A message to the British: respect the fully demonstrate Alonso's class. He has won 2 championships against Schumi.
And then, let them play and let's enjoy it!
Alvaro, Madrid, Spain
I'm impresed about the results, really : Ferrari looked like Honda, and Alonso going off three times (or more). Congratulations to Hamilton, he's doing a great job... But let me say as a Alonso's fan, that the season it's too long and bad luck is going to affect everyone (included Lewis).
Carlos, Madrid, Spain
Mr. Hamilton is very lucky, he is where he is about to to belong to an English equipment, that won thanks to the work of Fernando Alonso. We don't forget where was McLaren Mer-cedes the last year. And we don't forget what Lewis doesn't risk anything, or perhaps, does he not know? I believe that only he is dedicated to maintain a fantastic rate, but nothing else .
Pedro J., Madrid, España
Yes. of course Hamilton is History of formula 1... It´s the first time that a Team makes a "factory-driver", and It´s the first time that the beginning of a rookie is in a wonderful car like is the MP4-22, and not in minor teams like Minardi...
By the way... the MP4-22 was not so wonderful before this last winter, when Alonso began to make changes on it...
PS.- It´s enough about Anthony Hamilton... who the hell is he to give opinions about team strategy?... He is like the garlic.. always present in every sauce!
Javier, MADRID, SPAIN
Alonso The best.
Hamilton is a jealous and moaner
Miguel, León, spain
I thought it extremely lucky that Alonso didn't take out Hamilton at the very start. I couldn't believe it when he went off and drove across the front of Hamilton. I had to watch it in slomo a few times. With a team mate like that .....
Alonso was pushing way too hard and made a mistake. He showed no concern for anyone else when rejoining the track and cutting across the other vehicles. Pushing to the degree he did is making him look desperate. Alonso is World Champion and deserves it, lets hope he doesnt get any more reckless in the future in his attempts to retain his title in the face of Hamiltons magnificent driving.
bph, Manchester, England
¿¿Alonso limitations under pressure??
Which limitations??
Remember that Alonso has won 2 world championship,Fighting with drivers called Michael Schumacher,Kimi Raikkonen etc
The british press is doing a war from this and the only enemy is Ferrari, Fernando did a lot of effort to be in the formula one starting with minardi and wining races with 3 years old without helping from formula one teams like red bull (rookies) or mclaren,Hamilton and mclaren has a relation since he was running in karts and that is an advantage supporting Lewis with material and money for run.
In conclusion Lewis is a great driver with a lot of talent,English press cannot say that things of Fernando
I want to resume this with one word RESPECT
Remember that Alonso its in one of the best team of Formula one WHY??Because is the best driver in the grid
A.M, Zaragoza, Spain
You can see the podium: totally irregular. It could resume the canadian GP.
What would have happened if the safety car had damaged Hamilton's position?. Remember that to the future and reform your actuation after Monaco GP. The british press would be more moderate, think that we are talking about persons who play with his lives on sundays. Don't push Lewis too much. He is young and without experience in F1.
Now we can think that Alonso had stopped before Hamilton (it was programed). And we can think that the team give him the worsts tyres. And ...
But we say: Congratulations for this first victory lucky boy.
The best notice... Kubica is ok.
Manuel Alvarez, Cádiz, Spain
next he'll show him how to be a real champion.
Peter Martin, Maidstone, UK
to be a real champion? Alonso won 2 world championships against Michael Schumacher!!! Oh my god...
Alonso had a bad race, but everybodt forget the two problems with the safety car in his two pit stops.
If Alonso would have gone to pit stop first and Hamilton would have gone second(with the sc and the stop&go problems) , what do you think about that? Team orders like Monaco? Today i haven´t read comments about this subject...
Guillaume, Dax,
Enough carping about a great win. So the Spaniards say Alonso was scheduled to come in before Hamilton but McLaren changed it during the race, er, ... so Hamilton outqualified Alonso with a car carrying MORE fuel? I can live with that - well done Mr. Hamilton.
Hamilton is leading by 19 seconds, the only driver who appears able to live with him is Heidfeld and Heidfeld has just pitted. You can get Hamilton in without risk of winding up behind Heidfeld on a track where the SC is always a possibility. What on earth do you expect McLaren to do? Of course they got Lewis Hamilton in immediately, that was racing tactically to get a McLaren win. How far back was Alonso by then, in what place?
Just like Ron Dennis always says, his ideal result is a McLaren 1-2 but he doesn't care which way round ...
E Burgess, Slough, UK,
Not all Spanish people are like the ones who write here. They are just the new F1 viewers, who came with Alonso and the fanatism of Spanish TV and radio (this fanatism is not because of Alonso), and do not yet understand how F1 works. But the real F1 fans from several years in Galicia(State of Spain) and I think that in all Spain, appreciate the work of Hamilton and are expectant to watch a such amazing fight between two big riders.
Andrés, Vigo, Galicia/Spain
Ha ha ha. Brilliant driver, sponsor's dream, Alonso's worst nightmare.
Marina - when was "humble" ever a requirement for a F1 champion. Can you name a humble champion from the last 50 years................................didn't think so.
Jim Clark, Scottish Borders,
Hope the UK coverage was better than we in the US were given. FOX went to commercial every 6 laps and played montages when coming back to the rare green flag portions of the race. Between that and previews of the new House...I was ready to move back to the UK and put up with James Allen. No hang on...I've gone too far there...
Dan Ibrahim, Germantown Hills, IL
Alonso fans - c'mon - be honest and not bitter. Give credit where credit is due. Alonso has also had good fortune in the past as well. Hamilton and Heidfeld drove excellent races.
Johnny Sutherland, Limburgerhof, Germany

Well done Lewis, I watch this young man Kart racing he alway been this good. He going to get better, he also very good when it's raining.
I remember watching him when he was kart racing the rain was pouring down and Lewis just love it even more.
As for him having a good car Fischella had a championship car in 05-06 but he was nowhere near Alonso or leading the championship like Lewis is currently doing.
Ron Dennis, have never put a Rookie in one of his cars. Ron Dennis is no fool he wouldn't let lose a nobody rookie into his car either.
Lewis GP2 team are they wining? No. As for the Spainish, contributing on this blog. Please let us Brit enjoy our win. Didn't your countryman win the French open? Hopefully, Lewis can win the WCD. Didn't Alonso, Win two times?
The Spainish supporter are everywhere, on every blog in Great Britain. What is this the spainish inquisition??
Britain want a winner to, come on Andy Murray and Lewis Hamliton.
Pauline Green, York, Britain

Face facts, Global F1 fans- LH is something special that comes along once every generation, the last pure talent was Ayrton, Lewis is the new. Another great 'yellow helmet' in a Mclaren. The fact remains is that LH most likely would have won Monaco if Dennis had let out the leash. This is a drive that is a physical 'force' in this sport, victories being but an eventuality. The situation in Monaco was a clear example of future dominance to come. LH will probably go down as one of F1 best and thoroughly prepared drives, with a linear progression of experience and success in EVERY class he has entered. Not from NASCAR, not from IRC, but from RC's, to karts and up thru the line of formulas in order. His abilities, smoothness and racing lines expose deficiencies in the 'average' driver, they must all work harder now, Alonso included.
H Duffy, Brooklyn, NY
Well, I think we all should remember Lewis has just won one race...mainly the british newspapers. Lewis is a very good pilot, with a great future, but he still has to win a world champ. Til that, he should demostrate respect for the rest of pilots, mainly Alonso, the current number 1.
Good luck for all pilots!
Markus, Ny, Ny

What happened in the Canadian Grand Prix should be a lesson to Lewis. Pulling him into the pit lane before his time was due proved a wise strategy, the same strategy that he dismissed as favoring Alonso during the Monaco Grand Prix. By the way Alonso also had some more laps to do when he was called to the pit lane. Hamilton is talented, no doubt about that, yet immature. He needs to keep his feet on the ground. I am sure he can win the title but he shouldn't let his mouth run away with him.
Oscar, Madrid, Spain
Reference 'achalk, Plano, TX' 's comment. Sorry, no truth in your rumour that Raikonnen will leave Ferrari 'by mutual agreement' in the near future to be relaced by Michael Schumacher.
Reason - Michael Schumacher has retired.
End of story.
Simon Richardson , Stockholm , Sweden
Well, i'm from spain and I really think that hamilton is fantastic, in the future he will win a lot of championships but i must say that he has a very good car and it is an advantage because it isn't easy start in the F1 with one of the best cars... hamilton is good but the car is very good too!
lorena, barcelona, Spain
César Lahoz,
Funny that is, coming from a country where F1 didn't even exist before Alonso started winning things. Don't worry I'm sure it will back to the Basketball , Los Toros and Sorpresa Sorpresa once he starts losing every week.
Bryan, Madrid,
Lewis reminded me strongly of the young Schumaker, in his certainty, during the interview, afterwards.
The brio, and self-possesion, are an almost uncanny replication.
Mike Playfoot, Auckland, New Zealand
Let's face it, I'm Spanish and love Alonso wins but if Hamilton continues to drive as he has, he will make everything happen for him. Not one single mistake since the start of the championships and Alonso did yesterday... pressure? Let;s wait and see. But hey, thats what will make it fun. Even Michael may be back next year, how good could that be??? Ham vs Alonso vs Schummi!!!!!!!!!!!!
Antonio, devon,

Well done for Hamilton. However, remember that the same strategy he so vehemently criticised after the Monaco Grand Prix now he praises. That's not being objective. It is now that he can see why his team pulled him into the pit lane even knowing he had fuel for more laps. Safety car is an issue in F1now. He is talented, he is a star, no doubt yet somewhat immature, in Monaco he let his mouth run away with him. Let this be a lesson to him.
Oscar, Madrid, Spain
Congrats Lewis.
Bravo to you, Lewis and Mr Ron Denis who gave you that opportunity to prove that you can do it.
Also, I can say to you just be yourself and maitain the homely discipline that you have.
Be careful of what you say and do, as the eyes of the world is on you.
Keep it up.
Charles Carr, London, UK
Hamilton, in the future, will be a big champion.
Now the best is Fernando Alonso
no doubts!!
MANEL, madrid, spain
You can see the podium. Absolutely irregular. It resumes the GP.
If we do like the briton press now we would speaking about team decisions, the worst tires for Alonso and the changes in the pits stops (it was programmed that Alonso stop first) that made a great damage to his position. Remember that and think about your position after the Monaco GP.
We must think that we are talking about sportsmens who can lose their lives on Sunday. You are pushing a young boy without experience too. All in order to generate an artificial dispute between partners. Dont lose the North, the target is Ferrari.
Congratulations Lewis for your first victory, lucky boy. Maybe, one day, youll reach Fernando Alonsos level. But today you need win two World Championships in order to be a serious opponent.
To Nick and friends: Pressure?. Hamilton will never knows what is run with Schumi.
The best: Kubica is ok.
Manuel, Cadiz, Spain
C'mon guys! Ham drove brilliantly yesterday but he was pretty lucky as well... what would have happened if Alonso pitted in the 23rd lap and Ham on the 24th? I know the brittons are quite fanatic of their drivers but there are still 11 races to go and the best driver will be the one with more points at Brazil... not now!
Fer, London,

Peter, Alonso clearly made big mistakes, but you should recognize that Hamilton was extremely lucky by having his two stops on the previous lap of a safety car.
Jose Ramon, Madrid, Spain
Lewis Hamiltons season has been amazing. He drives with intelligence, determination and to the limits of his incredible talent. And it is exciting for British fans who are probably flocking back to the sport, now that we have a credible challenger.
So sad to read so much anger from Spanish fans, Alonso is a great driver, but who leads the chamionship?
M C, Sevenoaks, UK
LOL at the bitter Spanish fans here - pathetic really. The fact that Ham has made Alonse look like a rookie yesterday says as much about Ham's talent as it says about Alonso's limitations under pressure.
Nick Simon, Worthing, UK
Sounds like Carlos has been drinking too many sour grapes. Lewis drove another brilliant race, and put Alonso under all sorts of pressure. We should enjoy a good fight for the remainder of the season - which Hamilton has a great chance of winning (being the better driver).
John, London,
Hamilton drove like a racing genius, he deservred to win.
However as a spectator, the numerous complicated racing rules, certainly need changing. Also I do think this Montreal track is highly dangerous, and it was due to great luck that there was not a fatality.
DAVID VINTER, Louth, Lincs,, UK.
Good win for him but lets face it hes in a car that's suppose to win. If he wasn't at the front then i would be surprise. Put him in a midfield car and lets see how good he is.
Hes vastly over rated, hes no where near the to 5 of drivers in F1, i haven't seen him fight wheel to wheel lap after lap, i haven't seen him over take. How will he deal with the media put hes down and they start kicking him.
Kitson, London,
Alonso attributed Hamilton's win to luck!
What a graceless man he is, Lweis was better on the day, by far. He did not go off the track four times as Alonso did.
Lewis Hamilton has already shown Alonso what it takes to be a real man, next he'll show him how to be a real champion.
Peter Martin, Maidstone, UK
The kid is good, but I think you´re all making too much noise. Concerning all the comments that have been posted saying that he is going to make history I must say that he may make history in english formula one, worlwide, the real record-breaking driver is Alonso, and you are making a mistake by putting him in a second picture.
Pablo Lorenzo, Murcia, spain
Hamilton did it well and probably he is going to become one of the most importants racers of the history in Formula One but, however, he is just forgetting and you all are forgetting that Alonso is nowadays the best one, and he has proved it. Hamilton needs more time and he also needs to be more humble.
Marina, Bilbao, Spain
Carlos, I agree with you. Hamilton is a sploiled child who only complains when he is interested in obtaining somehing whe doesn't deserve.....What about yesterday's strategy???
Later or sooner he will fail and I am loking forward to that moment.
Belen, San Sebastian, Spain
Carlos from Las Palmas - Lewis isn't complaining now because yesterday bore no resemblance to what happened at Monaco. In Monaco Hamilton was in second place and was prevented by his team from competing for first. Yesterday both drivers were allowed to race for the best position they could throughout the race.
Simon Carter, London,
AK is right, this boy is the best thing that could happen to F1 after Schumi's "good bye". What a boy, smart, talented and all that family thing involved makes him so special and easy to like. Wish him the best.
Jose Costa, Lisboa, Portugal
Why doesn´t Lewis complain now about the strategy like he did in Monaco?...He made a mistake by complaining and now he hasn´t said a word!!!is he still thinking that the team only thinks about Alonso?it´s pretty sad!!!!
The british press is doing a war from this and the only enemy is Ferrari...Besides, Alonso is the champion and Lewis will be, but he is not yet!!!
Carlos, Las Palmas, Spain
Any truth to the rumor that Raikonnen will leave Ferrari 'by mutual agreement' during in the near future to be relaced, for the remainder of the season, by (relative unknown) Michael Schumacher?
achalk, Plano, TX
This race was a bit of a lottery and Hamilton was lucky in that everything went for him.
However, every champion is blessed with luck which they go to creating for themselves. Alonso made his own luck over the last two years and deserved the championship. In the same way, Hamilton has deserved this victory for his sheer phenomenal consistency this season (anyone remember him making a mistake apart from brushing the wall at Monaco?)
He has been a great addition to F1. We now have two drivers (3 to include Raikkonen?) who are fighting for not only victories but also to greatness to join the Fangios / Clarks / Sennas of yesteryear. The Alonso fans who comment on this website and are bitter because of and blind to this phenomenonn shoud know that the press everywhere in the world (except Spain I imagine - possible case of bias?) is reporting the same. So while they lambast Hamilton and stubbornly defend Alonso's season, the rest of the world else can enjoy history being made.
Ishikawa, Osaka, Japan
Yes Wurz was a distant 5.3 seconds behind as Hamilton eased up over the final few laps.
Mike, Kuala Lumpur,
I was there, and Lewis drove an amazing race. Avoided all the drama and showed that he can be a champion in his rookie season. He's a genuine person, and a great driver!
Geoff, Montreal, Quebec
Absolutely fantastic! The first British driver to really fire our enthusiasm since the days of Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill. In addition to his obviously huge talent he seems genuinely pleasant, intelligent and modest. Sports Personality of the year already and icon for the future. Keep it real Lewis. Avoid the bimbos and the hangers on, remember where you came from and the public will love you in a way you can't begin to imagine.
Paul Owen, Birmingham, UK
Wurz finished just 5.3s behind Hamilton. If that's "distant" what about Kimi & co?
S Carpenter, Basingstoke,
If you continue saying bad things about Alonso, the real fear will appear
César Lahoz, Madrid , Spain
I believe Hamilton would not only make history in Formula One ,but would also increase the fan base. Glad that McLaren Mercedes believed in him and gave him the chance.
