Fernando Alonso, the reigning Formula One champion, could return to Renault for next season after a turbulent year at McClaren. Flavio Briatore, the Renault team boss, has confirmed offering Alonso his old job back whenever he decides to quit McLaren.
Briatore said: "I told Fernando that the moment he is free from McLaren we would be pleased to have him back. It would be stupid to deny that."
Alonso's relationship with Ron Dennis, the McClaren team supremo, has been severely strained following a furious row between the two men on the morning of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The 26-year-old threatened to reveal details of emails that would incriminate McLaren in the spy scandal unless he was guaranteed number one status within the team.
Alonso has also endured a fractious battle with team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who is poised to take his world title after a stunning win in yesterday's Japanese Grand Prix.
Briatore is convinced Alonso would not have quit Renault if he had been aware he would receive the same treatment as a rookie.
"If, before signing the contract, they told Fernando 'come with us, but you won't have any sort of advantage', he wouldn't have gone," Briatore said. "If you hire a world champion, then you must give him the number one status."
Briatore claims Alonso will be afforded that prestige if he does quit McLaren and rejoin Renault, who helped him win the 2005 and 2006 world championships.
Although Alonso has stated he will stay at McLaren for next year, his position appears untenable, and in particular after Hamilton suggested over the weekend he would be better off at another team.
One potential avenue has been closed after Jean Todt, the Ferrari team manager, laughed off suggestions Alonso will drive for the Italian team next year.
When asked about Alonso's chances of a race seat for 2008, Todt replied: "Zero percent.
"We have two fantastic drivers in Kimi (Raikkonen) and Felipe (Massa). We are very happy with them and they are under contract. I would respect a contract for a guy cleaning the floor, so you can imagine that I will respect a contract with them.
"If we have a contract, we respect it."
Bernie Ecclestone, the Formula One supremo, proposed Alonso could take a year off and then join Ferrari in 2009. But Alonso himself has dismissed suggestions of a sabbatical, saying: "That's not in my plans. I want to race - I'm 100 per cent.
"However and wherever, but I enjoy racing and that's what I want. Next year there will be an important change in the rules, with all driver aids removed, so it's a season you have to race. It's important to adapt to the cars, which will basically be completely new."
That further underlines the fact Renault appear his only escape route, although he is ready to endure another torrid scrap with Hamilton should they again be team-mates in 2008.
"If we are not together next year and I have a competitive car, then fine," Alonso said. "But if we have to stay together, we'll have another beautiful fight."
Alonso's chances of a third successive world title are extremely slim after he crashed at a rain-lashed Fuji Speedway, finishing a race without a point for the first time this year.
The Spaniard is now 12 points adrift of Hamilton with just two grands prix remaining in China and Brazil.

If alonso was such a great world champion then he would not be so out paced by lewis, no matter how much advice alonso had given him. Also McLarens pedigree was not built buy alonso, they have been racing for a long time. Lets not forget that it was alonso that aproached McLaren in 2006 not the other way around. Cheer up spainards 2 world titles is still pretty good!

Whoever commented that Alonso and Delarosa should heve been penalised was absolutely right, They knew something was up and when Alonso went to Ron Dennis and threatened him with some kind of exposure Dennis went straight to the FIA so it wouod appear to me dennis knew nothing of any goings on and for that matter neither did Hamilton. It stinks of set up. £50 million totally ludicroous!!! and as for Moseley the sooner he goes the better ,obnoctious just like his father.

Nice UK media... nothing said about Fernando's car damage after previous incident and it's influence in the crash!
I wish Mac Laren will desapear next season!

Assuming Hamilton wins title and Alonso stays at McLaren I'm sure Alonso would be happy with the new world champion getting number 1 status in the team for 2008. After all thats what he wanted this year!

I have a strong feeling that McLaren has been unfair, helping Hamilton over Alonso after Monaco. Then things have gone worse and worse, and at Fuji, in the Q3 the final tyres of Alonso were deliberately slower than those of Hamilton (incorrect pressures, maybe?') and suddenly, and only in the latest laps, Hamilton was faster than Alonso... how estrange..!! Equal tyres?... I don't believe it.
The question is⦠can a driver win a Championship against the willing of his own team, having an extremely competitive and talented team mate, but narrowly slower?.. I'm afraid the answer is: NO.

Loyaltie is not the word to use in this. Tell m my friend, who wento to FIA comisaries in MOnaco saying that team has order him to lose?? who in hungary meanwhile alonso just did what team said ,talked to press and fia comisaries saying that team has done the stop longer in order to avoid him to make last round?? have you heard alonso in any declartions talkinig in an inadecuated way about team?? and believe me he has had plenty of reasons to do it. I had only read about hamiltons complinings, insulting ron denis, insulting the team, insulting alonso... Alonso never talks about others things than cars...many of you should learn from him

Alonso and Hamilton are actually great mates. They also know how to monetize the publicitiy their career brings.
After years of dull Schumacherian domination, we now have good racing and a bitter rivalry to compliment. Great on TV ratings, sponsors and fans are happy, they get more publicity and make more money.
It would be a sad day if Alonso took a sabbatical - Hamilton would dominate, with the Ice Man winning occasionally. And then what would we be left? Another Schumacherian domination and maybe I might watch a race if i have nothing better to do....
Long live the pantomine!!

to suggest that a driver should have automatic no.1 status just
because he is world champion is mad - if that was followed then we'd still be watching jackie stewart and emmerson fittapaldi slugging it out (all be it on zimmer frames ) - get real its a dog eat dog out there (and its hamilton who is doing the eating) !

What do you say british newspapers? Alonso is the most great champion with his age. In Gp China Alonso will have pole and he´ll have the ten points. Jaimitommm zero points, and we´ll see the hell of Brazil. ALONSO CAMPEON!!!!!!
FILTER, DE PURA RAZA, ESPAÃA
We don't know the truth, but here in spain or in the different 'planet' ( as someone said, don't mind ), we see the other part of the history. Alonso's declarations has't appeared or they are in parts. Alonso said in response to ron dennis and everybody, that there are a lot of lies about him, and he didn't want to answer to ron dennis declarations because the only thing that cares him is to drive. That's not a positive thing? and it's said too that Hamilton asked for alonso to left mclaren, so he is creating bad atmospheare in mclaren too, not only alonso,( as ron dennis an everybody said). Hamilton and his father has done a lot of declarations, and they continue doing that. Now hamilton's father is talking about alonso's fathe, in an australian channel. It appear in spanish press not here... They continue creating more and more tension... What a pity....
And I am not an Alonso fan. Last year I didn't like him.... I consider Hamilton a great pilot.....
clara, sevilla, spain
From my point of view, hiring Alonso was a perfect move by Ron Dennis, it was the best and easiest way to bring Hamilton to the top.
First, you know one of the good things about Alonso is that he helps improving the performane of the cars, so you get his input on that area, and so does Hamilton.
Second, you have your worst enemy within. Had Alonso gone on with Renault or moved to Ferrari, BMW or Toyota, Hamilton would have had his fiercest oponent in another team, out of reach.
Great job, Ron.
Erik, Stockholm, Sweden
Nobody has ever given any real proof of the fact that Alonso has demanded the number 1 position, a simple statement from Ron Dennis proves nothing, so it is a shame that this 'newspaper' want to maken everybody believe that the threat is a fact. Shame on you, British press. I thought that the disgusting days in the era of Mansell were over....... I was wrong.
Michael de Reijer, antwerp, belgium
If anyone still believes that Alonso assists Hamilton in any way since Hungary -then they are living on a different planet or in Spain. As for Alonso, or anyone else for that matter being given preference in a team, this would be embarrasing for all the teams as it would appear that every 'No 2' driver is doing better than the 'No 1'. What Alonso seems to want is that he must always be ahead of his No 2 team mate on the grid irrespective of performance during qualifying.
There is no doubt that Alonso is a gifted and experienced driver who has earned the title of World Champion. He has learned his skills over many years and at times has had to struggle in less than perfect cars to beat the rest of the field. I know I would not be happy to see a new driver with no F1 experience out driving me after all the years of work I had put into the sport. But I hope I would be enough of a man to accept the situation and not keep complaining that 'its not fair'.
jonathan mills, Brighton,
That is what you would like: Fernando in Renault. No way. Next year, Fernando in Ferrari: world champion again, no doubt.
Fran, Madrid, Spain
I have been reading newspapers titles and there are a lot of speculation above all that, In spanish neswpaperes says thet maclaren will separate into two parts and ron dennis will go with Hamilton ( what a surprise) and fernando alonso will stay with pedro in the other team. Here I read that he maybe go to renaul :S.
I think that if the twice world champion has the unique chance to go to renault, it is a shame for the sport, because here we aren't been objetive. All we know that renault isn't the most competitive team, it is after ferrari, mclaren, bmw... I consider that F1 is becoming a media circus. we maybe don't like alonso's personallity , but despreciate his sportive archiviements putting Hamilton( he is a new pilot) before him,... that smell very bad....
Come'n Alonso
maria, zaragoza, spain
Fabio Briattore is right. Ron doesn't have a clue as to how to treat latino drivers: Senna, Montoya, and now Alonso. And is not FA who has been making derogative comments all week long. Now that he thinks he has the title in the pocket even dares to put more pressure on the team saying that he wouldn't want FA with him next year. That's fine. What he doesn't realize is that next year the cars are going to be completely different: no track control, no electronic aids...wait a second!!!...Lewis, who is going to tell you which brake load distribution you'll have to apply to now?. Ahhh!, Fernando is not here to help, hey?.
Renault is a great team with a long sport history behind them. Do you think that if FA was a cheat and troublemaker they'd want him back?. No, want happens is that Favio knows better than anyone what is happening with FA. And he won't go to Ferrari because it'll be the same history, although for having KR and FM in nearly same points they look far more peaceful than McL.

Amazing!!! really amazing reading english newspapers. You live in other galaxy. How started the fighting?? was it Alonso?? or was Hamilton and his father in Monaco?? Who is making all kind of declarations on tv and newspapers??Being the world champion of course gives you respect and favour treat because you just deserve it. Ask yourselfes what would happened if alonso were british?? and you find the answer and also remember where were mclaren cars last year without alonso, where wasd renault with alonso and where are both then now.If alonso was the debil as you treat him in all your tv o newspaper do you think renault would be pleased to have him again?? do you think todd wiil open dors to ferrari when every body knows he said he dindt never wants alonso in ferrari?? alonso is a warranty of good car and good driving and didnt deserve what is happening to him this year.

Alonso and Kimi, the best drivers in the best car.
BTG, coruna, Iberia
Alonso has been Ferrari's "not-very-secret" agent for much of this season, culminating in his ultimatum to McLaren, who were then punished for his own handling of sensitive data and communications. I hope Ferrari want him, because it's hard to imagine a team with integrity and principles wanting his services.
Austin, London,
MacLaren had no car and no driver before Alonso appeared. Hamilton will sorely miss riding the coattails of Alonso.
yeah right mat and the tooth faiery has been made the CO of the world bank

Flaviatore rocks! he definitely has charm and warmth and enjoys the attention he gets by having Alonso in his team. The English have proved to be too cold and distant. Good hypocrites though, Ron and co love to smile and shake hands and then they stab you in the back

It's important to know how to lose but much more to know how to win Lewis...you're a great driver but be generous now
Alain Bastard, Marseille, France
Renault would be a good option but I doubt they would want Alonso for one year only--assuming he is set on moving to Ferrari in 2009.
McLaren would be a good option for the team, because they'd have the (arguably) best driver-developer on the grid. However, with Hamilton as King of the World they might think they don't need him.
There's a free seat at Toyota, so maybe Jean Todt and Felipe Massa might want to move over a year before schedule. Ferrari have a lot of money to spend, Toyota have a lot too and McLaren have a fine to pay, so maybe it would work out.
Nico Rosberg or Sebastian Vettel, both Germans, would be good options for McLaren Mercedes. Remember, Mercedes are German and they own 40% of the team.
The smart thing would be to talk to all the sponsors and shareholders and see what they think.
Michel Angstadt, Serranillos del Valle, (Madrid) Spain
I've lost all respect I had for Alonso, which was considerable until his behavior this year showed us his true colors. Hamilton is a great driver, but it is embarrassing to see the double world champion being outperformed from race one in the same car.
Dag Johansen, Paris, France
Ferrari will never take Alonso, no matter what. Above all else, Ferrari demand loyalty and commitment to the Scuderia - look at how many champions have been dismissed for even talking against the team. If they can fire Alain Prost, they're sure as beans not going to take Alonso who has clearly demonstrated exactly where his priorities and loyalties lie...
Stuart, Johannesburg, South Africa
Hamilton drove brilliantly in Japan, Alonso was unlucky.
No one apparently seems to mind that Ferrari started this year with a bendy floor and floppy wings, things outlawed since the 1960s. If Ferrari had been treated like Mclaren were, they should have been banned for 10 years and fine £1bn for each year. Ferrari stil have wheel hubs that stick pout too far and no one notices
