Fernando Alonso will be a Renault driver within days on a contract that will make him the highest-paid driver in the history of Formula One thought to be worth as much as £70 million over three years.
The Renault team were not punished after being found guilty last week of spying charges by the FIA. Alonso is understood to have a clause in his contract that would make him free to leave at the end of the first year. He had hoped to be recruited by Ferrari in 2009 but that is an increasingly dim and distant hope after Kimi Raikkonen’s determined drive to the World Championship last season.
The mystery of who partners Lewis Hamilton at McLaren goes on, though. Nico Rosberg, the preferred option of Ron Dennis, McLaren’s team principal, effectively ruled himself out yesterday by signing a deal that will keep him at the Williams Toyota team until 2010. Rosberg had been known to be unhappy with a contract that paid him only £500,000-a-year.
Which all narrows the options for McLaren to Pedro de la Rosa, their test driver. De la Rosa is a steady hand, though hardly star material but after a turbulent 2007 season Dennis may be happy to accept a period of stability and calm.

It was really weird knowing McLaren was trying to get Fernando Alonso back to McLaren. I wonder what kind of contract retains Ron within McLaren. If I was a shareholder, he would be fired out!
Ron must be the one and only who cannot appreciate the talent of a two times world champion.

To freedom of speech,
If you have such an opinion of Spanish people, what the hell are you doing living in Spain? Are you not interested in money? Are you a filantropist? We like , as a whole, having foreign people in our country, that contributes to the economy and to the cutlural richness of Spain. We have much to learn from each other, and for that mutual respect is basic.
Anyway, if you are unhappy, don't forget that the door is open. You came, you can go. No problem.
carmen, murcia,
With their coffers bulging with McLaren's $100m, it was nice of the FIA not to spoil that deal for Fernando. Takes one back to the FISA/FOCA rows of the 1980's!

To Hekky Ripoffenen,
Fernando Alonso is an asset! A double champion, who can improves any team, and the investment is worthy !! Mostly for the big bank ING, that money is a penny!! Now think that every body will be watching the competition Alonso vs Hamilton. Who will win? ING and SANTANDER

"Where are the parsimonious lawyers protecting Renault's shareholders? Locking in a questionable talent for such unjustifiable sums is a disgrace."
All Renault's lawyers are teaching McLaren's Shareholders how to protect their patrimony from their CEO and his unquestionable incapacity and talent to manage a company.
Renault is happy jointing Fernando Alonso while Ron Dennis is quite busy trying to keep Mutua Madrileña sponsorship with them. Another 6 Millions ⬠per year going out from the miserable team.

I guess that Renault people know Alonso far better than any of us, so if they are paying this amount, thay probably know what they are doing!
Regarding Alonso and Mclaren, I have seen more teams going for Alonso than drivers going for the 2nd Mclaren seat.
That must hurt, doesn´t it, Ron?
javier, Madrid,
£70m! Renault's negotiators must be headed by Brian Barwick's brother. Perhaps Terry Venables will also be offered an advisory role with the same unjustifiable largesse. Where are the parsimonious lawyers protecting Renault's shareholders? Locking in a questionable talent for such unjustifiable sums is a disgrace. I trust there is a "glumness" and "whinging" penalty clause for inveterate misanthropy and press leakage. On past form it will be invoked 9 races out of 10.
Hekky Ripoffenen, Hong Kong,
I´m not really surprised about De La Rosa being the 2nd driver at McLaren. Don´t think there were many volunteers at the vacant race seat after what happened to Alonso. Shows what the rest of the paddock thought about the goings on last season, doesn´t it. Still think McLaren and Hamilton are blameless!?
