Take a trip to New York and see the city from the air

Heikki Kovalainen, the new McLaren Mercedes teammate of Lewis Hamilton, said this weekend that he is convinced the troubled Woking-based team can now move on after one of the worst years in their history, dominated by feuding drivers and allegations of cheating.
Speaking on the eve of the Race of Champions at Wembley Stadium yesterday, in which Kovalainen pitted his wits against 15 other drivers from a range of disciplines, among them Michael Schumacher, the Finn said that McLaren are ready to turn over a new leaf. “Before I signed the contract, I asked about the issue [the McLaren/ Ferrari “Spygate” scandal] and all I know is that it is not going to affect our performance next year,” Kovalainen said.
“I haven’t been involved in that case . . . but for me, and for McLaren as well, the intention is to make everything clear as soon as possible. We want to leave everything behind, make sure everyone is happy about the situation and move on.”
Kovalainen, who made his debut at Renault this year, starting poorly but improving as the season progressed, faces an unenviable task as Hamilton’s teammate. Ringing in his ears will be recent comments by Martin Whitmarsh, the embattled chief operating officer at McLaren, who made it clear that the team’s principal target next year will be to make Hamilton world champion. “Lewis is already McLaren’s main focus,” Whitmarsh said.
Thus Kovalainen may have to accept a role as Hamilton’s support act, even though he has just as much experience in Formula One as the Briton. This will not be easy for an ambitious driver who made clear as recently as last month, while he was still at Renault, that he wants to fight for the World Championship himself.
“I want to be in a competitive car to be able to fight for victories and the championship, wherever that is,” Kovalainen said. “It does not matter as long as it is competitive and I have equal status with my teammate. I am not willing to support anyone from the beginning of the season, everyone knows this.
“It is OK if the other driver is stronger at the end of the season and if I need to help, then it is fine.
“But I need to be able to start the season fair and square and with equal treatment and that is very important to me.”
No one is expecting the same fireworks between Hamilton and Kovalainen as characterised the traumatic breakdown in relations between Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. However, the rumours on the Formula One grapevine are that Hamilton was not entirely delighted when Kovalainen got the job ahead of Pedro De La Rosa, the McLaren test driver.

martin Whitmarsh said that their main focus is Hamilton? didn´t they said before, with alonso-hamilton that in mclaren there is no number one, and their pilots have the same focus? Now we can see that we can´t trust in what mclaren says, Hamilton is a great driver but mclaren is not a fair "scuderie"
Vic, berlin,
Heikki is a good lad, but Lewis Hamilton said he will lead the team this year. Therefore, I can't understand the claims by McLaren during the last year about equal conditions for both drivers. I might feel a bit confused, but fortunatelly this season will show us how McLaren plays. Once again.
Good luck, Heikki!
Igor, Pamplona,
If I've understood correctly, despite several Ferrari elements being found on the 2008 Mclaren cars, no punishment will be handed down to Mclaren.
The design features stolen from Ferrari for the 2008 car include the quickshift, fast fill, and CO2 as a tyre gas. FIA are apparently going to let Mclaren go unpunished because they apologized and because they have promised to remove all the stolen items form their car.
This seems very strange to me for two reasons:
(1) an apology (if we can call it that), I think most people will agree, won't let you escape punishment for doing something illegal unless we are talking about a scenario such as a primary school or kindergarten (which is clearly not the case here)
(2) the "word" of Mclaren, in the light of the 2007 events, is worth how much?
With a bit of luck at least Mclaren won't paint their 2008 cars red.

Good luck Heikki...you're going to need it...bucketloads, in order not to die of desperation when you'll see what's going on in the Woking based team.
Antonio, Tunbridge Wells, UK
Poor Heikki, he will be backstabbed by his team after the first time he overcomes Hamilton. Then Ron Dennis will smile while he tells the press that MacLaren is giving his pilots an "equal treatment". Ron Dennis, that gentleman.
Domingo, Piedras Blancas, España
The good thing is that at last Mclaren has come clean and admited that all the equality policy was rubbish.
jordi, bournemouth, uk
Perhaps Kovalainen has bitten off more than he can chew. With RD on one side and LH on the other he's going to be working next to a couple of snakes.
0 wins between him and LH is what I expect in 2008, as the Ferrari design elements have been removed from the 2008 car, and Alonso isn't there anymore to do LH's setups. I believe this year will be about Ferrari, Renault (as was the case before the spygate) plus Honda and Toyota.
Tetsuya, Tokyo, Japan
Kovalainen should let Hamilton take care of all the talking off the track--something at which the young Briton excels.
It would be wise for the Finn to do his talking on the track, just as his predecessor at McLaren did during the second part of the season, and we all saw that his results got much better.
4 wins across the two of them is all I expect in 2008, but we'll see.
Michel Angstadt, Serranillos del Valle, (Madrid) Spain
Hamilton's already seen off a double world champ - brave noises Heiki!
Can't wait to see all the performance Alonso will bring back to Renault though; if the continental fans are to be believed all of McLaren's pace had come from Renault with the Spaniard. Mmmmmmm.....
Anwar Shah, Bromsgrove,
Heikki - Do you not like yourself? You are obviously going to be playing second fiddle to him. If Fernando couldn't get equality or preference as a WORLD CHAMPION obviously you're not.
Debbie, Chesterfield, England
McLaren, who made it clear that the teamâs principal target next year will be to make Hamilton world champion. âLewis is already McLarenâs main focus,â Whitmarsh said.
Well, that was this way last year too, with Fernado the man who make Maclaren come back to a winning position, whitout FA on board, neither MC or HAM would have reach anything last year. So with KOVA on board, whom is nobody in F1, this coming season will be the same for shure.
Any pilot who wants to race a Maclaren must know where he must be. As the number 2.
FA where able to race the last races, because he have it writen in his contract, if that wheren't this way FA haven't had raced the last part of the season, (he signed to drive all the races of the season) what wasn't in contract was an equal treatament
That was the only equal treatament, having a car to race, but not the best strategies, to have a turtle to race in Brasil, etc.
I hope, even I know that's imposible, that KOVA may have real equal treatmanet.
Jose Balseiros, Oviedo,
I think anyone is going to have problems with hamilton. Didn´t see a queue of drivers wanting the job!
Victor, santiago,
Hamilton is trouble for anyone employing him.we will see it next year.
E.Ovelar, Sydney, Australia
Where do you get your rumours from? It seems you are making up your own rumours. The rumours I heard were that Hamilton DID NOT WANT Pedro as team mate as he wants someone who will push him to bring out his best although the team wanted Pedro to cut their already thin budget. Also what is not rumours is that Hamilton's WISH LIST not too long ago WAS Heikki, Nico Rosberg and Adrian Sutil. So why should he not be delighted when he gets his wish? Get your rumours right!
