Max Mosley, the FIA president, believes Lewis Hamilton can become the most successful Formula One driver of all time.
Mosley was not too disheartened to see Hamilton miss out on the world championship by a single point last year, arguing that Kimi Raikkonen deserved his opportunity to win the title. The Finn clinched the crown in a thrilling climax to the season in the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos where Hamilton was cruelly denied after suffering a gearbox problem.
Mosley, though, maintains the 23-year-old McLaren driver will have many more chances to win the championship, potentially eclipsing the seven won by Michael Schumacher. "If you are thinking about the drivers dispassionately, it was Raikkonen's turn more than Lewis'," Mosley said. "But Lewis will get plenty of turns. Unless something dramatically goes wrong, he will win several championships.
"I think Ron [Dennis, the McLaren team manager] said the other day, that to have missed out on the championship by a point, to have won four races and been on the podium in the first nine races in his first season is a record that will take a very long time before it is equalled.
"If he races for as long as Michael did then he may very well beat his record, but there are some very good, young drivers about, so he is not going to have an easy time."
Although Hamilton only recently signed a new five-year contract with McLaren, believed to be worth £10 million per year, there were occasions last season when the politics of the sport dragged him down. Hamilton even suggested he could quit F1 if the politics continued to impact on him, yet Mosley has urged him to bank his millions and forget the outside interference.
"Lewis and everybody else has to recognise it is a complex sport, and we [the FIA] do our best," Mosley said. "But when you think in our case the ball changes between events, and it's different for each team, while there are also 50 to 100 modifications on each car between each pair of races.
"We're trying to keep on top of this and make sure nobody does something that is unfair, and the teams are spending mega-bucks on research and development. McLaren have something like 140 engineers trying to improve the car constantly.
"To put each pair of cars on the grid you've something like 800 to 1,000 people at the top end all concentrating on looking for anything that might give them a thousandths of a second advantage. We're looking all the time to see they've not done something that is outside the rules to get those fractions, so it's complex.
"My advice to Lewis would be to put the money in the bank and don't worry about the politics. As long as he keeps driving quick he will be all right. I'm sure when he said what he did it was the emotion of the moment. You can understand him saying 'I'm fed up of this' which he is entitled to say, but I don't think it would be a considered judgment."

I think all of the Spanish here are forgetting something:
He did have a good car in his first season so the comparisons with Senna et al are unacceptable...
BUT...
he also BEAT Alonso (an excellent driver who knew the circuits) using the same car (with the same setup).
Alex, London,
Oh dear. I see it's going a repeat of last year with our Spanish friends keeping up the stream of amusing comments. Ah well...
Andy G, London, UK
If LH were so good he wouldn't need repeat it so often or hear it so much. He is good no doubt but not a champ. Sorry Brits, I love you and love your wonderful country but this driver is not what he seemed to be. Soon you will get a champion.
Adele, ALC, Spain
yes yes yes yes, LH will be the Poulidor of F1... he alredy has his first and fantastic subchampionship, after loosing 17 points lead... marvelous, how sweet...
oscar, alicante, spain
Oh no, this is disasterous!!!
I was hoping LH would have a great season.... the last thing he needs is an endorsement from Max Moseley, it is the kiss of death!
Could Max please endorse Alonso and Raikonen instead!
Graeme, Huntingdon, UK
I hope LH,as Mosley says, the same achievement he did last year.
I wouldn´t mind him being six more years the youngest loser in F1.

Tim of London. if you are a World Champion I bet you'll want preferential status to a rookie.
Can you imagine Pavarotti, Carreras or Miriam Gauci two of the world's leading tenors and a prime soprano, not expecting preferential treatment to a member of the chorus?
Reno, Valletta, Malta
of course lewis is arrogant, he has to be, all F1 drivers are to some extent, jenson button thinks he is the best driver on the grid, he results don't agree but he truly believes it and in his own words he has to, otherwise he shouldn't be in F1, alonso is definately arrogant, why else would he want preferential treatment? i think we all just have to wait and see what happens this season, it will certainly resolve all the disputes on these pages, will put a bet on lewis though, safe money me thinks!!
tim, london, england
So why all this hype about Lewis.
He is just a fast driver who was lucky enough to get the drive of his life in one of the fastest cars of 2007, fully set up by the two times World Champion Fernando Alonso.
McLaren in 2007 invested in the World Champion but failed to cash in on their investment, preferring to concentrate their efforts on an unknown and untried rookie to create a sensation, embarking on a strategy which backfired on them.
Lewis is a fast driver, he has proven that, but he is by no means a Michael Schumacher, nor even a Fernando Alonso.
A driver is as good as the package that is supplied to him by his team, then it is up to him to drive it beyond its potential.
2008 shall see a number of drivers trying to achieve that, because most have a point to prove.
Reno, Valletta, Malta
nobody has doubt about hamilton talent as "chauffeur", but many uncertainty remains about tth following questions
1.- the drivers this year (LH and HK) will be able to develop and setup the cars for the races?
at the moment, de la Rosa and Paffet did the work but in a weekend race the pilots must find their own settings
2.- last year the setup from FA was good for LH, but the setup from HK will be the best for LH?
3.- in this month FA gains (more or less) 0.6 seconds with R28, it is reasonable that he will develop more the car.
in my modest opinion, this season R28 will be the second car in the grid, if not from the first course in the global season
au revoir

How old are you pal?. It seems to me that you are loosing perspective. MS is a legend while the "briton" was just lucky to compete in a good car and that's it. Think of retirement, man!!
Robert Jung, Berlin, Germany
Tim (from London) I think you should read Kimi's Biograph and pay attension to his first F1 season with Sauber a back of the grid team and consider what he achived. Kimi has always out-drove the car. Hamilton is the first rookie to jump straight into a competitive car so put it in context. Lewis is no Schumacher, a Villnerve or a Hill he might be
Verbal, Midlands, UK
As far as I know, the same expectations came out for the other British pilot... what 's his name ? I do not remember ... more than one hundred races and only one victory.
Mosley is British, isn't him ? LH eclipsing Schumaker ?? ha ha ha!. First he has to win a WDC... and them four or five in a row.
JoseBelgica, Brussel, Belgium
Who listens to Max Mosley?
As an aside when asked in 2009 who came second in 2007 who's going to know or care?
With all the things that can go wrong in F1, LH may not even win one WDC never mind seven or eight.
However one concedes that should any driver emulates MS's achievements they will have scaled a personal everest so if you want to waste a euro put it on LH to do so (I suspect the odds to be astronomical) if he does succeed you'll never have to work again!
TriumphST, B,ham, UK
good achievements of Hamilton in his first year, indeed winning 4 races and nine podiums is a great record. now please allow me ro remind you a couple of things:
Senna started off his career in a Lotus.
Michael Schumacher started off in a Jordan.
Kimi started off in a Sauber.
Alonso started off in a Minardi.
i don't know of any driver who started his F1 career in a world championship potentially winning car, so Hamilton record needs to be looked up with some perspective.
what is more inspiring, Hamilton winning a race with the best or second best car of the grid, or Senna finishing in the points with a Lotus, or even Alonso finishing 13th with a Minardi and overtaking a Renault in his first race in Australia 01 ?
i don't know.
Hamilton does not need any more hype than the one he's getting, he is now arrogant enough. let's leave it a few years so we can have some perspective. there are plenty of drivers as good as Hamilton, without a proper car, so let's wait and see...
Carlos, Madrid, Spain,
It seems that he could be sending a message to the FIA, any case his words can be misunderstood .
Now we need that Felipe is a real alternative and R28 to be good car, then you will see how many wrong decisions can happen this year. Charlie better think twice before acting, as all people are watching and paying a lot of attention.
At least we are happy that with Ron management, Lewis Hamilton will do nothing better than speaking. What a chance he lost last year. "We were racing against Fernando" Do you remember?. Kova, bad luck you have this year.
Come on Plowman! We need gravel with good trenches.
victor, cadiz, spain
Maybe with the PlayStation.....
Whynot, Paris, France
Everyone keeps going on about how LH messed up last season and threw the championship away and that KR is a better driver blah blah, i think what people forget is that LH was on the podium for the first nine races, won 4 races, came second in the championship all in his FIRST season, something which kimi or alonso didn't do, i think mosley is right, lewis could eclipse Schumacher, but will be happy just to win one championship first
tim, London, England
It seems to me that Mr Gorman is so ansious.
To Improve Schumacher record, Hamilton has to win his first WDC, then another six.... maybe all of them in a row!
IDR, Madrid, Spain
Incredible. It is not fair at all to show suh a favouritism towards LH.
Carlos, Madrid, Spain
