Formula One is to return to BBC television from the beginning of next year, signalling the end of a 12-year stint on ITV and almost certainly wholesale changes in commentary personnel.
The BBC lost its rights to Formula One after the 1996 season but, following an approach from the sport's ringmaster Bernie Ecclestone, the Corporation has now signed a television rights deal for five years to go alongside its exclusive rights to radio, mobile and internet broadcasting of the sport.
It appears that Ecclestone decided to exercise an option to cancel his contract with ITV two years before it was due to end and has put his faith in the BBC. It is not known what the consequences will be for the ITV commentary team but there was immediate speculation in Formula One circles that several key players will be replaced.
Among those most likely not to make the switch to the BBC are the lead commentator James Allen and the pitlane reporter Louise Goodman. However the summariser and former racing driver Martin Brundle is thought likely to stay on and work with a new man from the BBC. Among the names in the hat from the BBC for that role are David Croft, the current Formula One commentator on BBC Radio Five Live and his predecessor, Jonathan Legard, who now covers football for Radio Five. Another possibility is that Brundle himself takes over the main commentary role and works alongside a new summariser.
Commenting on the new deal, Ecclestone who is in Kuala Lumpur for the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday, said: "I am delighted to conclude this new deal with the BBC. It is an exciting time in Formula One and the BBC has some innovative new ideas to consolidate and expand our UK fan base."
Dominic Coles, BBC Sport Director of Sport Rights, said: "The biggest motorsporting event in the world is returning home after 12 years. We were delighted when Bernie Ecclestone approached us about the return of F1 to the BBC. Formula One is a crown jewel of sports broadcasting, so to bring the rights back to their traditional home from 2009 is tremendously exciting."
"Fans will be able to enjoy uninterrupted, state of the art and innovative coverage from BBC Sport, across all of our TV, radio and new media platforms, for the first time since 1996," added Cole.
One intriguing detail is whether or not the BBC will bring back its ever-popular traditional theme tune for its Formula One programmes, The Chain, by Fleetwood Mac. A straw in the wind came last season when Radio Five Live used it for its coverage of the European Grand Prix at the Nurburgring in Germany when veteran commentator Murray Walker returned for one race.

It will be sad to say goodbye to the guys at ITV for sure but what a way for them to bow out with one of the greatest F1 race finale's of all time.
I really don't care about the music as long as the legend that is Martin Brundle moves to the beeb as F1 wouldn't be the same without him!!!
Adam Clarke, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria
I tink it's a shame ITV has lost the rights to F1. Not because of an ITV/ BBC battle but over the last 12 years to get to "know" some of those presenting and (If he doesn't sign upto the Beeb) - Martins inside views and his now famous walkabouts.
I will agree, Thank god no more adverts!!
Kelvin Newton, Warrington, United Kingdom
They must bring back "The Chain" It is the tune of F1
Sandy, Aberdeeen,
Brilliant that Formula 1 is coming back to the beeb!
No more adverts and, hopefully, some less biased opinion! Maybe we can hear about ALL the drivers rather than just 'the great and glorious Mr Hamilton'!
Please, please, please, bring back the Fleetwood Mac theme tune too!!!!
Smith, Dunstable, UK
Please: no more screeching females doing inane, embarrassing interviews and twittering about nothing at all! I am a female, but F1 is a man's sport, so let men handle it. And thank you BBC for no adverts; I have had to put the TV on mute and listen to the commentary on Radio 5 for too many years.
Diana Spencer (Mrs), Wigton, Cumbria, England
Nice to get back to NO ADVERTS. Must get Martin Brundle. His expert insight is great. Please cover the whole weekend, The Chain just has to back as well.. It would be good to see Murray back for acouple of stints as a guest and maybe other F1 stars to assist Martin.
Cooperman, Wigan, UK
Excellent news that F1 is coming back to the BBC, just don't you dare employ James Allen, he is the most biased commentator I've ever heard while Martin Brundle is pure brilliance.
No more adverts, I can't wait for March 2009!!!
Martyn Cummins, Godalming, United Kingdom
Definately good news to see F1 back on the bbc, i had a little cheer to myself when i heard it on the radio.
Oh and please please please keep the old theme tune, it's so cool and very nostalgic.
Kev, Leeds,
Congratulations BBC!
No More TV ads (all of which never prompted me to buy any of the advertised merchandise. The opposite infact) ruining the F1 coverage. And more importantly, no more over dramatic comentary.
Please grab this opportunity Beeb, to bring F1 back to its former glory.
Ged Moss, Herts,
At Last!
Now we can enjoy formula one again.
Alex Tremayne, London,
Thank You BBC.
Now at last we can watch proper coverage of F1.
Please bring back The Chain by Fleetwood Mac, it still evokes a stir in the blood whenever I hear it, for me it will always mean the start of F1 coverage.
A word of caution; ITV thought F1 was like football - it isn't, and the fans are different too, please don't be like them, do it the way you know F1 fans like, without all the meaningless drivel.
Henry Merlin, London,
I'd be interested to see what the internet tv rights are UK only or worldwide. If they are allowed, the BBC could potentially make some money back selling/showing them outside the UK with adverts via iPlayer or it's bbc worldwide (non internet based) TV in countries where specific tv rights haven't been negotiated with Eccleston.
Jeffrey, bath,
This is absolutely fantastic! It's been awful having adverts during the race! I don't want to be watching tampons and hair shampoo's while the race is going on! It's a 2 hour race... show it for 2 hours. And has anyone noticed the starting Sony advert, taking HD to the limit... followed by that appalling quality ITV feed! BBC HD now that has to be the way to watch F1 for the future!
Rock on BBC, my Licence fee just got worth it all over again!
Phil, Banbury, Oxfordshire
Give us back the proper music!!! (The Chain, GP version)
No more weird poofy intro pix and dodgy looking 'girlys'..
Keep Martin Brundle
Peter, London, UK
I was encouraged to read of the BBC winning back the rights to televise Formula 1 from 2009. No more breaks during transmission for adverts and being able to view the results tables after the race without going into adverts.
Hopefully the Fleetwood Mac signature tune, synonymous with Formula 1 will make a comeback.
A concern, though, is that Richard Hammond is tipped to be the presenter. He is knowledgeable on road and sports cars and good at playing with them. However, he has admitted on 'Top Gear' that he isn't interested in F1 and doesn't watch it. I believe it is important to have a team who are all passionate and surely there are other possible frontmen who would fit the bill better.
David Hayhoe, East Sussex, England
david hayhoe, uckfield, east sussex
Brilliant! No more advert breaks detracting from the action and no more stupid 'artistic' theme tune. Please, oh please, can we have The Chain by Fleetwood Mac back again? Even today it still reminds me of the definitive F1 theme tune when I hear it. And what do all these people have against Murray Walker? The guy is a legend - he even sounds like a Formula One car! So he makes a few daft comments - that's why you need somebody like Martin Brundle with his infinite knowledge of the sport to partner him. Aah, Martin, Murray and a bit of Fleetwood Mac on a Sunday - sheer unadulterated bliss!
Leanne Carrod, Bracknell, Berkshire
No more adverts ... great! Just what the sport needs - uninterrupted coverage. The loss of some of the presenters ... No. Why do we need to loose them? I see no reason unless they do not want to transfer to the Beeb. Of course if James Allen does leave, and Richard Hammond comes on board alongside Martin Brundle â what a coup! Overall a good move, but it better be as good as ITV's coverage including web-site and broadcasts, only mins the adverts, otherwise what was the point?
Ross Dilnot, Milton Keynes, England
My first reaction was of sheer delight, NO more adverts!!!!!!!!!!!! But then I remembered the very lacklustre coverage we got from the Beeb, with very little of the all important Qualifying/Race build up, the annoying chopping and changing and channel hopping of the coverage to fit in with other programmes etc, etc. I just hope the Beeb use the digital technology that wasnât available over a decade ago and provide us with something as half as good as ITV. PS Martin Brundle is a must!!!!!
Greg Roberts, Bridgend, UK
It seems to be having-a-go-at-James-Allen season on The Times website. I think it's totally unfair. I find his commentary exciting and lively and insightful. He's a great team with Martin Brundel -- the two are wonderfully complementary.
Curious what the BBC is going to do next year. But James Allen: you're great, guy. Don't listen to all the mean people on this page.
Dean, London,
A change is a good as a rest. Bernie is on the money with this one.
Perhaps we will get it in HD?
I hope they keep Martin Brundle too and use The Chain again.
Proper coverage of Friday practise would be nice. The BBC can use it's extra Freeview channels like they do for MotoGP qualifying - Something ITV have failed to do.
I do hope Moto GP is continued on BBC.
Suzie Perry doing the grid walk?
JRK, Woking, UK
Great new for all of you over in the old dart, we in Australia will still have to watch the race via Ch 10, who bombard us with ads, and even when the race is run at 7.15 pm ( Melbourne time) as it is this week from Malaysia, we have to wait until 11pm to see it full of ads.
The network treat us with contempt, the only time we get to see the race and the build up is when it is run here, and that may not be for much longer.
And yes please keep Martin Brundle.
Chris Page, Melbourne, Astralia
I can't say I would be too upset to see James Allen go (sorry James) but I would be devastated if Martin Brundel doesn't make the change to the BBC. I will not waste any tears over the useless Steve Ryder either. I would request that the BBC do as good a job with their Formula 1 website as ITV do. It's by far and away the most comprehensive F1 website there is. By the way, if you are looking for a new reporter, just let me know!
Emma Aitken, Solihull, England
Gosh and for all these years I thought it was just me who thought Mr Allen was awful. Uninterrupted coverage Great
GFW, Bromsgrove,
I really think the BBC can bring back F1 to 'home'. 12 years is a long time and technology has changed dramatically - so let the public discount the Murray & James format immediately and allow them to 'bring it on'. I do not particularly like Steve Rider as a presenter since his move to ITV and his involvement in F1 - my recordings of previous GP's shows a man who looks rather smug and is too full of himself. I think Martin Brundle would make an excellent anchorperson and Maurice Hamilton (no relation btw - :) ) woud be a good co-presenter. Although he does have a face for radio and maybe that is his forte - soz Mo! I will be glad of the commercial-free aspect and would welcome not seeing the plugs for a named sponsor like Honda or the insurance company with the irritating chickens or whatever. However this pans out, I think the BBC should make sure they do not lose it again and I had a worrying period a few years ago when I thought SKY were giving too much airtime to the GP's....
Nick, Hereford, England
Great News - no more adds, "The Chain" and lets some Murray Walker
Stuart, Cumbria,
I so agree with Mark - Gloucester and cant wait for F1 to be without James Allen, he is the most annoying person in the sport, at least we can watch all races without James Allens "Scenarios", which are usually non fruitful anyway...Hopefully Martin Brundle will be retained as he is brilliant. It would be sad not to see Louise Goodman as she is good in the pits and drivers always have time for her....Well done to the BBC!
Ceri Edwards, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales UK
Thank goodness that Bernie Ecclestone has finally wised up to changing F1 coverage from ITV to BBC. Those presenters/commentators were fast past their sell by date within their first year of covering motorsport.
Please bring the following people into the equation on the BBC regarding commentary and most importantly intelligence onto our TV sets whilst broadcasting F1on terrestial TV in 2009 which is desperately needed after brain fade in the ITV coverage over the last 3? years, into the package that BBC are offering us.
Peter Windsor (who does a superb job for Speed Channel in the US), John Watson, Ben someone or other, who has worked with JW for a long time as well humour from David Hobbs. Front man/woman, well, I would recommend John Watson. I should be putting forward a woman for the job but I cannot think of anyone appropriate to be honest!
Shame, we have been very short changed of a wonderful and exciting sport whilst F1 was being shown on ITV, thank BE for finally waking up.
Pamela Rowe, Guildford, England
If Murray won't do it, get Ben Edwards up there with Martin Brundle. He needs something to do when A1 isn't on it weird schedule.
Michael, Nashville, TN, USA
The BBC must, absolutely MUST, bring back The Chain. It still sends a shiver of anticipation down my spine. ITV really bombed with its theme tunes.
And please, can we have a commentator who speaks English. The delight of less-than-interesting sports has always been the English Gentleman commentator.
Ahmed, London,
i think it will be a good switch only if the whole entrie commentary team stay as they make the show more interesting they bring more to the show that what other commentators.
Lou Goodman - relationship with drivers and backstage interviews
Martin Brundle - insite knowledge on f1
although we are interested in f1 they do actually make the show bigger
Estelle Woods, leicester, UK
Bring back the cricket to BBC- and the theme too!
raymond, the norf, uk
Sounds like a good switch, but BBC bosses please, please secure Martin Brundle's services to F1 coverage....he's the only one who actually knows what he's talking about !!
Oh....and please keep Murray Walker in retirement. I'd rather listen to Five Live commentary than his voice droning on.
Len, Maidstone,
I'd be delighted to think every penny of my licence fee is going on bringing F1 home to the BBC.
It's a great opportunity to ditch "lead" commentator James Allen, please BBC try to entice John Watson back to the commentator's seat he occupied on Eurosport years ago, ideally alongside Martin Brundle. His then sidekick Ben Edwards would still easily surpass Allen. Just don't go knocking Jonathan Palmer's door...
Ad breaks haven't been such an issue with the live timing now available through the official F1 website, but I can't forget San Marino 2005, when ITV went to a break which finished after the last lap had started. It was a pivotal performance in Alonso's first championship-winning season, holding off immense pressure from Schumacher right to the line.
ITV's pre-race build up will be hard to beat, Steve Ryder's appointment really underlined the importance of this part of the coverage.
Lastly, goodbye to ITV's ranking soap operas as more important than F1...
Barry McWilliams, Belfast, N Ireland
Don't underestimate the effectiveness of Lou Goodman. If the BBC drops her, we will witness a steady drop in drivers' willingness to be interviewed when they have just returned from a retirement inducing incident. Louise gets in there and they are willing to comment. She is liked because she has the right outlook. Getting superstars to talk to you when they are already wound up is an art - Lou has it - many don't.
Ian VCatley, Poole, Dorset UK
PS. from Pamela - I have been listening, as I would expect any discerning viewer of F1 would do so, to BBC Radio 5 Live whilst looking at ITV1 for the Grand Prix coverage. Maybe I should recommend Maurice Hamilton for the presenter's job?
Pamela Rowe, Guildford, England
think it's great thats it;s coming back no more adverts great! just need to bring back the walker to do the commentary,
Rebecca, Brighton,
Please keep Mr Brundle, i hope we will still get the full coverage of qually etc and it wont get shifted for Eastenders or repeats.
ashley, telford, uk
The best news I've heard all year! Please lose James Allen, Louise Goodman and Mark 'boring' Blundell. I just hope it has more coverage than in the previous BBC era and hopefully the BBC will not dumb down anymore. With regard to the commentating, how about sharing it with 5live simultaniously...
Philip Blackford, Sussex, UK
At long last F1 back where it belongs, no more advert, no sticking the qualifying on other channels out the way (ITV2,3,4).
Please bring back The Chain, its motor racing's theme tune.
Just one big ask of the Beeb, please no Suzie Perry, she ruins Moto GP.
Sarah Gordon
Northamptonshiire
Sarah Gordon, Sywell, Nortants
At last, the end of the adverts, (hopefully) the dropping of the inane James Allen, and the restoration of the 'real' F1 theme tune. Hope Brundle is retained as he is one of the few bits of the current system that I like.
Roll on next year, proper coverage and, with a bit of luck, a British defending champion.
Mark, Gloucester,
May be they can move the idiot Charlie Cox from MotoGP to F1 commentary.
Jay, Reading, UK
will I be able to watch it outside the UK?? hope the BBC sort this out with the iplayer
mrs ess, madrid,
I imagine ITV broke the deal as it is expensive TV for them and they have been having poor finances for some time now. I think ITV did a far better job than was expected but I will look forward to no ad breaks.
Steve, Grayshott, Surrey
I'm disappointed. I like ITV's coverage and presenters.
However, if Martin Brundle switches to BBC (and if Steve Rider was to return) that would keep me happy.
Whatever happens, I hope the BBC don't let Gary Lineker loose on it.
John W, Gatwick, UK
Great, no adverts but then no superb commentary by James Allen and Martin Brundle either. I'd rather live with the adverts than lose this quality commentating. I just wish somebody smart at the BBC snaps them up (in fact the whole ITV team)
Ross
Ross Greville, Talgarth, Wales,
Lets get Mr Walker out of retirement to commentate.
Just a one off if he is up to it.
On second thoughts maybe not it might be bad for his health if the brits are doing well and he gets too excited. (apoligies if your reading this Mr Walker). I still think you were/are the best, you were MR Grand Prix for me. Slip ups and excitment and the odd Murrayism!!! All made for great Sunday afternoons on the BBC.
Steve Thompson, Bolton, UK
I'm hoping that they will poach Martin Brundle from the ITV team. His honest and forthright views are refreshing, and his knowledge about F1 in front of, and behind the scenes gives him a unique outlook which adds an extra dimension to his commentary.
Lee Richards, Teesside, United Kingdom
Great news, lets hope they get some new commentators to replace the dull and flat coverage we have to listen to.
Ben Hollings, Sheffield, UK
Excellent news. Now BBC needs to get the Champions League and then I will gladly pay licence, rather than grumbily pay for rubbish like Eastenders. In fact they should show Eastenders less, like as a daytime program because I'm never usually in around daytime.
Jamie, Preston, England
Can we have the music back too???!!!
Bom, bom, bom, bom, bom, bom bom bom bom bommmm
YEAH !!
carol, Leicester, UK
Bring Brundle, get Gabby Logan in charge an dump the rest,
RDB, Welwyn Garden City, Herts
Be good if the BBC supported all the major UK motorsport events including BTCC and its support races.
DickW, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
thank God, no more shots of the garage, no more off screen interviews, no more sycophantic drivel from Messr's Brundle and Allen and hopefully no more background musak to drown out the sound of those wonderfull F1 Engines - PLEASE BBC TURN UP THE VOLUME - less talk, more screaming engines for us petrolheads, I hope we can also have more over the shoulder shots of the drivers, if we need to see the pits split the screen, lets hope the good ole Beeb has more imagination than ITV who consistently lose the plot through lack of atmosphere. Well done BEEB.
David Dix, swansea, UK
Great, the only proviso - Martin Brundle.
William, London, UK
ITV have done well but one hopes that this will lead to more balanced commentary and less of the Lewis Hamilton show
alan burden, mijas pueblo, España
Excellent news. The ads on ITV drive me mad!
Hopefully we also won't to suffer the views of 'celebs' like the Osbournes. I don't give a damn what Kelly thinks of F1
paul, london, uk
Richard Nunney +1!
Rob, Brum, UK
Best of all, no more James Allen!
Fuchsia, Leeds,
How many millions did our pampered public money sponsored BBC waste on this most boring of sports?
Alan, Chigwell,
This is great news - I'd like to see Martin as commentator with Johnny Herbert as summeriser (lets get someone with a sense of humour that Martin can banter with). Retain the excellent Steve Ryder as anchor man but pleeeeaaassse ditch Mark "I was a racing driver, once" Blundell for some who actually acheived something.
Paul H, Bristol,
This is a disaster,
Can't anyone remember just how bad it was on the BBC, there was no build up, no interviews just the race!
One minute Netball etc, the next the race which i might add you could hardly hear as it sounded like it was being recorded from an Helicopter.
I think this is a big mistake and will not move F1 forward but backwards, the BBC just don't have enough free airtime to allow F1 the time and space it needs.
I feel Ecclestone has done this just because the name BBC is wider known than ITV and probably comes across better to his posh friends in monaco.
Lee Revill, Nottingham,
At last no more missing live coverage of a great sport due to adverts which has blighted our coverage for too many years hooray!!!!!!!!!!!!
jim, bridgend, uk
They need Allen, Brundle and the ITV crew, it is as simple as that. Whilst they often fill out the show with puff pieces (Bernie's daughter as a presenter!?) the actual race coverage is excellent and all that knowledge and skill would be flushed away through wholesale replacement - the loser would be the viewer.
BBC - please please do not just make it the Lewis Hamilton show.
Dave, Belfast,
12 years of pain, that is what it has been like to watch F1 on ITV.
James, London,
So does this mean we'll finally get to see formula one in HD? About time, surely the most visually suitable sport!
Steve, London,
Lack of adverts is great.
Hope they get James Allen on board, though.
Laksh, Cambridge, UK
Fantastic - let the good times roll!!
Mike Volans, Newark, UK
Hopefully not like Moto GP - in whch the raqce is shown unless hockey happens to be on.
And the ITV coverage has been great - excellent commentry team, coverage of qualie, interviews etc etc.
I'd rather have good coverage and put up with breaks, than have lip-service coverage.
And I'd rather it wasn't license fees paying for it.
ws, Manchester,
It would be interesting to see if this deal has anything to do with Martin Brundle's 2007 Times articles reagrding the spying fiasco of last year, which so upset the FIA.
Anyhow, I'd love to see Martin carry on over to the BBC. He's been excellent on ITV. I'd also love to see the back of James Allen, who is simply awful. Maybe someone like Simon Taylor could step in comfortably. Or maybe just Martin B and Mark Blundell would be the perfect combo?!?
Let hope eh.
Nick Jones, London, UK
Acorn - you're right. Looks like F1 is a moving in parallel with life generally in the UK!
Mike, Herts, UK
I wonder if the BBC will show the races on HD
if so then I will be subscribing to the overpriced service from sky
Tom, Bridgend,
I Think its great news no more worrying incase your fav driver has crashed out or broke down during the adverts.
I cant wait lets hope there's a change in commentary but keep james allan and brundle, maybe schumacher might be interested in joing the new team or damon hill. Other person could be up and coming star Andrew McWhinnie apparently he is the next Martin Brundle.
lets wait and see.
BYE.
ANDREW , Atherton, Manchester,
Oh Thank god NO MORE ADVERTS!!!!!! I love F1 always have and the worst thing to happen was for ITV to have taken it over, they said they would not have adverts but this was not so and we have had to put up with stilted breaks in races ever since!! hopefully now there will be better commentating and more focus on the UK drivers and other upcoming Teams rather than Ferrari!!! Yay for the BBC!!
Caroline, London, UK
Dear BBC please use the oportunity to promote Hi Def TV.
Stephen Bamforth, Pilley, South Yorkshire
About time too no more stupid advert breaks and annoying signature tune with padded out programme of nonsense material.
The only commentator needed is Martin Brundle, who never gets it wrong of
who is what on the track and knows what he is talking about. We can do without the screeching gibberish of James Allen.
n.l. grant, Harlow, England
Brilliant! well done BBC and F1, nothing worse than advert breaks in a fast moving sport like F1. It's been ridiculous, but I didn't realise I've had to put up with it for so long. It's also so obvious that ITV continue to sell advertising whilst the race is in progress as the more exciting the race becomes the more adverts we are subjected to! We have never had adverts in the middle of a football match or rugby match other than at half time, so why F1?
I can't wait, and yes! get back the old Fleetwood Mac theme tune.
Steve, Sittingbourne, Kent,
Thanks for spending my money on this tedium!
BBC = Usless idiots.
Gordon, Leeds,
Yessss! Now can we have Fleetwood Mac's 'The Chain' as the theme tune again? Pleease!
Sally, Bicester, Oxfordshire, UK
Before the BBC starts broadcasting Formula One they should hire ITVâs excellent commentary team, please donât give the task to John Motson â the most boring voice on television.
Brian Christley, Abergele, UK
Fantastic news,F1 back on the beeb.No adverts and with any luck the proper theme music.Well done bbc.
Mr T.I.Whaley, Derby, Derbyshire
Murray Walker was a feature of sunday afternoons when i was a kid. I suggest that he's brought out every now and then as Keith Jackson is for college football here in the USA. Maybe for the races where his commentary shines. Thinking Spa, Monaco etc.
As for the advertisements. For NASCAR it's common for the TV station to split the screen for the advertising break so the cars are still shown, but so are the adverts.
IMHO there's nothing wrong with color commentary (interviewing celebs etc), as long as it does not detract from the race itself. Not all viewers are petrol heads and creating a more rounded viewing experience should hopefully result in more viewers.
phil, Sacramento, USA
No more ad breaks, no James Allen telling us a driver is coming in for new boots!? Sounds great to me.
Gavin Searle, Swindon, Wiltshire
No Murray Walker
No Murray Walker
No Murray Walker
No Murray Walker
No Murray Walker
No ...
Have I made my point?
Emerson, Chester,
And when is cricket back on BBC 1or BBC2 ?
HRF, Zurich, Switzerland
Just to defend ITV for a moment - when they took over coverage the BBC started it's coverage 5 minutes before the start of the race and ended with the podium, provided the race did not take longer than was expected. No qualifying, no race build up, no atmosphere. On the other hand ITV blew it a couple of years ago by going to ads a couple of laps from the end of a race with Schumacker and Alonso having a right on track barny.
So long as the BBC covers the whole week end etc then bring it on - as others have said those mid race ad breaks are infuriating. Oh and please keep Brundle
Jim, southampton, UK
perfect!!!,,,now maybe i can go some small way to justify being held hostage to £140 a year for utter drivel..
hammo, biggin,
To Acorn in Southampton. Why do you watch it then, or bother to comment on this article? To the F1 fans, does this mean no adverts? HHOOOORAAAAYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope the BBC can find some objective (i.e. not founder members of the Lewis Hamilton fan club) and informed commentators - or maybe jsut give us the actual feed from the track?
Stuart, JHB, South Africa
Hopefully we can have some more objective commentary & analysis now. Two years of "Lewis Hamilton TV," is more than enough even though he is a tremendous talent.
Tanaka Chidawanyika, Canterbury,
Moto GP, British Superbikes and World superbike champoinships are all far more interesting for the spectator as the racing is more of a battle and overtaking actually occurs...
F1 is more a war of attrition or very similar to watching paint dry....
Demonix, Brizzle, avon
As exciting as NASCAR?!? The unending tedium of oval racing at it's dullest. Now had you said Moto GP or WRC then I may have agreed....
Anyway, looking forward to ad' free coverage of F1 and, as requested above, please, no Murray Walker.
Mike Farren, Manchester, England
Find a sport that most people think is tedious, predictable, and overated and you can be assured the BBC will be bidding soon. ( see Amir Khan, Rugby, FA Cup etc... ) Can't wait to see the viewing figures. Good news for Lewis Hamilton though!
Neil Hughes, Birmingham, U.K
Formula One is back where it belongs. ITV have been infuriating fans for too long with mid-race advert breaks. There is also a great opportunity to allow fans to view Friday and Saturday morning practice session through the BBC's interactive services.
It would be a travesty if the evocative "The Chain" was not re-introduced to open the coverage as it would truely provide the cherry on the cake.
James Allen should definately not be a part of the BBC's plans as his commentary is absolutely woeful. Martin Brundle is a must however as his technical insight adds much value.
Looking forward to next season already!
Well done BEEB!
Scott McNicholas, Durham,
Brilliant news.
Whoever states their dislike of Murray Walker do not have a clue. He instilled every race with a level of enthusiasm and excitement the "current lot" on ITV couldn't hope to match. They just sound as boring as tax accountants reading a finiancial report!
F1 still has a long way to go. Too many rules and regulations stiffling competition and car development etc., but this will be a big help.
It's just a shame they can't bring Murray back to commentate, or could they?......
Anon, Tewkesbury,
I hope this doesn't mean the end of the excellent Moto-GP coverage on the BBC.
Jarvis, Southend, UK
Is anyone else sick of Martin Brundle wandering about pre-race asking 'celebrities' what they think about F1? I know I am, great new that F1 is back on the beeb!!!
Ben, London,
About time it came back home to the Beeb.
It was never as good on the ITV and was always a second rate production!!At least on the Beeb we will not miss a moment of action, and there are only so many F1 Cars coming out of Helmets from Breaks you can Take!!
We should also keep the old Theme because it is F1 and everyone can identify with it .
Welcome home F1!!!!!!
Mr D G Roberts, Derby,
Finally the BBC and its protection money racket in the form of the license fee can offer some front line sports coverage.
Matt, Napoli, Italy
Fantastic News..... all we need now is Murry to complete things !
C. Fowler, Wakefield,
Call me cynical if you like, but I suspect a cosy deal between BBC & ITV. The BBC can have Formula 1 as long as ITV can hang on to what remains of terrestrial coverage of the Champions league. ITV is qutting its contract two years early so the F1 rights have hardly been snatched!
Frank Mills, Liverpool,
Would like to see the back of James Allen and Louise Goodman and the return of Murray Walker and Jim Rosenthal, PLEASE.
Barbara, Oldham, England
Fabulous news, I was so tired of all the hype, nonsense 'features' and commercial breaks on ITV. I just hope that they don't use James Allen or David Croft, they are both terrible.
Markos, Lemesos, Cyprus
Woohoo.. will this mean the end of James Allen ?
Think his best was "Look at all those cars !"
No, really James ? Cars, on a race track ? Whatever next !
I doubt the Chain will comeback though Jacky, be good if it was perhaps updated but faithful to the original ?!
Daniel, Margate, Kent, UK.
Great - just so long as they don't bring back the ranting Murray Walker.
Ken Leyland, Liverpool, U.K.
You see, you can fool all of the people all of the time. There can be no doubt that F1 is now the most boring form of motor sport there is.
It has more pettifogging regulations than you can shake a stick at and continually adds more idiotic rules to try and make it at least one tenth as exciting to watch - on television - as NASCAR or the BTCC.
Acorn, Southampton, UK
Absolutely brilliant, uninterrupted coverage thank goodness, to make it complete could we have The Chain by Fleetwood Mac as the theme tune
Jacky Hailstone, Kingston upon Hull, England
How much of our money did that cost?
Mike, Hertfordshire, UK
Wonderful! But with time left after 2009 on the ITV contract, I just wonder which clause Bernie quoted to get out of the deal...
Matthew, London, UK
Yeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssssssssssssssss!!!
No more stupid adverts!
