An emergency meeting of world motorsport will decide the fate of Max Mosley, the embattled head of its governing body, in Paris later this month after revelations of his part in a sado masochostic orgy with five prostitutes.
Mr Mosley, the son of the Fascist leader Sir Oswald Mosley, is facing growing opposition to his decision not to resign as president of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) following the publication of a video of him taking part in an orgy and bondage session in London last week.
In a joint statement issued yesterday by BMW and Mercedes Benz, the fierce Formula One rivals noted what they called the “disgraceful” content of revelations published on Sunday by The News of the World.
In the video Mr Mosley is seen spanking prostitutes and being chained. He also speaks in German during the five-hour orgy. He has since denied that there were any Nazi overtones to the episode or that he took part in role play as a concentration camp inmate. He is taking legal action against the newspaper.
“As a company we strongly distance ourselves from it,” the companies said.
Mr Mosley immediately retorted with a statement in which he chose to invoke memories of Nazi-era Germany.
“Given the history of BMW and Mercedes Benz, particularly before and during the Second World War, I fully understand why they would wish to strongly distance themselves from what they rightly describe as the disgraceful content of these publications,” he said.
“Unfortunately, they did not contact me before putting out their statement to ask whether the content was in fact true.”
The Times revealed on Wednesday that the Bahraini Royal Family had told Mr Mosley he was not welcome at this weekend’s Formula One Grand Prix in the Gulf state where his presence was considered “inappropriate”. Then yesterday a barrage of criticism was levelled at him led by four of the world’s biggest car companies.
But Mr Mosley is planning to try and tough it out. A source close to him said: “I think he’s going to fight.”
At a meeting of all 222 members of the FIA’s supreme body, the general assembly, he will effectively dare anyone to oppose him.
Mr Mosley has ruled the FIA with an iron will over the past 15 years but it is possible that the growing anger and disapproval at his conduct will yet overwhelm him.
