Kimi Raikkonen led Ferrari to a 1-2 finish in Friday's first practice session for this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix. The defending world champion who won here in 2005, clocked 1 minute 20.649 seconds to edge teammate Felipe Massa by 0.05 seconds on the 4.655-kilometer (2.892-mile) Circuit de Catalunya track.
Ferrari has dominated the first practice rounds this season, clocking the best time at all four races. Massa is coming off his first win of the season, at the Bahrain GP, while Raikkonen won the previous race in Malaysia.
McLaren's Lewis Hamilton was third, just over half a second back, with BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica in fourth — slightly under a second behind Raikkonen.
Heikki Kovolainen of McLaren rounded out the top five with a best lap time of 1:21.758.
All teams returned from a brief spring break for the first stop on the 10-race European leg of Formula One's calendar.
Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso of Renault, who has been frustrated by his car's lack of pace this season, was sixth with a time of 1:21.933. The Spanish driver won his home GP in 2006.
Super Aguri tested alongside the other 10 teams in the 90-minute morning session despite arriving in Barcelona at the last moment. The Japanese outfit has been troubled since a potential buy-out fell through, and is in discussions to secure funding to continue racing this season. Takuma Sato had the best performance for the team ahead of Anthony Davidson, but was nearly five seconds slower than Raikkonen.
Free practice continues later Friday and on Saturday morning, before qualifying determines the grid order for Sunday's race.
