Lewis Hamilton has been given a 10-place grid penalty for the French Grand Prix as a result of the pitlane crash that ended his race and that of Kimi Raikkonen during the Canadian Grand Prix today.
The punishment was handed out by FIA race stewards after they reviewed the incident in which Hamilton ran into the back of Raikkonen as the Ferrari driver was observing a red light in the pit lane on lap 18 of the race, which was eventually won by Robert Kubica.
Nico Rosberg of Williams was given the same 10-place drop on the grid after he ran into the back of Hamilton’s McLaren Mercedes in the same incident.
Hamilton had looked on course to repeat last season's victory in Montreal, the first of his career, having made a sensational start from pole position in his McLaren.
But having opened up a sizeable gap of around six seconds, the safety car was brought out to allow marshals to remove the Force India car of Adrian Sutil which had caught fire after being retired at the side of the track.
The field then bunched up behind the safety car, with most of the front-runners seizing on the opportunity under yellow flags to dive into the pits for new tyres on lap 18 and Hamilton appeared to panic when he saw his race lead vanishing as Robert Kubica and Raikkonen both made their exit from their respective garages ahead of him. The Ferrari and BMW Sauber drivers both then stopped at a red light, awaiting the all-clear to rejoin the track from pitlane, a signal that a flustered Hamilton clearly did not see as he ploughed into the back of Raikkonen’s car, removing both drivers from the race.
Hamilton recorded the first Formula One victory of his career at Montreal last year, but there was to be no repeat this time, his one saving grace being that he had also removed his main rival for this year's title - and last season's world champion - in the same incident.
Kubica went on to claim his maiden victory and the lead in the drivers’ championship in the process. The Pole survived a horrendous crash at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve 12 months ago but drove a superb race to take full advantage of his rivals' failings.
It was a BMW Sauber one-two as Nick Heidfeld claimed the runners-up spot for the second year in a row. The drama also cleared the way for Scotland’s David Coulthard to score his first points of the season with an invaluable third-place finish to ease the pressure on his seat at Red Bull Racing.
Results: 1. Robert Kubica (POL/BMW Sauber) 1hr 36min 24.447sec, 2. Nick Heidfeld (GER/BMW Sauber) at 16.495sec, 3. David Coulthard (GBR/Red Bull) 23.352, 4. Timo Glock (GER/Toyota) 42.627, 5. I don't think it's fair to criticise him unless you've been in the same situation! It being a competition, he was naturally hugely focused on the colourful cars of two rivals a few yards away, speeding away from him, not on a tiny red light in the distance.
iain, bedford, uk
Removing Raikkonen during the crash is Hamilton's one saving grace? I am sure even Hamilton won't agree with you. What happens to sportsmanship? Come on, Times, you can do better than producing this! Don't let Hamilton fever cloud your judgment. I am not a Finn but I agree with Alex.
Sharon Lam, Leatherhead, England
Namby Pamby US saftey car rules are destroying F1. Why not continue the race under yellow flags until the danger is cleared? This overuse of the safety car wrecks team tactics, gives unwarranted advantage to drivers who made earlier mistakes (Hamilton in the last race included), and is dangerous.
Graham, Pattaya, Thailand
Red light in a motor race - great idea, why not have pedestrian crossings as well?? Get rid of the safety car (stupid american idea anyway) and let the race go on under yellow flags until the danger is cleared. LH made a mistake, so what, the situation shouldn't have arisen in the first place!
Graham, Pattaya, Thailand
It was typical Afrikan driving which I see every day on our roads in South Afrika.................... ignore the traffic lights !!!
Seriously though ,Lewis is a fantatastic driver , but his team should sit him down with a team of experts for a few days and go over all the rules with him .......
john, johannesburg, south africa
Yesterday's accident clearly shows that Hamilton is still a rookie whether you accept it or not. F1's greatest drivers always take into consideration the lights at the end of the pit lane...Kubica is still young and he isn't such a bad rookie as Hamilton
Alistair, Malta,
Is no one in the least bit interested after 50 posts that Raikkonen (unassuming Finn, current champion) was unable to score any points thanks to Hamilton's error. First time I've seen anything but blind nationalism from my countrymen though, which is a step forward.
Alex, Turku, Finland
Spanish or otherwise, there's a serious Anti-Hamilton Brigade here. You don't have to like him but some of these comments are not only aggressive but just a little stupid. He made a silly mistake (Nico Rosberg also). He said sorry to Kimi (who escaped after taking Sutil out in Monaco). Big deal!
Matt Black, London, UK
For someone who is meant to be at the top of his game, Lewis should not have made such a stupid mistake. Raikkonen did not swerve to miss Kubica, he simply pulled to one side in order to pull in front of him to gain track position. You were obviously watching a totally different race to me yesterday
Steph, Gloucester,
Don't beat yourself up about it Lewis, Magistrates hear something like it every day from hot-footed 'rookie' drivers..."I'm sorry, but I just didn't see the red lights, I'm afraid". But don't be upset if Ron takes your expensive toys away from you, and gives them back to Pedro!
S. Barraclough, Huddersfield, W. Yorkshire
That track condition was a disgrace. The safety car rule is absurd.Drivers should keep their time advantage.
The pit lane was a fiasco and clearly led to confusion.
Lewis Hamilton will prove to be the greatest driver of all time.
You guys just can't cope with that fact.
Best of luck Lewis!!
James Currie, London, U.K
I wish I made a few mistakes at work as LH does! 8 poles in 1 1/2 years at the top (never out of the top 3) where the best push the limits. His team mate (also highly rated) has 15 points. He has score 72% of the McClaren team points - and yesterday he made a silly mistake. Wow.
Andy Wicks, Bexleyheath, United Kingdom
Raikkonen did exactly what Hamilton did. He swerved to the left of the car in front of him and both he and Kubica braked. Hamilton however failed to brake on time so hit Raikkonen in the rear. Also, he did not ignore the Finn. He tapped him on the back in a gesture of apology.
Freddy, Manila,
Simon, face it,Lewis blew it. If he admits he didn't see the red light; he either needs glasses or he is inmature and impatient.
Andy, Lewis had the pole! he blew it in China and had a chance in Brazil to be champion. Alonso and his fans didn't do a thing. The Spaniards are not the only bloggers.
nicki, , palm springs, california, usa
It's funny to see how the British try desperately to defend their hero of the day. But here there are no excuses - Hamilton made a silly rookie mistake and it's not the first time. Sure, he may be very fast - but it takes more than speed to become a world champ. Kubica is a far more mature driver.
andy, zurich, switzerland
Hamilton, clearly a fabulous driver but why doesn't he spend some of his money understanding PR. His comments after his mistake were so childish. The response ahould have been " Sorry" I made a mistake and I'm really sorry that I took out Kimi" instead of blustering about how he was "cruising"
Graham Ovens, Bristol,
I amazed that people are talking about Anti Hamilton. All there is in the news is how great he is, But his dream luck is over, he is not a god as people make him to be. He is just a driver.
I think if ITV would take him down from the palace they have been building him, he might think one extra time.
Jesper, New York / Copenhagen, USA / Denmark
The worst driving I have seen in F1 in many years.
Tom, Perth, Oz
the times obviously does not believe in objective reporting "flustered" "and clearly did not see". I would rather watch the Grand Prix on mute than listen to biased views of James allan and martin brundle
Dumisani Nkhumalo, Johannesburg, the Republic of South Africa
Congratulations to BMW team for this fantastic result, and also to Glock, great race!!
Alejandro, Madrid, Spain
I haven't read that many anti-ham comments from Spain but from all over the world.
Still, de la Rosa said that as they are so low in the cars (the drivers heads) the rear wings of the cars in front might have prevented him fom seing the red light.
I know it's not an excuse but it could explain it.
El Ponso, Sada, Spain
Robert, thank You so much!
We enjoyed the race thanks to your brilliant performance. We are proud to be Polish tonight! Niech moc będzie z Tobą!

Lewis wants to be the F1 World Champion! Driving like that, are you kidding me?
Jayson, Seattle, US
Vicky from queseda knows nothing about F1 you plainly dislike both Schumi and Alonso with nine world championships between them that is greatness not no world championships. Supporting a driver does not involve denigrating great champions. maclaren alonso and hamilton jointly through it away last yr
stephen, newcastle, england
Ignore Spanish comments, Andy?
Alonso's quit was because of a 'mechanical' stuff not a rush and silly driving because 'I want to be No 1 forever'.
This case of sour grapes will last until LH becomes a true sportsman (Alonso robbed me Monaco 2007, things like that...).
Sylvia, Barcelona, Spain
Oh Lewis, how inconsiderate of you. Instead of concentrating on deliberately hitting Kimi, you should've gone for both Kimi and Robert, the target was big enough, you eagle-eyed you.
But don't worry, you are still GOAT, God, a legend. What modesty. Humbleness. Classy behaviour today as well.
Mateusz, Krakow, Poland
How much more childish can the F1 posts here get ?! Those that cannot admit that LH is a fantastic young driver are simply in denial Sure he makes mistakes as do all the others. Terrible thing jealousy!!!
chris , copenhagen , Denmark
These anti-Hamilton comments are getting boring. Yes he made a mistake today, no it doesn't mean he lacks maturity, or drives like an amateur. If some of you had watched Formula One for the last 30 years you'd know that *all* of the top drivers have made mistakes even, dare I say it, Alonso!
Stephen, Canterbury, UK
Was I watching a different Grand Prix to the rest of you Spanish residents? Pure and simple Lewis made a mistake, that is all it was. Alonso was a mardy dirty cheat all last season and was outdone by a better quality driver. He is turning into another Schumacher - dirty cheat. Get a life
Vicky, Quesada, Spain
One day he will grow up and one day he may even be called a great driver. Not seeing a RED light is just amaturish, being penalised 10 places is the least, he shloud have been disqualified for the next race. These are the top of the driver league and making daft errors is innexcusable.
Loris, Milan, Italy
Dear Andy,
talking about sour grapes, Lewis was the one making nasty comments about Fernando all winter. He claims Fernando tought him how to not behave as a driver. For sure FA does not crash into his rivals when being in the pit lane. Actually FA let LH lap him in a very clean way in Monaco.
Pau, Barcelona,
fantastic result from Kubica!!! Great race which proves that Hamillton is still not experienced and mature driver. He still drives like a trainee and needs a lot more races to prove his greatness.
So far Kubica is The Leader with BMW 17 points ahead of McLaren....
dss, London,
Unfortunate, but lucky that no one was injured in the mess. LH still shows a certain lack of judgment - that will come with a little more age and experience.
A 10 place starting penalty in France will remind him. I suspect the race might have been turning away from him just before the stop
Bob, Cincinnati,
Once again we see a good race ruined by poor track management. Why on earth did they need to bring out the so called safety car and destroy a racing spectacle? If they can't handle trivial issues like cars parked up on the verge then perhaps its time to remove this circuit from the GP series.
John, Birmingham, UK
fortunately the stewards hit swiftly and well: 10 place grid penalty in France. So much for the vastly overrated (especially by himself) LH.
Paolo, Paris, France
That was amazing performance Robert!! Just keep going!!! You can be the Champion even this year!!!
David, London,
Robert Kubica is the Best and I've got no more to say :D
Paweł, Cracow, Poland
It's not really that Lewis gave a win to Robert! Robert dis his best all the time, he was second & after the lewis & kimi crash he had to make up more about 21 sec to be able to go for the 2nd pit stop without loosing the position, so he had to drove very quickly, making up 2 sec on the lap.
Ania, Krakow, Poland
hamilton well deserves his 10 place penalty...he deliberately turned towards kimi and i hope he doesnt score any points in france
eph, guildford,
Hope Hamilton will be disqualified and prevent from racing in the next GP. That's what he deserves.
Stefano, London, UK
Do the Spanish actually watch the races they comment on?
Kimi only just avoided the car in front be swerving left at the last moment. Lewis did the same but there was no more room so hit Kimi. Then another car did exactly the same and went into the back of Lewis.
Great race from BMW and Kubica.
Rob, Birmingham, UK
Great job Robert... we're waiting for you to drive a red car!
sorry... I still belive that Lewis could be the best... but maybe he need to be aware of what he is doing when he drive a F1 car!
Pierpa, Cagliari, Sardegna , Italy
Robert, thank YOU for the brilliant performance we enjoyed so much! We are proud to be Polish tonight and it has nothing to do with football ;)
Congratulations and our fingers constantly crossed for You!
Paulina&Tomasz
Paulina&Tomasz, London now, Poland/UK
The Spanish anti-Hamilton brigade is tedious. He is a talented young driver and competitive, Alonso wanted him to bow down last season and he refused. Get over it.
adam, valencia, spain
It could easily be argued LH was a class apart over the weekend. Had it not been for the pitlane incident, he would most likely have gone on to win comfortably.
Let's not forget about Kimi in Monaco - I suppose he was "flustered" too?
Still, there's a certain irony to it all, as Tim pointed out!
Simon, London, UK
So, when he's on pole, or leading the race he's "sensational" (your word)....but when he's rear-ending a competitor because of bad eye-sight and stupidity, then it's perfectly OK for him to "panic". What happened to balanced reporting?
Joe, USA
Joe Gay, Charlotte, USA
Disgraceful! More that evident that Lewis swerved to take Kimi out, having been legged over by both Kubica and him in the pits. Kimi was the fastest man on track - despite all the hype about Lewis doing a "blistering" 18 laps on softer tyres (don't forget!) - and Lewis only had 1 solution! Childish
Bruno, London, UK
More negative comments from Spain. Rosberg also ran into the back of Hamilton Massa was disqualified from last year's Canadian race for going through the red light Raikkonen had a shocker in Monaco, knocking Sutil out of 4th place did you feel the need to comment about any of these?
Matt Black, London, UK
Have you seen the crash in tv? When Lewis sees he is going to crash he decides to turn left and bump Kimi instead of the other car.
Then he turns back to avoid seeing Kimi walking aside him.
And finally when he's in McL box he put his hand over the camera that was filming him.
What a gentelman!
Francisco, Madrid, Spain
Be sure to ignore all comments about Lewis Hamilton that come from Spain. How long can one case of sour grapes last? What happened to Alonso in this race? Who's perfect?
Andy, London,
well we all known that poster boy admires ayrton and wishes to emulate him and now we see how much.. there are distinct similarities and differences between the two though.
first the difference, ayrton had talent.
now the similarity, ayrton also crashed into rivals to stop them scoring points.
peter jones, moscow,
LH lost his temper again, "flustered", yes. When he goes 1 and alone he keeps cool but when his rivals are next to him and luck is not of his side...
Today, we have watched a true and humble F1 number 1. Congratulations Kubica!. I wish we can see you and Alonso in Ferrari or BMW in a short time.
Sylvia, Barcelona, Spain
At least Raikkonen went out too!
Stupid mistake - but his qualifying and initial 18 laps were blistering
He'll still top the Champioinship at the end........
James, Newmarket, UK
hupps another mistake of the best rookie ever!
he didn´t see what? who put that red light there??
Dennis, No worries, In ten or fifteen years he will show the required level of maturity to manage consistently these type of situations
greg, frankfurt,
To ignore a red light and take out another driver is hardly " a saving grace" Hamilton needs to stop believing the hype and grow up
Bess, Gandia, Spain
Oops! Perhaps he shouldn't have made a joke about his dad crashing a car at 30mph?
Tim, Preston,
