A bitterly disappointed Lewis Hamilton admitted that he had taken too big a risk at the start of the Japanese Grand Prix, leaving even the British driver’s fans wondering whether he has the temperament required to close out the biggest championship of all.
In his worst case of “red mist” in two seasons in Formula One, Hamilton, who was on pole, could not resist a rash counter-attack on Kimi Raikkonen after the Ferrari got ahead of him at the start. Even though Raikkonen had no realistic World Championship chances of his own, Hamilton lunged past, outbraked himself and was penalised for forcing the Finn off the track at the first corner.
“What can I say? I just didn’t get the best getaway,” Hamilton, who finished twelfth and had his lead over Felipe Massa cut by two points to five with two races left, said. “I went down the inside and locked up and went straight on. If I was doing it again, I’d obviously do it a bit different. But I haven’t watched it, so I don’t know exactly how it went so wrong. My brakes were cold, for sure — it was just too much of a risk.”
The resultant drive-through penalty was greeted with dismay by McLaren and Hamilton. He and the team believe that he is being picked on by FIA stewards this season and Hamilton was furious when he was told by his pitwall team that he would have to come in. “I don’t understand why I got a penalty,” he said. “You’ve seen many races where people have gone to Turn 1, but gone straight on. I didn’t hit anyone or cause anyone any danger or gain an advantage, so I don’t understand it.”
The most frustrating element of Hamilton’s rush of blood was that Massa was well behind him at that point. But it was not long before Hamilton was tangling with the second Ferrari, too. Having all but wrecked his tyres trying to outbrake Raikkonen, which made an early pit-stop inevitable, he attacked Massa on the next lap as the championship rivals ran sixth and seventh. On this occasion, it was Massa who appeared to make the mistake, putting Hamilton’s car into a spin that dropped the Briton to last place. Hamilton accused the Brazilian of a deliberate act, which Massa denied.
Either way, Hamilton had taken another arguably unnecessary risk that resulted in damage to his car. A dreadful afternoon at the Fuji Speedway left him out of the points while Massa was classified seventh. The race was won by Fernando Alonso, of Renault — his second victory in succession — from Robert Kubica, of BMW Sauber, who is 12 points off the lead, with Raikkonen third.
Despite his disappointment, Hamilton was able to see the bright side as he heads to China for the penultimate race on Sunday. “We are still leading and we are still going to win,” he said. “My belief is as strong as ever. Next race, we have to make sure we are just as competitive and make sure we win.”
In a classic piece of Formula One theatre, Alonso, Raikkonen and Kubica were asked whether they believed that Hamilton had been justly punished. While Kubica and Raikkonen said they did not know because they had not seen the incident in full, the same could not be said of Alonso. Hamilton’s former McLaren team-mate, with whom he fell out bitterly last season, had no doubt that the stewards were right.
“I agree,” Alonso said.

Watched China Qualy & just read these comments. I've watched F1 since the 60's. There have been many, many incidents over the years wthout penalties, but they often ended in the death of drivers. LH should remember that.
LH still the best driver out there, the only one with the bottle to try to win!
Martin David Eschle, Sheffield, England
Lewis will learn from this mistake & it will make him a more rounded driver. Massa has improved markedly this year, but it should be remembered that he needed a lot of help from his engineer to achieve this, as opposed to Kime, Lewis, and Fernando, who started from a higher baseline.....
Andrew, Reading, UK
Men don't need their Daddy looking after them in the pits. Why is he always there ? Does he not think the camera will get enough shots of him in the stands ?
Steven, London,
LH pole - bad starts! Dont control emotions again... Pour boy. Massa fãs laughs!!!!
Peter , Sacramento, USA
It is such a shame that either of these two average drivers like Massa and Hamilton are the main champioship contenders, 79 and 84 points... how poor is that??
As Martin Brundle said after the grand prix, alonso is the best all round the grid and he should be driving either a Ferrari or a Mclaren.
lewis 2nd forever!!!, london , uk
2007, FA was the spoilt child; now Massa &Ferrari are the mean ones.I can't imagine what campaign British media will make when FA signes Ferrari up.
FA's set ups weren't significant; he hadn't improved McL performance. Funny twist of fate, now his "uncertain" talent has turned him into WC referee.
Sylvia, Barcelona, Spain
Hamilton has proved many times over that he is not as good as he thinks he is. Schumaker was the best and probably still would be if he came back. And Alonso is without a doubt the best driver by some way now, irrespective of what he drives.
john, kouvola, finland
Hamilton is too big for his own boots. He is on his way loosing this WDC too. You only need to take a look at the Japanese GP. Luckily for him Massa is cracking under pressure too. Last year it was Kimi. It can very well be Robert Kubica this year. Drivers who let their driving do the talking
Gilraen Ivorwen, Netherlands,
this is hilarious.....more anti-ferrari and anti-FIA banter....LH is over-hyped and over-rated - FACT....the only thing more entertaining than watching him blow again in the last couple of races will be to watch you folks blame FIA and Ferrari
Glenn, London, UK
Charles, the reason Micheal Schumacher would have won, is that if he had committed all three offenses in this race, he would not have been penalised. Everyone is complaining about Hamilton being a "Dirty" driver, well I'd have to say he's got nothing on Schuey!
John Beckmann, Brentford, UK
Put simply, it was an aggresive and needless move in the first corner by LH, one which Schumacher would have made in his days, in order to win a GP or take out his rivals at any cost. I would not be surprised if he decided to drive into Massa in Shanghai or Brazil.
Kevin Yeung, Hong Kong,
Lewis reminds me of "Maverick", Tom Cruise's character in the movie Top Gun. He can be the best, but there's something just holding him back. Here's hoping he can get it together for the last races of the season!
Come on Mr Hamilton, England's racing pride rests on your shoulders!
Ben Adamson, Manchester, UK
It was a shame for Lewis, and I felt sorry for him, as he admitted he made an error, but In Formula 1 it is so fast and furious, that drivers can so easily make mistakes, which can mean that others gain an advantage sometimes as quick a flash. Micro seconds are all important in F1.
Jo Sparkes, Dereham Norfolk, UK
There is an urgent need to come clear on the rules when , in the name of aggression, one driver pushes another on to the gravel. The races of 2008 should be reviewed to see if any pattern emerges. Raikkonen has been the loser this year having been pushed onto gravel too many times.
Ramanan, Mysore, India
I am an Alonso supporter but I must disagree about the drive through penalty imposed on Hamilton. The FIA stewards are re-writing the rule book ad hoc just to demote Hamilton and help out Massa, in the same way that they went against Alonso and favoured Hamilton last year. KR WDC may become RK WDC.
Michel Angstadt, Serranillos del Valle, (Madrid) Spain
Again more rubbish decisions being made, it seems the stuards will do anything to stop Hamilton winning, Massa again benifits from poor decisons, he caused two crashed but was still promoted a place at the end, what is going on? Lewis is the fastest driver and gets penalised for being British.
Tom , Ashford, UK
If he was as succesful in collecting points as he is at collecting penalties Hamilton would have been Champion already in July...
Ivan Bukov, Newcastle,
Ham just made a complete fool of himself - dismissing criticism of him being overly agressive and saying how well balanced he was.... and than doing just EXACT opposite in the first corner and then again at the turn 10.... He lost the last bit of respect he had among other drivers and teams.
Kris, Ottawa, Canada
Alonso is by far the best driver on the circus. I'd really like to see Hamilton with Alonson's car.
paulo koenig, porto alegre , brazil
People need to stop automatically supporting a driver just because he happens to be British. The way he treated Alonso when he was his teammate was appalling, and I'm glad Alonso has now finally "got his mojo" back with Renault. Hamilton is a reckless driver, and he needs to grow up.
Yvonne, Doncaster, UK
Great example of taking greed for ambition. Hamilton is more greedy than ambitious, as he showed yesterday. He is a great pilot, but far too agressive to be sporty. It really was an ugly move when in the final lap he tried to press Alonso. No wonder he has no friends. He deserves to lose again
Hyde, oxford, United Kingdom
I do not understand the F1 rules.Could I be a steward please.
ernie, Nanning,
A penalty for "forcing a driver off" by getting to a bit of tarmac first - ludicrous. Giving Bourdais a penalty was the final straw. Will no longer follow F1, stupid rules exercised by stupid people.
I will stick to MotoGP, riders actually lean on eachother without penalty. Exciting and fair!
John, Hastings,
Who is top of the league? Hamilton. Where's Alonso in the grand scheme of things? Lewis is a winner - he doesn't want to come 2nd, he doesn't want to come 3rd, he wants to win - this mentality has helped get him to the top of the table & with a bit of fine tuning and some maturing, he can stay there
Gavin, Caernrfon,
Have been watching F1 for 22 years, wow where has the time gone?!
I like LH and do not question his talent he is good for F1. His mind set should have been to finish ahead of Massa thats all. At the start he should of kept postion, his overtake places questions on his judgement under pressure.
Jay, Nhants, England
Hamilton behaved like a spoilt child. It is the manner in which he's behaved since he came into F1; this incident focuses people's attention on it, but it's been there all the time. He needs to lose the chip on his shoulder and wise up. Possibbly fit an 'engage brain' button on his steering wheel?
Bart Richins, Deal, UK
I have been a fan of Lewis Hamilton for many years and yet last season he did seem to choke when crunch time came. Now similar things appear to be happening and I have an awful feeling events could lead to the same conclusion.
David Webb, Bournemouth, England
Never mind Hamilton's mistakes, I just have to larf at Massa every time I see him I think I'm seeing a reincarnation of Hervé Villechaize .(thats the little guy who played Nick Nack in the man with the Golden Gun) Hillarious, and impossible to take seriously.
Will, Hannover, Germany
"LH is a disgrace that will cover UK with shame for years to come." - Alonso's Miracles, Madrid, ESPAÑA, hombre!!
But nothing compared to stealing, cheating and blackmail eh? I feel for you...
Peter Jones, London, England
Hamilton won't win a championship, let alone become a multiple champion unless he can learn to control his emotions.
All the recent greats, Senna, Prost, Schumacher, were human computers in the pit, even if they weren't always outside of it.
Stay cool, or forever stay second.
Simon , London, UK
Spoiled brat Hamilton chokes again. He crashes into Raikonen(remember him doing the same in the pit lane?),behaves poorly and blames everyone else except himself. He is so arrogant he thinks the title should be his, just because he drives. No wonder the stewards and other drivers can't stand him.
C.Elder, Paris, France
One minute he's going to be conservative and just go for points and then he's driving overs off the road and wrecking his own race and now McLaren have taken a U-Turn on their approach! And Saying Massa made him spin deliberately is just pathetic.
Daniel, Cheltenham, UK
i will be so glad and sooooo relieved when 'poster boy' has finally thrown away the championship again. always been a mclaren fan and never a fan of a marketing gimmick. put a good driver in the car. put in andy priaulx, oh you cant because the sponsors want a 'face'. sad sad sad, so very british
peter jones, moscow,
Schumachers record of 7 titles is imminently beatable - LH 07, how about getting just one L and/or a little humility along the way!
simon kane, London, UK
Most of the comments here are coming from a load of bitter and biased Spanish Alonso fans who don't like Lewis because he has more natural talent than any other F1 driver. Sad to see so much negativity about some one who makes F1 actually worth watching by driving aggressively. Grow up.
Stephen Pine, Oxford, England
Bourdais got a penalty!?! Laughable decision. I like both Lewis and Massa and I have no preference between Ferrari and McClaren, but I now hope Lewis and McClaren win just to annoy the establishment who clearly favour Ferrari.
Julian, shrewsbury, uk
Great to see the spaniards joining in on the debate... and what a suprise that Alonso agree's with the stewards decisions given it massively benefitted him... I'm afraid F1 has lost a huge of amount kudos in my book.. Some of the decisions have been to put it mildly quite unbelievable..!
Jim, Londres,
Hamilton is young and inexperienced - he might well make foolish mistakes and need to watch his temperament. And then? It seems some of the comments are also by those who are young and need to think before they put finger to key. The absurdly dramatic statements and over-reactions show this.
John Orford, Balingasag, Philippines
Fixarri have done it again. What can you say about a company that makes its money in the same way as lap dancing: stroking bald middle-aged egos. Go Lewis, you are the special one. You actually make watching this sport exciting.
Arthur Mack, Monaco,
Isn't it funny how the worst comments come form the spanish, just 'cos our boy whupped their Mr Mono-Brow. Yet again Ferrari International Asisstance penalise everybody except the real culprits - ferrari!
Richard, MK, England
If there was a championship for winding up Spaniards, Lewis would have won it by a mile already. Hilarious!
Mike, Telford, UK
@John, manchester - "Most people who comment seem to have it in for Hamilton"
Certainly true of the Spanish contingent who appear to be unable to accept Alonso's lack of relative pace in a McLaren when compared to Hamilton, and Alonso's central role in stealing data from Ferrari last season!
Alastair Johnson, Alicante, Spain
I wonder if Lewis Hamilton reads the comments in this section. If he does I hope he takes note.I would like to remind him though that he is not alone in thinking that there is a vendetta against him where different rules are applied, just to make him feel a bit better .
M. Burkinshaw, Vilagarcía de Arousa, Galicia/Spain
Read the news!
FIA tightened the rules about behaviour on track after the incidents earlier in the season and all the flak from ignorami!
The stewards applied the rules as they stand now, not as they did in the days of James (the Shunt) Hunt: remember the Brands Hatch carnage? Look it up!
Yves Ferrer, algoz, Portugal
Hamilton drove like a idiot at the first corner, but Massa was just as bad later.
I cannot understand why Massa did not get another drive through when he gave Bourdais no room to exit the pits into the first corner, there was no way it was Bourdais fault, he had no where else to go.
Mullarkian, York,
The Bourdais incident proves the Ferrari International Assistance theory. Massa hit him and he was punished. Disgrace!
Dean, Southampton, England
Why is Massa not being criticised for ruining his own chances by punting Hamilton and being given a drive though penalty. He only had to sit tight , but he also had a red rag moment and went off the road in his attempt to pass Lewis before hiting him.
This makes it very interesting for the F1 fans
keyth, Cheltenham,
Even though i'm a Ferrari fan I think much of the criticism against Hamilton is unfair. He's young he made a mistake, i've seen worse behaviour from many of today's sportsmen. So let's move on now folks.
Cameron, Bridgetown, Barbados
This guy is clearly overrated. I know UK desperately needs a national hero, but you guys need to pick another one for the job. LH is a disgrace that will cover UK with shame for years to come.
Alonso's Miracles, Madrid, ESPAÑA, hombre!!
The whole steward decison process urgently needs to be looked at after this season of dubious decisions. They seem to be jumping in with penalties here and there that make no sense. The Bourdais/Massa incident. Why was Bourdais given a penalty? Same stewards at every race for next season please.
simon scully, Grayshott, UK
No. Hamilton is young but Alonso was too when started al F1. The difference is Alonso loves de F1, study his car, selecting himself the best tuning and out of the public life exhibition.
So is more constant, more estrategic, more controlled.
I don´t understand how Ron Dennis continue at Maclaren.
Lu, Vigo, Spain
If the FIA (Ferrari Independant Assistance) stewards apllied retrospectively to Michael Schumacher the same standard of penalty in all his races - you know without a doubt he would never have held a single title.
Will someone please tell me why Bourdais was penalised for daring to leave the pit lane
Chris Williams, Bridgend, UK
I'm in my 60's and I think I'd be showing pressure too, due to the fact that the Stewards show such favouritism to Ferrari!
Hamilton is not infallible, he makes mistakes but it does seem that no matter how well he drives or how hard he tries, the odds are always stacked in Ferrari's favour.
Rosy Knight, Sheffield, UK
There are bigger injustices in the world true, but there can't be a single F1 fan who saw the race on Sunday who is not head-scratching over the penalty against Hamilton and Bourdais. It's ludicrous, scandalous even, until you realise why - both cars got too near a Ferrari. And that's the truth.
Chris Williams, Bridgend, UK
for goodness sake, Hamilton is in his SECOND season of F1 - what other driver in that situation would everyone be criticising so much? he has lots to learn but is an incredible talent in a very good car.
Jon , London,
It seems a lot of people wear blinkers watching F1.
They can never see the moves made other than Ferrari cars being in the right.
Massa should have been given a further penalty for driving the full width of his car into the chequered area at the pit lane. They would have penalised Hamilton.
Chris, Manchester, England
LH needs to set his priorities right. Amazingly, he's so hot-headed that he first fights Raikonen, at the beginning of the race, and then Alonso, at the end, from neither of which fights he could have gained anything. If he loses the title, which I sincerely hope, it will be by his own doing.
Ana Ozores, Palma, Spain
Hamilton will not win the championship this year because in pressure situations he loses presence of MIND. He had the entire race to make up for a slow start where Raikkonen showed him up but let his fragile ego dictate that needless maneuvre to reassert himself immediately. Incredibly immature.
Fred, Manila,
Most people who comment seem to have it in for Hamilton. He is an agressive driver but without him we would have had two processional years of F1. At least he gives it a go in a sport where overtaking is almost impossible. Surely its a good thing to have a challange to Ferrari?
John, manchester,
Ron, you acknowledge that equivocastes by Alonso to miss. He should have thrown the child Hamilton! Alonso in the team with serious championship. Last year dejastes that Alonso did not you win the championship. I hope that this year return to lose. A greeting.
sealy, Barcelona, Spain
Hamilton is a great Talent, however he would do well to learn the first rule of motor racing. "TO FINISH FIRST; YOU FIRST HAVE TO FINISH".
Nigel Wayne, Sliema, Malta
well Ed there's not much positive comment from you on your obvious hero LH in this new incident....as a follower of the sport (?) for 50 years i venture to state that kimi would have gone on to win this race and still have a reasonable chance of retaining his title.is there random drug tests in F1
ken, jakarta, indonesia
Lewis Lewis Lewis
silly clot.
do not loose it again.
Like your postmatch, but the in match is more important mate.
Just one question : Are you too young??
Hope you do it
Mike
Mike, Surrey, United Kingdom
Point proved! its the car that makes the difference not the driver. Any other driver in the McLaren would have won the race. Hamilton is a choker & a danger as evryone else, including the other drivers know. Put Alonso, Button, Massa etc in the McLaren and the championship would have been won by now
PD, Dublin, Ireland
Ernest, Hamilton is not letting down his country. He is not racing for his country. Neither is Alonso racing for Spain, despite the impression given by the Spanish media.
Hugo, Rome,
Cliff, which race where you watching???
Simon, Torquay, Devon , UK
It is going to be a very exciting end of season.
More pressure this year on LH on the final races. Will he stand it?
Can FM stteal another 5 points from LH lead?
And meanwhile RK is lurking behind.
I hope to have to interesting last two races.
ecodelta, Madrid, Spain
I do not understand why LH was penalised. Incidents happen in nearly every turn 1, but it is the first time I see someone get a penalty for forcing people out out of the first corner...
Agustin, Oropesa (Toledo), Spain
I really like Formula 1. The other thing I like about it is that it has the strictest rules, as strict as Rugby. But with one difference: they have replay after replay and can even change decisions well after a race. Just imagine if that was possible in Football.
E.Bee, Toulouse, France
Cliff, you obviously haven't been watching F1 for very long! Go back a few tears and that was pretty common and no penalties like now for just racing!
Hamilton did show his immaturity again. Under pressure he just seems to crack. Too much media hype maybe?
Dean Ingham, Milan, Italy
If Hamilton keeps calm he will win it,they are all making mistakes Micheal Schumacher would still beat them all.
Charles, Chiang Mai, Thailand
I think his arrogant behavior is too much. That was dirty drive against Räikkönen and unecesserary risk with Massa.
This is the third time this season that he ruins Räikkönen's race and such man don't deserve to be world champion at all.
Dagni, Jyväskylä, Finland
Maybe the Hamilton acolytes should accept that he gets penalties because he deserves them. Again, however, its the brain fade that is the worry - what did it matter if Raikkonen was ahead? All he had to do was finish ahead of Massa - is that hard to understand?
Stuart, Reading, England
I appreciate Hamillton when he say he does not undestand. He does not understand, that's all! No one in the world with the championship in his hands would have behaved like him
Given that he is a very fast pilot, the only question left is: is he faster than his own stupidity?
Mario Braccini
Mario Braccini, Rome,
A penalty for "pushing a car wide". Why not just rewrite the rules to say what they mean. "thou shalt not overtake a Ferrari". It was Kovalainen who hit Raikkonen, not Hamilton. These officials are just beyond belief.
Bill, Singapore,
Blame sits squarely on Ron Dennis. He said they were going for it during practice and less so in the race. That left LH slightly less forceful at the drop of the clutch and instantly LH sees a Ferrari in front and he "knee jerks" to push past.
Massa should be disqualified for the blatant collision
Chris Coles, Medstead, Alton, United Kingdom
Hamilton is showing his imiturity again and letting down his team country and himself.
He has had too much too quickly.
Coming first is not always required to WIN.
Ernest Ormes, Taunton, United Kingdom
Hamilton was lucky that he was allowed to continue the race with only a drive-through penalty. It was the most aggrecious example of dangerous driving I have ever seen. The start was a cheap shot against his fellow competitors and a few years ago, he would have been punted right off the track.
Cliff Hill, Dallas, Texas
