Lewis Hamilton's hopes of winning the drivers' world championship have come under further threat after Fernando Alonso vowed to do what we can to help Felipe Massa to win the title.
The Spaniard, whose antagonism towards Hamilton is well-known, was asked if he help the Ferrari driver in the final two races of the season at the expense of his former McLaren teammate, Alonso said: "Yes, without doubt. If I can help, I will help Massa."
The animosity between Alonso and Hamilton developed last year after the Spaniard, who had arrived at McLaren having taken back-to-back world titles with Renault, demanded the team recognise him as their No 1 driver, ahead of Hamilton, who was in his first season in the sport. The fall-out from the incident saw Alonso leave the team after just one season to return to Renault.
Alonso, who has won the past two races in Singapore and Japan, said both Hamilton and Massa had made too many mistakes this season compared to when he won the title for the first time.
"They have lost a lot of points," Alonso said. "After 16 races the leader has 84 points. In 2006 I had 82 in nine races.
"In this championship the drivers who are up there have scored few points. But in the end the one who makes the least errors will win. We'll see."
With two races remaining, Hamilton holds a five-point lead over Massa.
