Brazilian Grand Prix: How the race was won
Lewis Hamilton has become Formula One's youngest ever champion in the most dramatic fashion after finishing fifth in the season-ending Brazil Grand Prix at Interlagos.
As title rival Felipe Massa of Ferrari cruised to victory at his home grand prix, a late-race rain shower looked set to rob Hamilton of the championship after a stop for wet tyres dropped him to sixth, but he managed to overtake Timo Glock's Toyota with just seconds to spare as they entered the pit straight.
"It's pretty much impossible to put into words," a clearly emotional Hamilton said of his victory. "It's been such a long journey - all the sacrifices we've made, I'm so thrilled to do this for everyone.
"It was one of the toughest races of my life."
Ron Dennis, the McLaren chief, hailed Hamilton as a deserved champion. "He's a very special talent. He's the youngest ever world champion and he's done it so well," he said. "If you look at the statistics from all the races this year then you'll realise that.
"He has finished this season with more points than anyone over the last two seasons, so he's deserved it. We are delighted for him. We have enjoyed it a lot here and I'd like to thank all the English supporters for their support,"
Driving with great control, judgement and aided by luck, Hamilton avoided the problems that wrecked his bid to become the first rookie champion last year as he steered his McLaren Mercedes to glory after a tense contest.
Only on that amazing final lap did Hamilton regain the place he needed when German Glock lost 18 seconds in his Toyota and slipped behind him.
Until then, Hamilton's title hopes looked to have been washed away in an amazing late rainstorm but they were rescued in the final minute in front of an impassioned 100,000 crowd at the Interlagos circuit.
"The team didn't say anything so I though I was shot," Hamilton said. "When it started to drizzle, I didn't want to take any risks but at the final corner I got past Glock and I couldn't believe it. I thought 'do I have it, do I have it?' When they told me [I did] I was ecstatic.
"I have done enough and we made it. I can forget everything else.

Well done Lewis, you deserve all you have achieved. Congrats, congrats.
Marion, Stokenchurch,
I'm sick and tired of these guys! Did you watch Spa? Do you know why that Toyota made the podium? Because he changed to wet tyres and made a great final lap.
This time, Timo had no grip with his dry compound! McLaren was tracking Timo Glock and Hamilton was racing him, not Vettel (who's great!)
Jonas, Santiago, Chile
F1 success needs driver and car to perform for the whole race. Fuel strategy, tyres and other maintenance are all important.
Seems Toyota gambled - hoping the car would last 71 laps (at pace) v. losing time on a stop. Nice try but race was too long for TG and McLaren knew it.
Well done Lewis.
Mark, Kirkcaldy, Scotland/UK
So Glock helped him...or maybe didn't..then again maybe he did, whatever! Call me old fashioned, I think he did, so what! The headline will still read - LH, F1 World Champion!
Phil Tunnicliffe, London,
Glock was on worn dry tires in the wet,no traction, instead of making up excuses about glock letting lewis through maybe you should check the final sector times, you will see glock was actually quicker than his team mate trulli who was also on drys.
Graeme, cumbria, UK
A very generous comment above by Renato from Brazil. I thought Glock did Hamilton a favour.
James, East Kilbride, Scotland
Well done Lewis. You deserved to win. We were rooting for you...all year. My 7 year old son is so proud that you won today, he wore his Lewis hat when he was watching! Well done. You are a star.
Jenne, Glos,
FACTS:
Glock & Trulli had dry tyres. Rain was heavier on final lap
Hamilton has scored more points than any other driver since he entered F1
He would have won the title in China but for the disgusting FIA
He never spun 5 times & finished last (Massa at Silverstone)
He is the deserving champion
Matt Black, London,
Good luck to Hamilton, he's got talent and showed it as he had immense peer pressure. Unfortunatley the points system puts the sport in the cartoon catagory. It;s about time it became WINS plus POINTS. Have a secondry consistencey c/ship if points only count, you could win c/ship and not win a race
cjf, Cairns, Australia
Title is present from Glock. The main question and the point of 2008 Grand prix is why did he stop?
N Budisin, Novi Sad, Serbia
It's good to see fairness wins through and the team of McLaren have won their just rewards, For a 22 year old this lad is perhaps the brightest hope for F1 and has stood alone since his appearance on track just 24 months ago, no other driver can match that and skill doesn't come in skin colours.
Smed, Launceston, Tasmania.
The Union Jack from the hands of Stirling Moss and Jim Clark falls in the hands of a Hamilton. As a friend of England to day I' non proud at all.
Benny Bianchi, Roma, Italy
Great pity about the partisan comments, Lewis Hamilton completely deserves his success! Wonderful guy, wonderful family, great life story, an inspiration for us all. Special congratulations to Ron Dennis.
Donovan Wright, Reading, Berkshire,
Massa had (i) a fuel rig accident and (ii) his engine blowing up at another grand prix. If it wasn't for these he would have won the championship.
My ranking of current F1 drivers:
1. Vettel
2. Massa
3. Alonso
4. Hamilton
John, Nicosia, Cyprus
Timo Glock deserved a place on the podium next to Lewis.
Shay, Sing,
Hamilton won only because of Timo Glock, Massa is the real hero, Glock helped Hamilton that's why he won this championship. Massa is very good driver and he shows his ability by finishing at 1st at Brasil.
Rahul N, Mumbai, India
Timo Glock was 15 seconds ahead of Hamilton at the start of the final lap, yet Hamilton finished some 6 seconds ahead of Glock, a swing of 21 seconds. Does this not seem rather a lot to anyone? The six seconds that Hamilton made up on Glock were all made on the home straight!
Iain Denton, Solihull, England
Hamilton.
Arrogant? 18 other drivers can't all be wrong. Massa arguably deserved to win more than Hamilton. He has certainly been as good if not a better driver than Hamilton. He has been plagued by bad luck and misfortune, his 2008 track record speaks for itself. Hamilton has been lucky.
John Smith, London,
Hamilton deserved it. Massa's a quality driver but arguably has the slightly better car in the Ferrari which makes Hamilton's title all the more impressive. Hamilton showed in earlier rounds his ability to excel in all driving conditions and that's why he has more points than Massa and is number 1.
Erica G, Woking, UK
Lewis Hamilton has learned from his past mistakes!.He rigtheously won this race by keeping his calm, was patient and clever enough to pull his way through.God Bless!
Peter Mtui, Wiener Neustadt, Austria
All the people saying Lewis does not deserve to be champion. Could i ask you why?
Massa is certainly not a better driver, although today he proved a quality human being and made Alonso's petty mindedness look very poor!
All hail the new KING!!!!
Alston, Wellingborough, England
This was a fair result. If it hadn't been for the final bit of rain, LH would easily have come 5th and hence won the championship.
Regardless, he'd done enough this season and this race.
Massa had a good year, is a good (and courteous) driver. He'll win a championship soon.
Clive, Surrey,
Lewis deserved it this time last year and deserved it this year and had in fact won it before China taking into account the seriously biased FIA rulings.
Massa is a humble, talented and deserving driver but was only close to Hamilton due to points being awarded to him by the FIA and other drivers
iain, whangarei, new zealand
Congratulations Lewis you've done us proud Son your a inspiration and role model for me and im sure many others being a black man myself its always been a wish of mine to be able to race a F1 car since the days of Senna im now 38 so the dream is dead but seeing you race 'strange it may seem' is like you are doing it for me wearing my boots as much as Britain is proud of I as a Black English man am even prouder.
Dane, London, England
Lewis won it in Singapore when everyone said he should have been more cautious and settle for 4th. Every point in every race counts and he took them when Ferrari didn't. Thats how you win. Congratulations to him and the team.
Michael, Singapore, Singapore
Excellent race, Lewis is a worthy Champion. He would have had the title earlier if it was not for some of the bizarre FIA stewart decisons!
Jonathan Butler, Stanley, Falkland Islands
Congratulations Mr Hamilton, but Felipe Massa has proved again that he is the best!!!
Rogerio Souza, Curitiba, Brazil
Despite the Campbell's of CT, SA and the Alonso's of Spain, Lewis is World Champ. Like Jesse Owen, Mohammed Ali, Tiger Woods, & legendary Pele, Lewis Hamilton shows the world that despite color & discrimation, talent cannot be held back! Ferrari is F1 steward's favorite; that's why Massa is so close
Pillay Family, Cape Town, South Africa
A fitting "by the skin of his teeth" end! Hurray.
Michael, West Midlands,
If Glock had wanted to help Hamilton he would put the rains tyres
rather to keep going until the end... Stop talking for nothing Hamilton deserves his title, And don't forget he "won" at Spa a race and he was magificient at Monaco on very bad weather conditions
Moussa, Paris,
Lewis Hamilton ..... Well Done!!!!!!!!
Great Britain is proud of you.
Obstacles have been put in your way constantly by means of wacky penalities by the FIA because you have dared to race wheel to wheel with Ferrari.
Sip the champayne, enjoy the rewards of you and your teams hard work! :)
Neil, sunderland, Great Britain
Lewis has not won the title. The other drivers have lost it. That's the difference.
Kubica, Vettel and Alonso are better than this guy. And he knows it. You know it. Everybody knows it.
Oliver, Madrid,
What a race!
Formula One is back.
We better watch for Vettel, that young man is a great racing driver.
Jose Costa, Luanda, Angola
Shame about the sad partisan comments on here, you did what you neded today, the rest of this season has been great. Well Deserved. Sorry for Massa, he has had a great year, although now the stress is off, I think next year will be a fantastic one
Darron, Reading,
Well done LH. Had the F1 stewards not been against LH, he would have been the WDC long time ago. They just made it more painful for Ferrari in the end. Good race FM.
deepak, Philadelphia, US
this was a very poor championship year. the points needed to be no. one was very low. nobody in history had better car than hamilton at his first season. he will no win next year because of alonso. very poor last race. very lucky. mercedes knows that getting rid of ron and lewis would be good.
paulo, bilbao, spain
Well done Timo Glock! Just because his tires were worn out doesn't mean he couldn't hold on for the last 200 metres.
As far as Hamilton is concerned being a good driver doesn't mean one deserves a Championship. Especially when he deliberately rear ends a Ferrari in Canada knowing he couldn't stop.
Sebastian, Milan, Italy
Well done Sir Lewis Hamilton!!!!
Marlon Rooy, Johannesburg, South Africa
Really stunning finish in today's race! For 2 minutes what seemed impossible to us Brazilians almost became true. Unfortunately, the rain got too hard for Glock to keep the 4th place (he was bravo, though!). Massa did a great job too, his time will come. Hamilton deserves the championship, no doubt.
Renato Nora, Volta Redonda, RJ, Brazil
Well done LH
Top points scorer over last 2 years - unlucky (naive) last year but learned his lesson this year.
Pam, Caldy, Uk
Seeing as they've done everything possible to hinder Hamilton
I am very suprised they haven't found anything with which to favour Ferrari.
The Brazilian crowd were very disappointing from the start and frankly I'm happy that what they came to see was so cruelly snatched away from them L-E-W-I-S!!!!!
Daniel Owen, London, uk
Of course Lewis deserves to be champion! he scored more points than any other driver! simple really.....
AJ, Sydney, Australia
Congratulations, Lewis. Well deserved. Brilliant drive.
Jay, ireland,
Massa's a good driver, but does a guy who spins 9 times in a wet race while his championship rival wins by over 1min - Silverstone 2008 - display the raw skill that most champions have? LH made mistakes, sure, but more through inexperience and exuberance that'll be tempered. The right guy won.
JJG, New York, USA
Congratulations to Massa and Hamilton, 2 great drivers. BUT imagine if Massa had won the championship because of the ridiculous Bourdais incident in Fuji! (which gave Massa an extra point)
Leo, Salisbury, UK
Exceptional, well done Sir Lewis Hamilton
Marlon Rooy, Johannesburg, South Africa
whoever wins the championship deserves to be champ, thats the beauty of f1.. Raik won last year because he deserved to despite Massa helping him in the final race. Ham won this year because he deserved to, despite timo and toyota messing up. You people are blinded by your hatred of a talented driver
James, Lincoln, UK
Fantastic victory for Lewis, but also for Massa, for being a gentleman, a worthy opponent, and retaining his dignity throughout, unlike Alonso in 2007. A true sportsman.
Trevor Osborne, Gaydon, UK
well done lewis. massa wouldnt have even been in a title winning position today if lewis hadnt been robbed of points. how sad frederic that a german should question hamilton. remember schuey driving into hill and robbing him of the title. lewis is the champion and lets face it massa never will be.
chris giger, wembley, england
Lewis won this championship when he put in mesmerising drives at Silverstone, Monaco, Hockenheim, Spa, Shanghai etc. Today was not luck. Today was simply a case that the driver with the most points won the title. Pure and simple.
2007 was exactly the same. One down, 6 to go....
Stuart Rowland, Oxford, UK
Now we just require him to win the US Presidency..
Peter, Preston, England
Well done Lewis, You very well deserved to win the the F1 Title this year. You made us all proud
Amalia, London, UK
Nice too see that ferrarigate were put in thier place. Did you see them celebrating in the pits, then they realised that the young british driver had finished in 5th. How they were gutted. Well done Lewis you done yourself and the country proud.
Neil Burton, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire
Hamilton counted on luck. Massa is an excellent pilot indeed and in my opinon, he is much better than hamilton. It´s difficult to make justice now. the whole championship, massa showed us competence and determination rather than Lewis.
cissa, vitoria, brazil
Lewis did it by one point, exactly the same margin that our first British world champion Mike Hawthorn won by exactly 50 years ago. There's a new book out on Mike called 'Golden Boy if' you want to learn more about him and also an item about him and Lewis on The BBC One Show tomorrow evening.
Tony Bailey, Hassocks, UK
Glock helped Lewis??? And what about ALL those FIA "decisions" that have been made in Ferrari's favour time and time again?? Huh? What about those? Including penalising Lewis with a 25 second penalty after the race for the first time in Formula 1 History! Yet Massa makes a mess and they let him off!
Elias, Stevenage, UK
Lewis has been the most exciting racer all year, he has brought F1 back to the top.
When everyone on the track tried their hardest (and admitted so) to assist Massa, to finish top of the pile at the end of the season was just exceptional.
The best man won.
Nick, Manchester, UK.
Listening to you all makes me want to throw up. Lewis has done a grand job through out. He deserves the title. Massa is fantastic and his time will come. Would you really be happy if he had won knowing that he really didn´t deserve the Spa points? Massa´s time will come. Well done Lewis............
Paul, Malsch, Germany
Sounds like sour grapes from Mike from Sweden and Mike from Brazil. McLaren were tracking Glock with GPS, knew he was slow, and predicted that Hamilton would pass him on the last lap. They told him not to get involved with Vittel as they predicted this, and ti play it safe to stay on the track.
Paul, Zurich, Switzerland
Fellow posters. All those from Russia, until you can put someone on top spot, quit whining about how 'biased' it is. For all those Ferrari fans, you cannot judge bias. How many races have you won with team tactics and FIA handouts? Finally, seen as 'nobody likes Hamiliton' why would a Glock help?
Rich, Lancashire, UK
To Mark Cintra- Ferrari have had the stewards in their pockets all season; thats the only reason Massa got close to winning!!!
Simon, Hove,
People really think Glock helped Hamilton? GET REAL!!! He was racing for track position himself. Hamilton deserves the championship - he'd have won it weeks ago if the stewards hadn't made stupid, biased decisions against him (and in favour and Ferrari).
Get over yourselves - Hamilton won it fair!
Elma, Southend, UK
What silly comments: Hamilton happened to have some good fortune on the last lap of the last race but if the incident had happened earlier in the season nobody would have thought twice about it.
All drivers have good and bad luck and Hamilton's good luck came when it mattered most, that's all.
Andrew Moore, Pristina, Kosovo
I want to know why somebody would make a note on this page stating that the end was suspsicous. It's not open to interpretation, it rained and Tim Glock did not stop to change his tires and therefore lost places on the last lap. Hamilton is a great driver and doesn't need any favours.
Andrew, Chester, England
He beat the FIA's outrageous prejudice.
He beat the racists (The Spanish particularly).
He beat the competition in a slower car than the Ferrari. If you doubt it, check Heiki's final score versus Kimi and Felippe.
Fantastic, congratulations Lewis.
Bigots and haters - now shut up for good.
Hector, London,
Let's just say that Timo let Lewis through, lets ignore the fact that Timo had the wrong dry tyres for the wet surface, how is that different from China when Kimi let Massa through? Whats good for the goose would be good for the gander. Lewis must have some talent, surely.
P Barron, Oxford,
Hamilton aided by luck? That's a bit of a stretch he was the best driver last year but lost to a bizarre and unlikely sequence of events. He is the man and probably will be for a very long time. Put anyone in the same car then we'll see who'll win. He bossed Alonso despite being a rookie.
James, London,
Ha ha sounds like none of you cant take losing if hamilton had of lossed he would of been the first to congratulate massa he should of won it last year so he deserved it this year all of you get off yout high horse he's new fast and black get used to it !!!
Michael, wolves, u.k
The points total does not lie.
kevin , sunbury,
Well done to Lewis.Last year Maclaren lost the unlooseable, this year it was Ferrari's turn to throw the drivers championship away.Poor results like Singapore mean the championship will be determined by lesser drivers.Hopefully next year Ferrari will move heaven& earth to get Vettel ,the next Schumi
Tony, Melbourne, Australia
Lewis Hamilton TOTALLY DESERVED the championship. He has been robbed by the FIA all season. If you actually watched the race then you would realise that Glock didn't change tyres, and he paid for it. Grow up
Katie Amesbury, Swansea, Wales
It's totally unjust for you to say that Glock won the Championship for him, Lewis won the championship all year with wins at Silverstone and Germany. Yes, Glock helped him today, but Lewis would've been the champion weeks ago if it wasn't for poor stewarding descions like at Spa this year, congrats
Jack, Manchester, England
Mark in watford.... thanks for posting the TimoGlock Link ... it's where you finish that matters - nice one.
Joe, Kiev, Ukraine
Massa won the race, Hamilton won the championship in spite of being deducted 10 points. The championship is not won in a day, it is won in a season. he deserves it. Bravo Lewis.
Rachael, Yaounde, Cameroon
Next year there will be thre world champions on the track, it will be great to watch.
My bet is FA will win another time, the second part of the season he has shown he is by far the best driver, although some won´t recognize this.
By the way, is LH better than Vettel? I dont think so...
Marco, Gijon,
Hamilton did not win the championship, Glock did it for him. Such a shame to win that way. And to U all who think Hamilton is a talented driver: Yes, when it comes to obstructing someone else or driving dangerous. He´s taken M.Schumachers role in the F1 circus.
Mike, Gothenburg, Sweden
Massa is better, Glock help Lewis. Totally unfair.
Mark Cintra, Porto Alegre, Brazil
http://www.planet-f1.com/story/0,18954,3213_4445897,00.html
Comments by Timo Glock to prove his tyres were a mess.
Well done Lewis.
Luck today but he has earnt that right throughout the season and its nice to have a British World Champion rather than some loser.
Mark, Watford,
well done Ron Dennis!
you know how to make a champion! when you couldn´t pace up Lewis, you could pace down enough Timo. Well done mate. looking up for your next year miracles. have fun..
Artan, Valladolid, Spain
Even though I'm a Ferrari supporter (I couldn't be otherwise since I'm Italian) I have to admit Hamilton is a very talented driver. A little bit arrogant but talented. Anyway Massa is good but not as good to be Ferrari's main driver. We need a new Schumy.
Horace, Florence, Tuscany, Italy
Massa lost the championship in Hungary and Singapore.
However, congrats to Timo Glock
Vinicius, Franca, Brazil
What racism? Anyone mentioning racism is nuts and off the point of this discussion. It is about driving be any driver black or white, lesbian or whatever. He was not convicing. One has to be convincing to be the best like in judo or chess or like Senna. And LH won by a margin. Simply not convincing
sergei, moscow, russia
I simply can not believe those who are saying that LH doesn´t deserve it. Robbed of points by stewards, driven off the track by FM - FM also handed points on a plate by Raikkinen. I mean, how much do you have to do before you´re allowed to be the champ?
Angus, Hannover, Germany
To all the F1 geniuses questioning the 18 secs lost by glock - glock didn't change his tyres; so 18 seconds lost is about right - only one other person had the same tyres as glock last lap - and guess what - he scored the exact same lap time; if glock had changed tyres LH would have come 5th anyway
Gurd, Wolverhampton, UK
Well done to both Lewis and Massa, what an AMAZING RACE!!! Best man won and i cant wait for next season. And to Frederic and the other miseries, get over yourselves! Hamilton is world No1 baby and all your sour grapes wont change that! Better get used to him being at the top. well done Lewis!!!
Susy, Lincoln, UK
Absolute legend mate. Lewis you are a true British champion. Knew you could do it, gave us all fright but the emphatic finsih was the iceing on the cake. This day will be remembered for many years to come, the day Lewis Hamilton took the racing world by storm!!!!!!!!! Well done keep it up
Ray, Blackburn, Lancashire
He really doesn't deserve to be a Champion. He could hardly come fifth and didn't manage to do any with Vettel, only luck and stupid ferrari pit stop signal system because of which Massa lost its title helped him. Vettel was the best. Looking forward for 2009. P.s. Congrats all british F1 fans.
Vitaliy, Moscow, Russia
Hamilton assisted by Glock? Really? I thought the other drivers were doing all they could to "Help" Massa?
Besides, it was Raikkonen that 'Assisted' Massa into a championship 'chance' anyways.
Well done Lewis, against all odds, Great driving wins through
Thomas, Munich, Germany
Hamilton won in Manoco which is a good guide to driver skills and he is the best driver I have ever seen in the wet, Massa is one of the worst.
Of course he deserves it and he should have won last year, at least he is a sportsman which Alonso and some others arn't.
Malcolm, Ventnor, UK
Rationally no one can argue that Hamilton is an exceptional talent and a worthy world champion... I just cant help thinking what a great season awaits us next year.. Just think about it, 3 excellent world champions racing each other along with a bunch of fantastic new talents and all the new tech.
Pablo, Mallorca, Spain
my Congratulations for Lewis.
(plz don't take stereotypes of spaniard people)
Jordi, Barcelona,
Nobody will remeber this year victory!
Hamilton defenitly didnt deserve to win the championship.
Massa drove far better this year.
Everybody should agree that luck was in his(Hamilton) favour..(not to mention Glock help!)
Pedro, Madrid, Spain
Something fishy going on here.Glock lost 18 secs on last lap.No reason given. He had dry tyres, but 18 secs...........
dave, london, uk
Well done Lewis - Well deserved - Yooo Hoooo!!!
Maire, London, UK
Well deserved victory. Well done Lewis. Fantastic drive.
Mark U, Deal, Kent
What about the previous race? Did Massa get an extra point handed to him by his team mate? It was part of a winning strategy wasn't it? I have a feeling that there were 3 maybe 6 Ferrari cars in the last race. What comes around goes around. Hamilton certainly deserves to be the champion. WELL DONE.
Ben, London,
Suspicious ending!! How pathetic, especially after Spa which Hamilton won on the track. Glock lost his advantage because he was on the wrong tyres when the rain came. Hamilton is a very worthy champion and nothing can now take that away from him. Is racism behind these foul, sour-grape comments?
Lisa, London,
I´m happy for Lewis Hamilton! He did it! Despite all the criticism and hate. You guys who dislike him as a person just get used to the fact. EAT YOUR HEART OUT! Last season Kimi got lucky and became champion - thanks to LH messing up. Now it was LH who got lucky owing to Timo´s dry-tire gamble.
LGT, Stockhom, Sweden
Of course he deserves it.
Hamiltion's been the best to watch all year.
Well Done
Webby, Hereford, England
Only someone who does not understand racing could possibly say that Lewis does not deserve to be champion! A great day for racing. Well done Felipe your day will come.
Justice is served at last for Lewis glad to see stewards not involved yet. BUT!!
Alston, Wellingborough, England
Hamilton son of the soil u nearly gave me a heart attack my bro you are SIMPLY THE BEST.
tshepo, qwaqwa, south africa
Congrats to Timo Glock!!
Fantastic race well done, your check is on his way.
JoseBelgica, Brussels, Belgium
Any explanations about Glock´s behaviour? Very, very strange. Well, we are waiting for news about it.
Congratulations in any case, but, insisting on: very, very strange.
Carlos Andújar, Madrid,
Well done Hamilton! However, keep your head on shoulder. Do not let success destroy you. Early in life success can be destructive -- opned to all kinds of temptations. Only few like Tiger Wood, Pete Sampra or Roger Federer have managed to cope with it.
Jesse Kally-Williams, Prättigau, Switzerland
Frederic, Berlin - How can you say Hamilton does not deserve this? He is clearly the best driver out there and the scoreboard does not lie come the end of the season! Sours grapes from a sorry nation missing Schumacher
WELL DONE HAMILTON! The whole of England is very proud of you!
Stuart, Chelmsford, UK
Go on son! Through all the trials and tribulations, the stewards and the haters, through the strong competition from the most talented and competitive F1 line-up in many years. With heart, with skill with passion and control, with the weight of expectation on him Lewis has triumphed. We are so proud
Al, Birmingham, UK
Wow,what a climax to the championship.I think both Felippe & Lewis deserved 2take the championship. Both have driven some excellent races this season, & both have made some glaring mistakes. But someone has to win, and it was a very close finish. So congrats to LH, bad luck to FM!! Roll on next season
Michael Solomon, Barnstaple, Devon
Hamilton does deserve the championship Frederic, he's a great driver, he's worked hard, has taken more flack than any other driver and has faced unfair rulings against him.
Well done Lewis, you're a star!
Sarah, Market Harborough, Albion
Well done Massa you did what you had to do and should be congratulated for that. It must be hard to take having it in the bag on the last lap and still loose the drivers Championship.
I am sure you will get fed up with the sympathy.
peter, Reading, U.K.
Frederic, Berlin:
And Massa did. The title would have been wrapped up in China had it not been for the FIA stewards with dodgy penalties throughout the season.
Massa is good and I feel sorry for him lthough I'm happy for hamilton.
The sport needs to sort itself out to have a honest new season.
Adrian, Whitehill, UK
lewis hamilton most certainly deserves his title,he is a very impressive, hard working young man,who manages to stay pretty well grounded in a very high profile position.....many footballers could do worse than follow his example;Liz.Madrid
liz, Madrid,
By every measure, Lewis Hamilton is deserving of the world championship. There is no denying this. Done and Dusted. Can't be withdrawn. To all Lewis detractors, i make a vow that this is only the first of many. The floodgates have been opened!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Frique, Bedford,
Lewis hamilton congratulations....a superb year well rounded and you proved youre the man....Timo glock got it on the wrong tyres nuthing more...all the rest of you welll just because we have a English world champion ey bit jealous now... well done lewis awesome driver and a sensible drive!!
Kris Parkinson, Lincoln, England
how do you work that one out Frederic? just out of interest... he's the most point even after spa... so he's champion. how is it so difficult to comprehend? as Massa said "that's racing." well done lewis and toyota...
Patrick, London, UK
I find it absolutely disgusting that people will want to look for a way to tarnish Hamilton's achievements this season. I thought the race in Brazil was one of the most exciting races we've seen in recent years. Massa drove brilliantly and he should hold his head high for the superb performance
Tunde, Surrey, England
Julio and Frederic, your words shame you and your countries. What sad bad losers.
Chico, Alicante, Spain
Spanish racists, how do you like that?!
Steve, London,
Julio, that's cheque mate, how's the weather in Spain ?
chad, NY, NY, US
F1 is no longer boring. Schumacher was good but there was never any competition. At long last it's worth watching again. Well done young man.
Tom, Lichfield,
As Lewis does not deserve to be champion surely the race stewards or the FIA can come up with something to take his title away!
denis, Seattle, usa
Very suspicious end. It will of course be investigated but nothing will come of it. Tragic for massa who was the deserving champion
Alastair Campbell, Cape Town, South Africa
Good to see the bitterness that Hamilton has had to encounter remains, rather than an ability to accept defeat graciously.
Tim, Leicester, England
What an irony. Schumacher loses his championship in Brazil in 2006 but is a hero as many times before. This guys becomes a champion coming fifth and still looks like a joke. Bravo for Schumacher, Massa, Fettel, Alonso, Glock and other daring ones. But this champion is a joke.
sergei, moscow, russia
Well done Lewis, beating Ferrari & the FIA,
one intense last lap there, edge of my seat stuff.
Kevin, Colchester, UK
Lewis Hamilton proved again he can beat the prejudice and bad luck. He is a real fighter! Congratulations to Lewis.
Ludvik, Veldhoven, Netherldans
Congratulations Lewis!
What comes around goes around - the cynic in me says that the millions Toyota had to settle out of court to Ferrari a few years ago for alleged espionage was paid back today!
Tom, London, UK
Well done, Lewis!!! Cannot wait to see more of your incredible driving in 2009. You had us all screaming with joy today. Shame about the negative remarks and the redneck crowd booing - that's what you get for being exceptional. Stay strong. Stay positive. You're a REAL STAR...WAUW!
Mette, Copenhagen, Denmark
One point is enough, but don't leave it so late next year.
Congratulations Lewis for making it exciting for an old F1 fan who though the magic had gone from racing since MS retired.
Patricia Thornton, Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria
frederic - he got the most points therefore he is the champion. if Massa had won i would be happy to say he deserved to be champion i would LOVE to see him race you
alex, lymington,
Congrats, Lewis...you deserve it!
MITCH, Surprise AZ, United States
Frederic, Berlin...why does he not deserve it? He amassed more points than anyone other driver over the 18 race season. Methinks you are bitter. Get over it. Massa isn't up to much. Kubica and Alonso are far superior and the closest to Hamilton. And remember, he's only 24. Well done Lewis.
Anthony, Trieste, Italy
Massa won more. More second places. Better driver. Unfair. Totally unfair.
swarmsh, douala, cameroun
so, not a word about that mysterious dropped 18 seconds by Glock. It would have been a different story if that had led to Massa taking the title.
steve , Tring, UK
I'm really pleased for LH. He has overcome racism and unfair decisions to win the title. The sour faces of his rivals and of the Ferrari camp when they realised that Massa hadn't actually won the title were priceless! He deserves more titles and will get them in the coming seasons.
tr, london,
Hamilton does not deserved to be champion, whether he deserves to be champion or not is not the point, HE IS get used to it!
Garcia, Ozone Park, usa
Frederic, Berlin, Germany - why the sour attitude? He won as much on merit as Schumacher ever did!
Are you afraid that this is the first step to him beating the red baron's record?
neno, Cambridge, uk
Congratulations to Lewis. Massa drove well and deserved to win today's race but Hamilton deserved the Championship.
Justice was served today and the best man won the championship.
To all those racialists and Hamilton "knockers" I say who had the last laugh? LOL
Rosy Knight, Sheffield, UK
Last year Massa gave a gift to Raikkonnen, this year Glock did the same with Hamilton. What a shame ! How can a pilot lose 20 seconds in two turns? In Spanish Timo means "fake", and this describes exactly the situation we have seen today!
Juan, Seville, Spain
Fortune favours the brave..
And Lewis has certainly been brave.
Mark, Penrith, Cumbria
Lewis should give half of his monthly payment to Glock. I m so glad that ITV is not hosting F1 any longer. Their coverage is biased and have more ads than F1 cars. How is it possible that Glock loses 20s on 1 lap when Kubica was driving faster than LH with the same tyres. Strange!
Leo, Brighton, UK
Well done Lewis, well done Massa, both great drivers. both performed brilliantly all year.
Mog, Derby, United Kingdom
Hamilton is a very worthy F1 Drivers' Champion having won the most points despite suffering numerous dodgy decisions by the stewards, especially in Spa. Massa showed great class in his comments today and it is a great pity that some of the posted sour-grape comments do not show Massa's class.
Lisa, London,
Well done Lewis, you deserve it mate.
Have a great night
Lee Mitchell, Blackpool, Lancs
TImo was on dry tires. Massa lost the championship in Singapore when Ferrari's technology went wrong.
Congrats to Lewis! He is a great champion and this is no doubt the first of many.
Ralph M, NC, USA
Frederic thats because you wouldnt support anyone thats not german be a good looser
mike, afghanistan,
Congrats to Timo Glock.
well done mate !
Don't worry your check is in the mail !
Julio, Nancy , France
Hamilton does not deserved to be champion.
Frederic, Berlin, Germany
