Woman of the year
Laurena Ochoa, who won eight tournaments including the Women's British Open and took over as world No 1 from Annika Sorenstam, would be most people's choice. Not mine however. My woman of the year is Gaynor Knowles who this year got engaged to Colin Montgomerie. They will marry on April 19 2008. Brave Gaynor. Does she know what she is letting herself in for? One hopes so. There again, maybe she doesn't.
Adminstrator of the year
George O'Grady, executive director of the European Tour, who last November announced the most significant response to the world dominance of golf by the PGA Tour in the US. This is the $10m Dubai World Championship, the biggest purse in golf. Starting in Dubai in December 2009 it will be the culmination of what is currently known as the Order of Merit but from 2009 will be renamed the Race to Dubai. For revealing he is a Rolling Stones fan, Tim Finchem, Commissioner of the PGA Tour in the US, is a close runner-up to O'Grady.
Best interview of the year
Colin Montgomerie - on a Wednesday when he is often articulate, funny, intelligent and up to date, talking in clear well-constructed sentences that comprise a perfect soundbite.
Worst interview of the year
Colin Montgomerie - on a Friday. He might not even stop to talk if he has missed the halfway cut. If he does then it can be the opposite of all that he is on a Wednesday. He can be morose, curt, cutting and dismissive.
Marriage of the year
Luke Donald's. It took place on a Greek island in a church several hundred feet above the Mediterranean and lasted three days - not the wedding itself but the celebrations. Some marriages have been shorter.
Divorce of the year
Greg Norman's from Laura, his ex wife in September after 26 years of marriage. Greg settled £26m on Laura. In mid-December Norman announced his engagement to Chris Evert.
Mistake of the year
Tiger Woods's decision to miss the christening of his daughter Sam. Woods has made an awful lot of his devotion to his daughter. How come he was in the US while the important family ceremony was taking place in Sweden?
Best course of the year
Newcastle County Down for the Walker Cup. A reminder that courses don't need lots of artificial ponds to be difficult, nor wasp-thin fairways, nor greens that roll at 13 on a Stimpmeter. Its presentation was second only in recent memory to Hoylake's for the 2006 Open.
Worst course of the year
The Smurfit course at the K Club. It has an artificial linksy feel to it yet it is 20 miles from the sea. It is as out of keeping with the lush green hills of Co Kildare as would be a touch of lemonade atop a pint of Guinness. When will wealthy developers see through the craze for American course architects when there are good European ones?
Manager of the year
Adrian Mitchell of the International Management Group. Why? Because he has looked after the affairs of the last two British or Irish players to win a major championship - Paul Lawrie at the 1999 Open and Padraig Harrington at this year's Open. If you want to tease Guy Kinnings, joint head of golf at the IMG golf division and as such Mitchell's boss, then ask him how many major champions he has managed?
Most underrated event of the year
The Correspondent's Club, competed for by journalists on The Times over the East course at Wentworth each February and won this year by, er, ahem, me.
Most overrated event of the year
Any world golf championship event.
Best date change of the year
Moving The Players Championship from March to May. Jacksonville Beach is attractive in the fifth month of the year.
Worst date change of the year
Bringing the President's Putter forward so that it starts not in the second week in January 2008 but the first. Doesn't anyone in the Oxford and Cambridge Golfing Society celebrate Christmas and the new year?
Best title of the year
The Masters. It is short, precise, pithy and to the point.
Worst title of next year
The Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
Best food of the year
At Wentworth golf club during the BMW Championship in May.
Worst food of the year
At the Masters in April. Pimento cheese sandwiches on starchy white bread. Ugh.
