Tournament: The 72nd Masters Tournament.
Dates: April 10-13
Site: Augusta National Golf Club.
Length: 7,445 yards.
Par: 36-36—72.
Purse: To be determined ($7.4 million, $4.7 million in 2007).
Field: 93 players (three amateurs)
Defending champion: Zach Johnson.
Last year: Johnson was two shots behind going into a final round in which five players had at least a share of the lead at one point, including four-time champion Tiger Woods. Johnson took the outright lead with a birdie at No. 13, his 11th birdie of the week on the par 5s without ever going for the green in two. He birdied the 14th and 16th holes to extend his lead, and finished with a 69 for a two-shot victory over Woods, Retief Goosen and Rory Sabbatini. He finished at 1-over 289, the first player since 1956 the Masters champion was over par.
Ten years ago: Mark O'Meara birdied the last two holes for a one-shot victory over David Duval and Fred Couples.
Fifty years ago: Arnold Palmer won the first of his four green jackets.
Streaking: Gary Player will compete in his 51st Masters, breaking the record he shared with Arnold Palmer.
Key Statistic: Over the last 25 years, the average winning score at the Masters has been the highest of the four majors.
Masters tradition: The Masters is the only major where the yardage is in increments of five. Co-founder Clifford Roberts felt in 1934 that to suggest a greater degree of precision was misleading because the tee and hole locations changed each round.
Noteworthy: No one has ever won more than three Masters in one decade.
Quoteworthy: "He's dominated golf like nobody has ever dominated the game. You can't predict what's going to happen, but the pace he has set and continues to set, it's unmatchable." — Tom Watson on Tiger Woods.
