My day began with the extraordinary treat of having Nick Bradley, my coach, bring Kate and myself breakfast in bed. Nothing fancy, mind. Just beans on toast. And it ended with me in shock after going round in 78 and falling far out of the lead. What a contrast.
I had 14 pars today. I hit a lot of fairways. I did not feel I had played badly. I was two under with four holes to play, which was not great but not bad either. I thought if I could get a birdie or two out of the last four holes then I was right back in the tournament.
Then came the 15th where I admit I made a mental error. I had 228 yards to the front of the green, 235 to the flag. That is right on my limit of a 5 wood and I dithered between that or a 3 iron. Though I had identified a bail out area in the bunker to the right of the green, from which I could easily have splashed out and one-putted for a birdie, I still could not make up my mind completely. In the end I took the safe option - and I regret it.
My second shot went too far and left me with a 63 yard pitch. It may sound funny for a pro to say this but even we have our favourite distances and favourite clubs. That is not my favourite distance and I took too big a divot. Then when I dropped another ball that sat down on the fairway and in trying to dig it out I thinned it over the green. I did well to get an 8.
I was shell shocked as I walked to the 16th tee and banged my first putt nearly ten feet past and missed the one coming back. I could miss the cut here I thought to myself.
But I am pleased with the way I played the last two holes. Neither is what you might call an easy hole. I used my driver on both, which indicated that I wanted to be positive, and I holed a couple of testing short putts for pars.
I repeat: as I was travelling back to our house I found myself thinking: I did not play as badly as that score would suggest. This is in no way an excuse but taking five hours and 40 minutes is an awfully long time. And having Tiger Woods up ahead and behind us the groundsmen emptying the dustbins and painting the crosswalks and that sort of thing is a little disorientating. I let it get to me today.
I have to put this out of my mind now and be positive. I will be. Tomorrow is going to be a good day!

Hi Justin,
I have thoroughly enjoyed your diary and your insight to the way you prepare, think and execute the game. Unfortunately because of time constraints on players as you refer to means you very seldom get the sort of 3-D picture you created.
Your honesty is also refreshing, how many other players would so openly admit to errors due to fear of media criticism and your nice touches bringing together friends to enjoy peoples company to relax and having breakfast in bed struck a note of harmony with me. The fact that this over indulgence cost you 10 shots is down to your coach and not you!!
Good luck over the next two days and letâs hope for a rampant Roseâ¦.
Best wishes,
Robin.
