I set out with high hopes today. I had to try and work my way back into the tournament and I thought I could do that if I shot a nice 66. Instead I shot a 73. Tough. Not great.
It went wrong from the start. I hit two nice shots onto the 1st green and three-putted and that really tested my patience, my resolve. That was hard to take. After I three-putted the 6th I had to adopt a come-what-may attitude because it seemed that the harder I was trying the harder it was getting. The birdie I made on the 9th was my first in 32 holes. That is a surprising statistic isn't it? 32 holes in a major championship without a birdie. The last birdie I had came on the 13th in my first round. Look at my tournament with that statistic in mind and you get some idea of what a frustrating few days it has been.
Then I gave that birdie back again by missing a short putt on the 10th. At that point I thought I had to take some risks. On the 11th I went for the flag and ended up in the pond in front of the green. Result? A 6. That came from going at a pin that I would not have dreamed of going at had I been four or five under instead of four or five over. I was throwing caution to the wind, I suppose you would describe it by saying that Iwas throwing caution to the wind.
On the 15th, where I had taken an 8 yesterday, I definitely decided to go for the green today. I wanted to make a statement. I didn't want to be in debt to the hole if you see what I mean. The yardage was perfect this time - 250 yards. Time for my 5 wood. I hit a great shot and I actually thought it was going to go into the hole. It trickled over the back and I didn't get down in two. Sort of summed up my day. I felt as though every time I got a bit of momentum going I felt like I got a kick in the you know where.
If I look back on my three days I am really pleased with my driving. I have only missed a few fairways in 54 holes. I have been able to move the ball both ways in the air with my driver, right to left and left to right. And I have hit a lot of good iron shots. I have made some good putts this week but not as many as I would have liked and I haven't felt as comfortable as I would have liked with my putter. No sooner had I finished my third round than I went for putting practice with Nick Bradley my coach.
The crowd seemed frustrated for me today. I could hear them shouting "come on Justin, come on Justin" and I couldn't give them what they wanted, what I wanted. When I was walking onto the 14th green Matt Dawson led a cheering party shouting out "come on Jay Ro," which is what he calls me sometimes. I wanted to do something for him, for the other spectators, for myself. And in the end I wasn't really able to. Frustrating.
