A really disappointing week. That's how I sum up my Masters. I never seemed to be able to get any momentum going after the first round. At key points I didn't make an up and down or I would hit it on a par 5 in two and take three putts. I never seemed to be able to get any momentum going. There was that long run of holes without a birdie. I kept shooting myself in the foot and it became a long hard week. I lost patience a bit in the second round, specially after that 8. I found it hard to lift myself after that.
But I will take some positives away from Augusta with me. I drove the ball well and my golf swing is fine so that tells me that my game is in good shape. I know it might not seem it is after such a disappointing finish but it is. I am comfortable with my preparation for the event. Ideally I won't have two weeks off before the Masters next year. That is too long but it is the way the schedule worked this year. It won't work that way next year. I liked the idea of coming up here two weeks before the tournament to refresh my memory. That meant I didn't have to do too much on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Two things I have learned this week are, firstly, how important it is to stay patient and play this course one shot at a time. I know everyone says that but it hit home with me as I was walking up the 18th. I really, really realised just how true that is.
The second thing I have learned is that is probably a mistake to change my putter during the week. It was amazing how good the new one felt on the putting green and outside the competition but once I got onto the course it was different. I think I would have liked to have a dry run with it in another tournament.
So now we're off to Hilton Head. I've been there three or four times. It's a strategic course and it has small greens, which means you have to be very accurate. That should suit me. I am driving the ball well, as I said. A good thing about Hilton Head is that it has a holiday atmosphere about it. I will go down there with no expectations and enjoy myself.
Our house here in Augusta will break up tomorrow when we set off on the car journey down to Hilton Head. It's about a three-hour drive. My friends from North Hants will go back to England. Matt Dawson is playing golf before he flies back. They have been out partying when I've been working hard this week. Tonight I will get a chance to have a few beers and hang out with them. I'm looking forward to that.
