Here I am in San Diego and I am really happy with the way I am playing now. Ever since I arrived here on Sunday evening I have been trying to keep things turning over nicely, trying not to do too much, which is always the temptation at a major championship. I feel confident about my chances this week. The Memorial tournament was important for me. It enabled me to regain confidence and remind me that once I get back up on a leaderboard I do feel comfortable. That little taste I had of it at the Memorial should stand me in good stead here this week.
This course is going to demand pretty much everything. The fairways and the rough are kikuyu grass, which is very unusual in the US. Kikuyu grass grabs the clubhead a lot more than you think. It is a lot more like the grass I know in South Africa. It is a grass I have played well on before. The greens are poa annua. You accept you are going to miss a few putts this week and that they are going to be bouncy, especially in the afternoon.
The South Course here at Torrey Pines is certainly a spectacular looking golf course, very rugged. I know it is the longest course ever for a US Open but it doesn't feel like that to me. The wind seems to be heavy and the ball is affected slightly when it is into the wind. The fairways are relatively firm. I have played shorter courses that have seemed longer because the ball is plugging in the fairway.
Generally I like the week of the US Open. We always play great golf courses and I like that. I have always tended to play hard courses well. It is a loud boisterous week. The fans don't hold back over here. They are much less reserved. It is nice playing in front of that sort of crowd. It has been a good atmosphere out there so far this week. On practice days I try to enjoy the crowd as well. When you are playing the tournament you can't do that. They are out there to watch us play golf. I like signing autographs and interacting with the spectators.
On Monday night we went to a spectacular party. TaylorMade, one of my sponsors, rented a house for an awful lot of money. The house was said to be worth $17m. There were 850 people there. Lots of players and their clients and guests. There was a barbecue, lots of fast cars, a pool party. It was all pretty cool.
Now it's down to business.
