I'm shattered. We started at 1.36 and by the time we had finished and I had signed my card it was after 6.30. I decided not to practise, not to putt, because I'd had enough for one day. Today was brutal.
I am having some difficulty in understanding quite what went wrong. I hit the ball beautifully in my warm-up but I must admit I did putt poorly, even though I birdied my first hole. I had an absolute disaster on the greens. I took 34 putts, which is far too many. That's where my round got away from me and that's why I went round in 79. I found the greens very hard to read. I struggled as much on the greens today as I did at Wentworth. We were out in the afternoon and by then the greens were very bumpy. I made mistakes on holes and then twice - on the 16th and the 18th - I compounded those mistakes by three-putting as well, both times from inside 12 feet.
Yet I feel it was a day when I was not rewarded. I hit a number of very good shots but little went my way. For example on one hole my ball hit Ernie Els's on its second bounce otherwise it might have been a lot nearer the hole. On another hole my ball was plugged in a bunker.
I felt I drove the ball well. I hit seven of the 14 fairways so my average was 50%. And my distance was good. My average was 301 yards and I was up with Geoff [Ogilvy] and Ernie [Els] most of the time.
My target now is to make the cut. I have a lot of work to do. I am 126th at the moment, level with Paul Casey, Angel Cabrera and Colin Montgomerie among others, and I have to get back among the top 60 or those within ten strokes of the leader to be playing at the weekend. I shall set myself new goals for the second round. I have no chance of getting back to under par tomorrow but if I can get back from plus eight to plus four or plus five then that won't be too bad. And if I am around level par by Sunday then that won't be far away.
I am off at 8.06 in the second round. My routine changes when I am playing in the morning. I will be up at 6am, have breakfast and then do a good warm-up session with Kam, my masseur in the fitness trailer. Then instead of warming up for 1 1/2 hours as I did today, I will probably warm up for only a half hour and then do a half hour putting.
I will be better tomorrow. I have to be.
