After I had such a good run in the majors last year, it was really disappointing to miss the cut at Torrey Pines yesterday. I've done pretty well in the US Open before and was really looking forward to playing here because I was confident I would do well.
My second round of 72 was a huge improvement on the first day, when I came in with a 79. But on nine over par for my two rounds, I was dependent on the lead being no better than one under par. In that way, I would have been within ten shots of the leader and would have made the cut. Sadly, it was not to be.
In the end, I spent the afternoon monitoring the golf and flicking around on the TV between that and the Dog Whisperer. That's for my wife Kate's benefit, not mine.
I must say, it was disappointing how many shots I threw away. I hit 13 out of 14 fairways, which is the hard part done in many senses. I drove the ball long and straight and hit some nice iron shots, too, but I had an incredibly hard time on the greens. It shows, when you consider that my two birdies came from a two putt on the 18th and one I hit to about six inches on the 7th hole.
My bogeys came when I three-putted two of my holes and found my ball plugged in a bunker for the other. I didn't do a lot wrong, but I just couldn't put it together on the putting surface. I took 34 putts on the first day and 31 yesterday, which is too many.
My pace was good in the practice rounds, so I thought I had the greens worked out. You putt to quadrants in the green where you think the pins might be and it seemed to be working well. But I got off to such a poor start in the first round that my confidence went and I couldn't see the putts going in, even from a couple of feet.
I have to say, I think the greens were incredibly poor for a major championship, especially in the first round. With the conditions a bit more overcast yesterday, they probably didn't dry up as much in the afternoon, which made them slightly easier to putt on. But the putting was my undoing this week because if you get your tail up on the greens, your whole week changes.
I came into the event really confident. I've always prided myself on the way I play in the majors. I didn't miss a cut in any of the four last year and my worst finish was tied 12th. But it's hugely disappointing not to get to play over the weekend. This is one that fell by the wayside, so it's back to the drawing board on the putting.
I feel positive going into next week, but I'd have chosen to play well this week rather than next. I'm playing in the Travelers Championship in Connecticut, but will probably spend the weekend here, do a bit of practice and relax. It will be incredibly frustrating, though, watching the championship going on around me and not being a part of it.
I'll get through next week and then I'll turn my attention to Birkdale and the Open Championship. I'll be back home for the European Open in two weeks and will then take some time off before heading to Birkdale. Basically I've got five weeks in England which will be great. For me, this US Open is history now. I've got to put it behind me and get ready for the next big challenge.
