KJ Choi sank a 25-foot birdie putt on the18th to grab the overall lead from Greg Norman on the second day `at Royal Birkdale. The South Korean birdied the last five holes to fire a three-under par 67 with the two-time champion one shot further back.
Camilo Villegas of Colombia hit the best round of the tournament with a five-under 65 to sit on one over, while Padraig Harrington played the last four holes in four under par to bring himself right back into contention at two over with Graeme McDowell.
The defending champion was struggling at six over par after 11 holes but ended his round birdie, par, eagle, birdie.
The main threat may come from David Duval, the former world No 1, who after making a charge, finished two over.
Colin Montgomerie had to fight to make the cut, on eight over par after 14 holes. The Scot had a triple bogey at the fifth and a double bogey at the sixth.
