Blown away. That was the story of my day. I was blown away to an 82. All I can say is I tried my hardest all day. I gutted it out. I think I am one of the best grinders out there but it was hard today, wickedly hard.
I never want to play golf in those conditions again. I didn't feel it was golf. I can't remember playing conditions like that. Carnoustie in the Open in 1999 was really, really tough. Amateur golf you just have to suck it up and get down the fairways. There are no officials out there checking on balls moving on the greens. You have to deal with it. I had a lot of tough rounds as an amateur.
But today was one of those days that was hard, hard work. I just tried 100%. That is all I can give myself credit for. Apart from that I was rubbish.
It is a shame when it comes down to a day like today. You needa totally different type of skill to get round on a day like today. You need a survival instinct. You need luck. You need perseverance. You need to be holing out well. But I missed eight putts that would have been gimmes on Friday. Eight short putts missed means a long day.
I got here in plenty of time today. I learned the lesson from Friday. I had a nice little warm-up and I fet very good on the putting green. It is quite sheltered there. I had no inkling of what was to come. I felt ok after the first two holes but I started to unravel on the 5th where I snap-hooked a 3 wood into the trees and took a 5 on the 6th. After that just making pars was a real challenge.
In the Open ten years ago I shot a 66 on the Friday in rough conditions and that was two strokes better than anyone. That round is best forgotten. So is the Can't look back at it, can't compare it. It is like comparing apples and pears. That 66 might have been the luckiest round of golf I have ever played in my life.
I will come out tomorrow, regroup, try and shoot a decent score and salvage as many spots on the leaderboard as possible. It would be lovely to shoot in the sixties before the week is done. I feel that a score like that is out there for me. I want to get revenge on the 17th hole, too. I want to birdie that hole before the week is done.

Well, it was golf. That's the beauty of the game, battling nature...and yourself. Even for us hacks.
I loved the Nicklaus quote yesterday, need a reminder?

What a pathetic winge -- Golf is played outside with a stick and a ball, Justin, the weather is the same for eveyone in the field !
Michael, Surbiton,
One thing that bugs me a little bit is " didn't feel it was golf" comment, same as Pat Perez whining on Thursday. Its nice for a BIG fan of the game to see different set ups and conditions all year...if a 53yr old man can do it?? you should stop crying about it..
