Who came up with the Pink Panther nickname and when? Casey Wittenberg [a golfer on the men’s PGA tour] is a friend of mine. He always commented on my wearing pink, so one day he called me the Pink Panther, and it stuck
And why all the pink? I’ve always liked pink. It’s my favourite colour as it shows the true me. It is perceived to be a girly colour but also has a bold side to it, and I like that
Michelle Wie and Annika Sorenstam tried and failed in men’s tournaments. Do you have any interest in competing against the guys? I have no immediate plans or desire to play in a men’s event. Maybe at some point in the future, so I certainly don’t rule out something like this down the road
Who would you nominate in your dream fourball? Tiger Woods, Shaquille O’Neal and my dad! Can you imagine Shaq just “hurting” a golf ball?
Who is the most famous person you’ve met outside golf, whose company you have enjoyed? I’ve had the opportunity to meet a lot of neat people, but visiting the White House with the Solheim Cup team [twice] and meeting some of our country’s leaders [including President Bush] was pretty cool. I also met Justin Timberlake and he seemed like a nice guy
How do you see your life after golf? Had I not gone into professional golf, I would have done something with fashion. I love that whole area. When I retire from golf, I hope to stay involved and perhaps combine my love for fashion with it somehow. I can see myself doing some fashion designing down the road
Have you ever encountered any sexism in golf? Fortunately no. That wouldn’t sit too well with me
Do you think there is now too much emphasis on looks in the way the women’s game is marketed? I am a competitor first and foremost with winning paramount, but it is important to look nice, whether I’m in the final group of a major championship or going to the movies with friends. I do not think there is too much emphasis on it, but I do think it is important
What’s the best shot you’ve ever seen? Boy, it is hard to narrow it down to just one shot, but if I had to choose I would say Tiger Woods’s chip-in at the 16th hole on the last day of the 2005 Masters was simply unbelievable. Saying it was creative is a big understatement
What was your most painful defeat? I learned very early that golf is a sport where even great players lose more times than they win. The events where I feel I gave it away or I beat myself are especially disappointing. Perhaps painful is not the right word, but this year’s US Women’s Open was very disappointing, for the reason I just mentioned. I certainly learned a few things that hopefully I can apply in the future
What was the last film you saw? I saw Wedding Crashers last week and laughed through the whole movie. I love comedies
Tell us about your home in Isleworth, the estate on which Tiger Woods, Mark O’Meara and Shaquille O’Neal live I really like living there. I’m getting to know more of the other tour pros, although I’m the only female pro. Being able to pick up a few pointers from some of the guys is exciting and helpful. There are so many great players there that I think I get better just breathing the same air. A few months ago, I played in the Tavistock Cup [where the leading members of the Isleworth club play against professionals belonging to the nearby Lake Nona]. Guess who won?
What was the best advice you received as a young golfer? My dad is very competitive, to say the least, but he always stressed to me when I was growing up that golf is a game and therefore it should be fun. He ensured all my instructors over the years kept it fun for me. I’ve tried to do that ever since, and I’m still having fun Paula Creamer is an RBS ambassador
