Luke Donald has been ruled out of contention for the Ryder Cup and will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on his left wrist in New York yesterday.

The 30-year-old injured a tendon at the US Open at Torrey Pines, San Diego in June and tried to recover without surgery. “While there is never a good time for an injury, this was especially disappointing,” Donald said. “It forced me to miss the Open Championship and it comes in a Ryder Cup year.” The Englishman will begin strengthening exercises in six weeks and should be able to start chipping and putting after three months.

Donald won all three of his matches at the K Club in Kildare in 2006 when Europe secured a third successive victory over the United States. He is the world No22 but would have needed a wild card to play at Valhalla in Kentucky next month.
