Sam Torrance has expressed his concern that Nick Faldo is taking so much responsibility on himself for the Ryder Cup and called on the Europe captain to increase his support staff.
"I was a wee bit surprised that he has only gone with himself and Olly [Jose Maria Olazabal, the only named vice-captain]," Torrance, the 2002 Europe captain, said. "He wants to gain all the information himself about the players but he can't do that, he won't have the time.
"Take, for instance, sorting out the pairings for the afternoon on the Friday and Saturday. You have to get them in by 12.15pm, when two of the morning matches are still on the course. He doesn't have the time to watch all four matches and could make a decision to drop one pairing who he sees are two down with three to play, only for them to win the last three and he'll want them back in. If he hasn't been watching their game, then he won't know how well they are playing.
"It is very difficult to get it right. In 2002, I had four helpers [including Mark James and Ian Woosnam, the vice-captains], one following each match. I think Nick should pick a couple more assistants, just to get that information back to him. You need your friends there, people who you know and trust and who will give you an honest assessment."
Torrance suggested that Faldo should have appointed Colin Montgomerie as a vice-captain once he had decided not to give a wild card to the Scot. "If it was me, I'd have had Monty there as a vice-captain," he said. "It's irrelevant about their relationship, egos should get left at the door."
He added that making Montgomerie vice-captain would help to prepare the Scot for when he becomes Europe captain. "When I was vice-captain to Mark James in 1999 I learnt more that week than I did playing in eight Ryder Cups."
Speaking to promote the BMW Urban Golf Cup, Torrance added that he liked the look of Faldo's "well-rounded team" but would have picked Darren Clarke over Ian Poulter as a wild-card, adding that he was not impressed when Poulter chose not to play in last week's final qualifying event. "I thought it was an error not to play at Gleneagles," he said. "That would have got a yellow card from me if I was captain and could have counted against him. But I don't see a problem with anyone in our team. It's a very strong side."
