I think our victory over Steve Stricker and Ben Curtis in the afternoon fourballs rescued the situation we had got ourselves into in the morning foursomes. Ian and I were really disappointed we couldn't finish our morning game off against Stewart Cink and Chad Campbell. We led them by three holes after six and got them back from one up to all square with three holes remaining. In other words we had them by the short and curlies and let them slip. No doubt about it, it was very frustrating.
So this afternoon we had to dig deep. We only had a few minutes for lunch, not very long at all in which to turn it around. We tried to believe it was a new day and a new match and it was important for us to win that one. We said to ourselves at lunchtime "it's a beautiful day, a new day, come on, let's erase the memory of this morning and get stuck into this afternoon's match."
We got off to a great start by getting a couple of holes up early on. It's funny to say this perhaps but the experience of the morning match against Stewart and Chad helped us finish the game off in the afternoon. When we got past the turn we said to ourselves "come on. We know we can do it. Let's just put this match away."
I think the half point that Lee and Soren got at the end of the day is going to be the turning point for the week. We think we can win now. They had to put up with a lot today facing Boo Weekley and JB Holmes. Playing with those guys is like being in a freak show. Boo and JB appeal to a totally different audience. They area like cult figures almost. It is pretty awesome to see how the crowd react to them but it is completely different to play against them. They do create a completely different atmosphere around them. For Lee and Soren to halve that game was a huge result.
The Americans practised on the back nine twice, we practised on the front nine twice. Maybe that is why we dominated on the front nine and they dominated on the back nine. Interesting that. I think that as far as tomorrow is concerned that won't make any difference. We all know the golf course now.
The Europeans got off to a good start. There was a lot of blue on the leaderboard this morning early. Somebody said we led in six of the eight matches at one point or another. On one hand that is a little disappointing because we shouldavae finished better. But it also means that the European team is strong and when we figure out how to finish the games off that bodes really well.
