Billy Foster, who caddied for Darren Clarke at the 2006 Ryder Cup at the K Club, was pressed into service at the last minute at Valhalla yesterday. As one of two caddie masters with the Europe team - the other was Dave McNeilly, who normally works for Niclas Fasth - Foster was called upon to carry the bag of Soren Hansen.

Hansen's normal caddie, John Graham, had a recurrence of a lower-back injury and was barely able to walk, let alone carry clubs. As one of the most experienced caddies on the circuit, Foster will not have been fazed by what awaited him and would have been a steadying influence on Hansen in his match against J.B. Holmes, a local favourite.

Among one of the rumours doing the rounds yesterday was one of a repeat performance of what happened at Kiawah Island in 1999, when a number of players were woken by phone calls during the night. A European Tour spokesman dismissed the suggestions, however, saying that one player had been woken inadvertently, but that no others had been disturbed.
